Spiritual service and feeding the soul
The question we asked earlier this morning about service, we fell in depth. And you said the highest service is teaching Krishna consciousness. Which I would not dispute.
But in the West, I think our religions teach us that on an empty stomach it's very difficult. Well, you are not in an empty stomach. Do you think that Krishna consciousness calls us that you are an empty stomach? No.
We are... if you come to our love feast, you see that we are eating more than anyone else. I'm thinking about the poor. No, why do you think like that? We are not empty stomach. First of all, that is my answer.
We are not empty stomach. Yes. We are full, therefore you are full in everything. In stuff, in state, in satisfaction, in children, father, everything. Complete. Complete means everything complete.
Is it a higher level of service than feeding the hungry among the fellow man? We are not feeding the hungry people. We are feeding those who are not in Krishna consciousness. They may be hungry. It doesn't matter.
We don't discriminate. Whether he is rich or hungry, poor or rich. No. We invite everyone. Please take this Krishna consciousness prasāda. Be satisfied. That is our discrimination. The ordinary charitable man, he discriminates.
Oh, you are not poor, you are rich. Why shall I supply? But we don't make that discrimination. We know everyone is poor. Everyone is poor for spiritual want of spiritual consciousness. Therefore, we have no discrimination.
That this is poor, this is rich. Anyone who is not in Krishna consciousness, he is poor. He is a poor soul. So we are feeding them. By knowledge, by food, by everything. Best service. Actually, a man poor in knowledge is poor.
But is there a level of service at which I say this man is so hungry that he can't listen to me until I have fed him?
So I must first be... But let him come and take our prasāda without uh, any condition; everyone is welcome. Come on, take prasāda. There are many persons come, they simply take prasāda and go away.
They don't mind what you say. Don't display it. Because by taking prasāda he will become one day Krishna conscious. That opportunity we give everyone. Yeah.
Understanding maya and the form of God
Māyā means illusion. Illusion. Just like you are not this body. This is māyā. This body you have got, I have got, everyone. Temporary, say, for eighty years. After this body, in a lump, finished. For good, finished.
We'll never see this body again. That is māyā. Māyā means sometimes it comes just like a flash. It stays for a second or for a few minutes or few years. Again, finished. That is māyā. Māyā means which is not eternal.
That is māyā. Yeah, but you know everything is being manufactured by energy. That is a fact. So there is one energy which is māyā, means illusory energy.
And there is another energy which is eternal energy or spiritual energy. Māyā means flash-like, temporary. It's like shadow. If your hand is there, then shadow is there. If you remove your hand, there is no shadow.
The shadow is māyā and the hand is real. You want... Is the uh, form of Krishna on earth uh, similar to the spiritual form in the spiritual sky? Here he said, "sambhavāmy ātma-māyayā". He does not accept any material form.
He comes in his own original form. Ātmā-māyayā. Spiritual form. How is he visible then? But that is his mercy. He is not visible, but he is visible as it is; not that it is simply invisible, but it is visible.
That is also stated in the Bhagavad-gītā. Although Krishna was visible, but there were many men who could not understand, yoga-māyā-samāvṛtaḥ, being covered by this yoga-māyā.
But He is still visible, provided we have got the eyes to see Him. I fully realize, devotees see Krishna with something like blue, except spiritual.
Premāñjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena santaḥ sadaiva hṛdayeṣu vilokayanti yaṁ śyāmasundaram acintya-guṇa-svarūpaṁ govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi.
You have to anoint your eyes with love of God, then He will be visible. Not with these eyes. You have to create those eyes. Not create, but we have to reform.
The whole process of Krishna consciousness is renovating the spiritual activities of the senses. Just like cataract eyes, you cannot see. But you remove the cataract by some medical process, you see.
Similarly, there is material cataract. You have to remove that and you see God, face to face.
Meditation and the authority of scripture
I understand that you repeat this saying to put yourself in an increased rate of vibration to become more closely attuned to the spiritual. Yes.
I accept that, but my question is, once you reach this higher rate of vibration and are in tune, do you, or if you don't, why don't you allow for a period of meditation so that maybe you can receive? This is meditation.
That is meditation. That is meditation. Repeating the same sound, and hearing the same sound, I'm concentrating my manas. That is meditation.
If you're concentrating your mind, you're not allowing it to accept—you're concentrating. No, thing is that your question is meditation. This is meditation. As soon as I chant Krishna and I hear, this is meditation.
And this Krishna is not different from the Krishna person, because Krishna is absolute. Therefore, I am concentrating mind on the sound Krishna, means I am concentrating on Krishna, the Supreme.
And by concentrating mind on Krishna, I am become purified. So as you become purified, so you realize, realize you. This is the perfect meditation.
That is stated in the Bhagavad-gītā. yoginām api sarveṣāṁ mad-gatenāntar-ātmanā śraddhāvān bhajate yo māṁ sa me yuktatamo mataḥ. That is first-class yogī who is always seeing Me within himself.
This concentration, seeing Krishna, hearing Krishna, is the ear. Ear means mind. Mind is the center of all senses. Either you see or hear or touch, the center is the mind.
So therefore, by hearing, it is situated in the mind; that is meditation. And that he is accepted in the first class, who is simply meditating on Krishna. He is first class. All other yogīs are third class.
Krishna calls such yogīs first class. Yes. What basis do you have? But I'm speaking from the śāstra, we are realizing it. There is authority.
I'm not manufacturing, I am speaking quotation from the authority, just like a lawyer. He quotes from the law book, that's all. That is sufficient. That is happening every day. Yes. Uh yeah, we have a few things.
Um, the people without the word speech would act as if even believe me of come into it... Yeah.
Soul evolution and critiques of Darwinism
If you touch fire, you believe it or not, it will burn. If it is fire, fire will act. If you say, "I don't believe that it will burn," but when you actually touch it, you see that it will burn. Second question.
Is it possible to sanctify the material things in everyday life through the... Oh, yes. Yes. Just like, what is material life? Eating, sleeping, mating, and defending. This is material life.
Just like Arjuna fought, this is defending. But for his personal self, he denied, "Oh, I'm not going to fight with my kinsmen." But when he understood that Krishna wants, he dovetailed, it is sanctified.
He became a devotee by fight. So you dovetail your activities in Krishna, it is sanctified. You touch fire, it will become hot, warm. So you have to touch the fire.
You have to plug with the electricity and then everything will do. That is Krishna consciousness. We do everything with consciousness and we make your consciousness Krishna, then everything is simplified. Alright.
Did the human body evolve from lower species of life? Yeah. From the first that it started. Aquatics. Because the whole world was dissolved in water. So when it was water only, there were animals, living entities, aquatics.
Then the water dried up, land came up, then trees, plants. So this is the evolutionary process: from aquatics to trees, plants, then worms, reptiles, then birds, then beasts, then humans.
Um, I thought that there was always 8,400,000 species and that at that time it wasn't on the earth, it was on a different planet. Yeah. I'm speaking of this planet.
There are many planets which may not be dissolved in water. But living entities are always there. Either it is water and land or sky or anywhere, fire even. There are living entities. Even in fire.
Otherwise how living entities can be possible in the sun globe? There are. Yeah. If we accept this theory of Darwinism, then why are not apes now turning into men?
He said, if you accept the evolution, how come apes aren't turning into men? Instead, after death you become a man. Why say we accept the theory of Darwinism? No, not Darwinism.
Darwinism is... there is called organic matter. He has no... I mean, it's an idea of soul. He does not believe in soul. His theory is... it is a theory, it is not a fact, it is not a science.
His explanation is sometimes "perhaps it was like this, it was like this." Perhaps I didn't make my statement correct. No, our basic theory is that the soul is eternal. He's changing his dress. Now he's in monkey dress.
Next day he has human dress. That's all.
Human responsibility and spiritual practice
Are you saying then that man has from, say, more? No, not necessarily from many. But there is another process that the man comes from three animal life: from lion, from monkey, and from cow. According to the Vedic system.
So anyway, this is a change of dress. Either the man comes from cow or monkey or from lion, the change of dress. That is explained in Bhagavad-gītā.
Vāsāṃsi jīrṇāni... By nature's way, they're coming up to human life by the process of evolution, natural evolution. Now, when one gets this human form of life, he has got developed consciousness.
Now, if he misuses this developed consciousness just like the animals, then again he goes back to the animal.
And if he properly uses his consciousness for going up, then he can go to the other upper planetary system or he can go to God. That is his discretion. In the nature's way, one is promoted up to the human form of life.
Now he has got discretion. He has to make his choice whether he is going up or down. That is stated in Bhagavad-gītā: ūrdhvaṃ gacchanti sattva-sthā.
If you keep yourself in the modes of goodness, then you are promoted higher and higher.
Ūrdhvaṃ gacchanti sattva-sthā, madhye tiṣṭhanti rājasāḥ, and if you keep yourself simply on the modes of passion, then you keep yourself here; and jaghanya-guṇa-vṛtti-sthā adho gacchanti tāmasāḥ.
And if you have developed your abominable characteristics, less than animals, cats and dogs, then you go down. So it is your discretion where you want to go now. That is also stated in the Bhagavad-gītā.
If you want to promote yourself to the planetary system of demigods, you can go. If you want to remain here, you can remain here. If you want to go to the ghostly kingdom, you can go there.
But if you want, you can come to Me, Kingdom of God. That is your all discretion.
Our preaching is that why should you waste your time to go to the ghostly kingdom or to the demigod kingdom or this or that, where everywhere you go, the four principles of birth, death, old age and disease is there?
Please develop your Krishna consciousness, go back to Krishna and become happy for it. That's more scientific. If you don't like, that's your discretion. That is up to you. But our mission is to say the truth to everyone.
If you like, you take. This is the human service, this is the best service: to educate man to be in Krishna consciousness and end all problems of material existence. Simple method. Chant Hare.
There's no... it is not very hard. Simple chanting Hare Krishna. Anytime, if you like, no rules and regulations, simply try to follow these words: Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare. And see. Yes.
There is no loss, the gain is very great. We are not charging anything, that "give me $50 or $35". I give some secret, it is open. Why don't you try it? Yeah. I know all Krishna, Jesus and the world.
Now, what relation is Jesus to Krishna? Krishna... Jesus himself said that he is son of God. You should know it. Krishna said that? No, no, Jesus said himself that he is the son of God. Did he not? Krishna...
Jesus, Lord Jesus Christ says that he is Son of God. Yes. Don't you know this? Yes, he is. Then why do you ask? You should know it. No, but what I mean is, is Krishna also the same person? No, Krishna is the father.
Krishna says, "I am Supreme Lord." Sarva-yoniṣu kaunteya sambhavanti mūrtayaḥ yāḥ, tāsāṁ brahma mahad yonir ahaṁ bīja-pradaḥ pitā. He declares that "I am the father of all entities." So there is no, uh, quarrel.
Lord Jesus Christ said, "I am the Son of God," and He said, "I am the Father." So what is the discrepancy? Krishna is Father. Father. Yes. Oh, Krishna is Father. Oh, I didn't know. That was what I wanted to know.
Oh, fine, thank you. All right. Let us jump to it.
