Engaging in devotional service to Narayana
Na dātavyaḿ krīṇīto bhavyo 'sau, tan-mātra-sthitaye sādhu tan-niścayāt, iha sarva-svo 'pi nṛṇām.
Mahārāja concluded that instead of wasting time for so-called material happiness, sense gratification, please engage yourself in the service of Nārāyaṇa.
That conclusion he made, giving his very nice argument and reasoning, that a human being has nothing to do for senselessness. He has only to act in Krishna consciousness. There is no other engagement.
Any other engagement than Krishna consciousness is useless. It is said that viṣaya, and that is waste of time. This conclusion is made.
Now, such a big thing, Krishna consciousness, does it mean that one has to make a very big attempt for capturing the exalted platform? Prahlāda Mahārāja says, "No, no, no. Na hy acyutaṁ prīṇayato bahv-āyāso."
Sometimes people deter from accepting Krishna consciousness; they think that it is very difficult. Sense gratification is very easy, but Krishna consciousness, accepting, is actually difficult.
But the real fact is, it is more difficult to attain for sense gratification than Krishna consciousness. Krishna consciousness is very easy.
These people are sense-gratifying and trying to adjust these material inconveniences in so many ways, so many parties, so many political, social and educational programs.
But the reality is, in spite of so much endeavor, the result is nil.
And so far as Krishna consciousness is concerned, anyone, anywhere, any part of the world, simply he can chant Hare Krishna mantra and his life becomes successful. Mahārāja, my dear asura-ātmajāḥ. Ātmajāḥ means sons.
My dear sons of the asuras. He also admitted himself that "I am also a son of an asura." So it is not very difficult.
Finding the presence of Krishna everywhere
So develop your Krishna consciousness. And why? Because being the Supersoul, the all-pervading Supersoul, ātmā hi, not that Krishna or Nārāyaṇa is only for the Hindus or for the Indians or for the brāhmaṇas. No.
Sarva-bhūteṣu. Ātmā iti sarva-bhūteṣu. Sarva-bhūteṣu means all living entities. Even animals. Because He is Paramātmā of every living entity, so He is available for everyone.
This is not a conclusion that's meant for the Hindus or the Indians or the brāhmaṇas. No, sarvātma. Bahu-āyāsa-phala-prāptiḥ. So,
uh, Prahlāda Mahārāja is expecting that they might say that we are only, uh, five-year-old boys, still there, how it is possible to accept such a concept? So he is answering, "Don't think like that."
Prāptiḥ phala-prāptiḥ is easier because He is everywhere in everyone's heart. You haven't got to go outside to search out things; simply we have to accept the process and find within your heart, just near you, Kṛṣṇa.
If anyone chants Hare Kṛṣṇa without any offense, seriously, he very soon realizes that Kṛṣṇa is just on his tongue, is dancing. It is not the reason that we have to search because Kṛṣṇa is also long, long distance away.
We cannot approach even Kṛṣṇaloka by the aeroplane of mind and air. But still, Kṛṣṇa is available at your hands, within your heart. Ah, this is simply we have to, uh, uh, adopt this process, how to realize it.
Then it is not at all difficult. Parāvareṣu bhūteṣu brahmānta-sthāvarādiṣu, bhūteṣu vikāreṣu bhūteṣu ātmā. First is not only near at hand, but also parāvareṣu. For all, parāvareṣu. There are two creations.
One creation is spiritual and another creation is material. That is called parāvareṣu. Param is spiritual. Avaram means material. Bhūteṣu.
Bhūteṣu, there are five elements. Earth, water, yeah, fire, sky, everywhere, Kṛṣṇa, bhūteṣu, brahmānta-sthavareṣu, brahmānta, beginning from the ant, uh, up to Brahmā, uh, ant is the most insignificant creature, and Brahmā is most important, first created being everywhere, in every living entity, Kṛṣṇa is there.
Viśvāt-tathātmanā. Both the cases. Anything which is material everywhere. Aṇḍāntara-stha-paramāṇu-cayāntara-stham, He is not only within this universe, but He is within the atom.
Bhūteṣu, in the creation by introduction of these five elements, suppose here is a microphone, here is a creation of the children, energy of Kṛṣṇa. But this is Kṛṣṇa concept. Everywhere is Kṛṣṇa.
Or everything belongs to Kṛṣṇa. Take it otherwise. Anyway, therefore everything should be utilized for Kṛṣṇa. This is Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Nothing is without Kṛṣṇa.
This is the same thing, this is explained by Caitanya Mahāprabhu. While as you see Kṛṣṇa everywhere, sthāvara-jaṅgama dekhe nā dekhe tāra mūrti, sarvatra haya nija iṣṭa-deva-sphūrti.
The devotee, mahā-bhāgavata, he never sees anything. He sees only Kṛṣṇa, on average. He sees trees, uh, he sees uh animals and man going, moving, but he does not see them.
He sees, uh, "Here is a part and parcel of Kṛṣṇa moving in this way, staying in this way." This is Kṛṣṇa-bhāva. The time when you receive a friend known to you, you don't see his dress, you see your friend.
Similarly, uh, if you have developed love for Kṛṣṇa, then you see that, um, everywhere is Kṛṣṇa existing. Bhūteṣu, sthāvara-bhūteṣu ātmā-bhāvaḥ.
Ātmatva-sad-bhāva-saṁvittiḥ, siddhatva-iti, siddhatvam upapādayati parāvareṣu, iti brahmānta- viṣama-rādi-saṁjñeṣu bhūteṣu, bhūteṣu iti. Bhūteṣu means as a, uh, uh, as bhūteṣu, bhūti, um, normal matter.
Uh, both in living entities as well as uh material elements or entities, everywhere is Kṛṣṇa. Agni-viṣu ghaṭādiṣu, agni-viṣu just like these ghaṭas. This ghaṭas has no light.
But when it is used for chanting Krishna's name, there is... This is Krishna, we say, this is Krishna consciousness.
Developing the vision of a devotee
Anything used for Krishna consciousness, anything used for Krishna's service, it is not different from Krishna.
That is uh advice here: phalātmā, hi mahā-bhāva guṇeṣu guṇa-sammataḥ, guṇa-bhittiḥ, ekaiva parodhyātmā bhagavān sadā-bhāvaḥ. Guṇeṣu means all the things that is manufactured. We have got so many things.
They are called guṇas. Guṇa-bhittiḥ. Everywhere is Krishna. Everywhere is Krishna.
Yathā tarau draṣṭari viśva-bhakti-bhogyādi-buddhyā māyeti yaḥ pratyag-ātmā draṣṭā-bhuk puruṣo 'nabhaktyā nirdiśyate 'sau hi vihāya sad-rūpiṇā sa bhagavatyā nirdiśya māyeti viti utara na anyathā.
Vastutaḥ, anirdiśyo 'pi, san, dharma, anirdiśyo 'pi, uru-nirdiśya, san, vikalpita, yāti īśaḥ. The flat, the challenge: where is God? Challenge form is "God is glass." But a devotee is seeing all as God, nothing except God.
That is the difference between atheists and devotees. Why?
Why the devotees... All as... «premāñjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena santaḥ sadaiva hṛdayeṣu vilokayanti yam śyāmasundaram acintya-guṇa-svarūpaṁ govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi».
This seeing power of Krishna in everything will be possible when the devotee's eye is anointed with the ointment of premā. Premāñjana-cchurita-añjana... what is English of añjana? So
the salve of love, when it is painted or it is smeared on your eyeballs, then you can see Krishna everywhere. But in order to see God, in order to see Krishna, we have to practice daily by this bhakti-yoga.
Ādau śraddhā tataḥ premā. We have to invoke premā. Premā is there within you. «nitya-siddha kṛṣṇa-bhakti sādhya kabhu naya». It is as you are truth, as soul, param padam. Similarly, your love for Krishna is also a fact.
It is not that artificially you're being taught to love Krishna. Simply it has to be aroused. Śravaṇādi-śuddha-citte karaye udaya. Not that artificially, uh, you have been taught to love Krishna.
Nothing artificial comes there. There is not so. So in order to invoke that love, upadeśa, there is a process. This is the process. This is the process.
Following authority and the sadhu path
As described in the śāstras: sādhu, śāstra... We are to make progress with reference to the śāstras, to the saintly persons, sādhus, and your direct spiritual master. Sādhu-śāstra-guru-vākya, citte kariyā aikya.
Ādau śraddhā tataḥ sādhu-saṅgaḥ. Uh, sādhu-saṅga. Sādhu-saṅga. If anyone has got śraddhā, if he is for realizing Krishna, then he must associate with sādhus.
Our society means it is a society of the sādhus, Krishna conscious. One must be a sādhu. Then your society's name is Vaiṣṇava. And what is the symptoms of a sādhu? Sādhu means titikṣavaḥ kāruṇikāḥ... titikṣavaḥ, tolerance.
If there is any inconvenience in this society, don't be disturbed. Tolerate. That is the first policy you must have. Don't say, "No, it is not suitable for me, I am going out." No, no, no. Tolerate.
If you cannot, uh, cope with your friends and Godbrothers, tolerance, uh, try to, uh, pacify.
Uh, Maharaj used to... whenever there are big assemblies, there will be difference of opinion, difference of judgment, even fighting, very many. But Bhaktisiddhānta...
One of our Godbrothers was a big thief, stealing money of the society. I don't wish to disclose it now. We had a complaint to my Guru Mahārāja that this man is taking all money for it.
So he replied, "So why you are complaining? Why you are not sympathetic with your Godbrother? He's so much attached to money. Can you not tell him to be attached to Krishna? Why you are complaining?" He is like...
He knew that this is not... still he is taking money. And there are complaints. But he is to display... So, titikṣavaḥ. Titikṣavaḥ. Sādhu, sādhu means very tolerant.
Titikṣavaḥ kāruṇikāḥ suhṛdaḥ sarva-dehinām, ajāta-śatravaḥ śāntāḥ. The first qualification of sādhu is tolerant, humbler than the grass and tolerant than the trees. It is kṣamā.
One side tolerant, another side very compassionate. These non-Krishna consciousness people, they are suffering. Without Krishna consciousness, they are suffering.
Let us do some charity so that they may come to Krishna consciousness and be happy. This is kāruṇika. Titikṣavaḥ kāruṇikāḥ. Suhṛdaḥ sarva-dehinām. Then preaching should be done only in India? No. Sarva-dehinām.
All over the world. Dehī. There are not only entities within India or within Hindus. Sarva-dehinām, sarva-bhūtānām. All living entities, they should be compassion. How they are suffering for want of Krishna consciousness.
Let them taste this Krishna consciousness. These are the sādhu's business. Titikṣavaḥ kāruṇikāḥ. And if you do that, ajāta-śatravaḥ, nobody will be an enemy. Depend on this principle, Krishna. Enemy there will be.
But you don't care for those enemies. He remains friendly with Krishna by preaching His glories. Kṛṣṇenaiva sādhu-bhūṣaṇāḥ. Sādhavaḥ sādhu-bhūṣaṇāḥ. They are, they are sādhus because they have got all these sādhu characters.
But sādhu-saṅga, people should be given sādhus to associate with, sādhu.
Progressing through stages of spiritual taste
Then bhajana-kriyā. As soon as one comes in contact with a sādhu, he will be willing to accept the process of devotional service. Initiation, he will agree to be initiated.
Well, and as soon as he is initiated and follows the regulatory principles, then anartha-nivṛtti, all nonsense habits will disappear. All nonsense, automatically.
If there is bhajana-kriyā, actually, then there automatically there is disappearance of anarthas. Anyone who is actually undergoing bhajana-kriyā, you cannot see him smoking and drinking tea. It is impossible.
Therefore, these so-called sādhus and so-called bhaktas and so-called... So you must know there is no bhajana-kriyā.
Bhajana-kriyā means all these nonsense habits must disappear. Bhajana, and without disappearance of the nonsense habits, what is bhajana-kriyā? Anartha-nivṛtti is when this disappearance of unwanted...
Uh, uh, just like our students, they never think of going to the cinema. They are also young men. Because they have no taste for it anymore. Every young man, you see, they're standing in line for hours together for tickets.
But Krishna consciousness is so nice that even when one is very young, even when one has got all the inclination, he has no more taste. Paraṁ dṛṣṭvā nivartate. Because he has got better taste. He doesn't like this.
Anartha-nivṛtti. Tato niṣṭhā. When anartha-nivṛtti is finished, then he is niṣṭhita. It is niṣṭhita, yes. Niṣṭhā. Then prīti, love, prakāśa, attachment, without praśna, just like gopīs.
Of course, gopīs' position is very, very high. But some of the attachment, āśakti. Krishna is going to Mathurā. They are telling him, «Aśāpāśaiḥ śatair baddhāḥ», they pray, these are the signs of prayer.
As soon as you reach the platform of prayer, then you see Krishna, Nothing was hitting. This is perfect. It finds everywhere. That is perfect. Thank you. Anywhere sit down.
If you cannot go outside, sit down, chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, and you'll develop this as perception and state. What is the beginning? And what sense gratification, oh, how much that's struggling.
But sense gratification is an individual. Kṛṣṇa consciousness is not at all easy. Is that all right? The other time? Yes. Yeah. It is not at all... beautiful. Easiest. But the rascal will not accept the easiest for this.
They try to be happy by sense, that is māyā.
Overcoming material attachment and disturbances
He has been made a servant of māyā, working day and night very hard for sense gratification. And they reply, "Oh, if everyone becomes Kṛṣṇa conscious, who will work like me, like an ass?" That is the argument.
Where the asses will go? Why are you keeping the ass? Why not make a man? That program is not. We can even ask. Sa vai go-kharaḥ. What did it say? Bhanu. We have the trees in your country. Yeah. We are intelligent. Be prepared.
How many times are you thinking for the dry method or uh, drug? And set to... Yes, material is that slight, uh, we are feeling little cold, cover it. That's a mātrā-sparśāḥ.
Because it is cold, that does not mean we shall stop our Kṛṣṇa consciousness business. That is God. Power is. If there is crying, crying for a little bit like a dwelling of this pathway.
If we bring His coming by force, Allah is letting we for two minutes' business. And we cannot stop ourselves, ourselves. Yes, sir. I may be called for, uh, answering nature's call. I go, all right, finish it. Like that.
For that reason, one cannot stop Krishna concept. That is not. Samatitiksasva. Krishna's advice is: although saha it, it is painful. All right. Sahah. That does not mean that is māyā. It is āgamāpāyino 'nityās.
It comes and goes with temporary disturbing elements. All are decided to. So many things come and go. So he takes it like that. We have any questions? I like...
