Recitation of prayers and scripture

Bhagavate vasudevaya. Oh Ohna Bhagavat. Ohna Bhagavat, Narayanamaskritya, naramchaiva narotamchaiva, devim saraswati, devi saraswatiasam, tatojayamodi I'm very happy to see all of you today I will

try to say a few words about our philosophy of Krishna consciousness, and I will read the fortieth verse of the third chapter of Bhagavad-gītā, as it is, which is dealing with a very important problem in our life.

Hindriani Manobirani Hindriani Manobudirani Asyadishanamuchyate, asyadishanamuchate, asyadishanamuchate, asyadishanamu Eta irvi mohayate, Dyanam vritya dehinam, dnamavrityadehinam, dyanam Indriani Budir,

knowledge avritya covering Dehinam of the Embodied Soul. Translation and purport by His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda, Śrīla Prabhupādā kī jaya.

The senses, the mind and the intelligence are the sitting places of this last. Through them, lust covers the real knowledge of the living entity and bewilders him.

The enemy has captured different strategic positions in the body of the conditioned soul, and therefore, Lord Krishna is giving hints of those places so that one who wants to conquer the enemy may know where he can be found.

Mind is the center of all the activities of the senses, and thus, when we hear about the sense objects, the mind generally becomes a reservoir of all ideas of the sense gratification. And as a result, the mind and the senses become the repositories of lust.

Next, the intelligence department becomes the capital of such lustful propensities. Intelligence is the immediate next-door neighbor of the spirit soul.

Lusty intelligence influenced the spirit soul to acquire the false ego and identify itself with matter and us with the mind and senses. The spirit soul becomes addicted to enjoying the material senses and mistakes this as true happiness.

This false identification of the spirit soul is very nicely explained in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.

A human being who identifies this body made of three elements with His self, who considers the byproducts of the body to be His kinsmen, who considers the land of birth worshipable, and who goes to the place of pilgrimage simply to take bath rather than to meet men of transcendental knowledge there is to be considered like an ass or cow.

Indriani Manobudhir, Asyadishana Muchyatearvi Mahayatesha, Jana Mavritya Dehinam, the senses, the mind and the intelligence are the sitting places of this last. Through them, last covers the real knowledge of the living entity and bewilders him.

Analysis of force driving improper actions

prabhu nityānanda śrī-advaita gādādhara śrīvāsādi-gaura-bhakta- vṛnda hare kṛṣṇa hare kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa hare hare hare rāma hare rāma rāma rāma hare hare ājanulambita- bhujaḥ kanakāvadātaḥ saṅkīrtanaika-pitarau kamalāyatākṣaḥ viśvambaro dvija-varu- yuga-dharma-pāla vande jagat-priyakarau karuṇāvatārau

The end of this third chapter of Bhagavad-gītā. Krishna is answering one question which is asked by Arjuna.

And the question is very important for every one of us because every one of us can basically repeat the same question.

Arjuna is asking, what is this force which is forcing me to act improperly even though I know that it's improper? But still I cannot do anything because some force is pushing me. Something inside me is not giving me the freedom to act as I understand would be right.

We all have been there.

We all have been in situations when we know exactly perfectly well how we should act, and at the same time, we either don't have strengths to do it, uh or uh we don't we don't even think about it most of the time, we just act improperly.

So Krishna, he gives a wonderful, beautiful analysis of this problem.

And he says, kāma eṣa krodha eṣa rajo-guṇa-samudbhavaḥ, this is lust, this is the desire, which is born out of mode of passion due to the association with these modes of material nature. And here, in this particular verse, he says that because of this lust, which is basically all pervading, which is pervading the body, the mind and the intelligence and the senses of the spirit-soul, the real knowledge is being covered.

The knowledge which we have is a theoretical knowledge, it's not the real knowledge. And there is a very grave and great difference between the theoretical knowledge and

real knowledge, because real knowledge is a part of our soul, the part of our being, and when we have this knowledge, we will act on the basis of this knowledge.

But when the knowledge is just purely theoretical, mental knowledge, we will not be able to act on the basis of this knowledge. So, this problem of covering of the knowledge is very important.

And basically, what Krishna says that unless and until you have even a trace of identification with this material body, you will not be able to have a completely clear knowledge and therefore you

will uh you're doomed to commit some mistakes.

Material body as source of lust

One way or another, in one situation or another. Now sometimes people are a little naive about this. They think that oh yeah yeah yeah after chanting a few weeks I will be completely free from lust. Hare Krishna.

Good luck. We tried it. It doesn't really work hundred percent because of the simple reason we have the body.

Śrīla Prabhupāda once said that unless one has this material mind and material body, lust will be there because the material mind and material body is nothing else but the big repository of lust.

It's a big bag of lust, big bag of desire. Once a brahmacārī came to Śrīla Prabhupāda and said to Śrīla Prabhupāda very proudly, I'm totally free from lust. Prabhupada said, maybe you should approach a doctor.

There must be something wrong with you. So but at the same time, uh Śrīla Prabhupāda he points out on uh uh in the purport that we have to really know how where the lust is there, because the lust is enemy of the soul.

The lust is the main enemy of the soul. And we have somehow or other to conquer this enemy, to be victorious in this battle. We are in a battle.

This battle in Kurukṣetra is a battle which took place five thousand years back. But actually, we're all in this battle. And Krishna is trying to guide us in this battle.

But Krishna also says, you fight, I'm not going to fight this battle.

You have to fight. I will give you the necessary knowledge. I will explain to you what you have to know to be victorious in this battle. But fight you have to do.

And therefore, Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that it's extremely important for us to understand where our enemy is being hidden.

Because if we fight and the enemy is somewhere, you know, and we don't even know where the enemy is. And usually we don't know.

Usually the problem in our material life is that we think that the enemy is he or she or them or this country or this nation or this or that but the enemy is inside us

and we have to be extremely clear about it to be able to conquer this enemy.

And Śrīla Prabhupāda, I mean, very beautifully explains how this enemy takes over ultimately our knowledge. How the enemy is totally covering the knowledge. He says everything starts from hearing.

He gives a very beautiful description of how this last is becoming victorious over their soul. The soul has the purpose to be free, to love God, to serve God, to be completely happy in the spiritual world.

But we know that in this battle for this ultimate freedom, the soul is being conquered again and again and again, and remaining the slave of this material world, remaining the slave of material senses and lust.

Influence of hearing on material desires

And Śrīla Prabhupāda explains how it starts. He says it starts from hearing. Everything in this world starts from hearing. The spiritual life starts from hearing. Material life is also starts from hearing.

Hearing is the basic element and the basic practice. If we want to remain in the material world, we have to hear about the beauties and pleasures of the material world.

You go to Thailand and there will be nice Thai girls who will do nice Thai massage to you. This is the perfection of life. You know. Thai lot. Very nice. Very nice.

We will remain here in this material world to enjoy Thai massage. This is very nice. You know, so many advertisements are there. And the original advertisements is there in the Vedas. What is Veda? Veda is just advertisement.

Remain in this material world. Very nice. Very nice. Do this sacrifice and you will become so rich, it's unbelievable. Worship this planet, this nice Jupiter planet.

If you worship this nice Jupiter planet, there’s not much you have to do, just chant this special mantra of Jupiter and you will become so happy in this world. No problem. Vedas are filled with this stuff.

It's the advertisement. Krishna himself says this is this just the flowery language of the Vedas. And he says, this is you have to rise above this. Because what happens when you hear all these beautiful things,

this is good, this is bad. Do something and you will get good. Do something else and you will conquer over bad things. You will get rid of bad things and you will remain happy.

You know what happens with this, our senses become very strong and they get the new hope from the mind. Everything starts from the mind, the mind gets these ideas, very beautiful ideas which are floating around.

This whole world is just, you know, it’s a nice nice space where all these ideas of happiness in this material world is floating. You know, it's so nice.

And nowadays, you know, you not only have the ideas, you know, Vedas are very primitive in one sense. They only promise some things. Nowadays you don’t get the promise. You get the very nice picture of how nice it is here.

With the nice music. You know, wow, wow. You know, there are violins playing and there is nice music and there is sun and and you know the reality which you get from all these movies. It's so attractive.

It's much more attractive than this reality, you know. You look at this. The colors are not the same, you know. All these images which are there, they’re so attractive.

And now you have 3D reality, you know, 3D virtual reality. You can be right there. Very soon there will be cinemas where you will have the special aromas coming, you know.

Not only you hear, not only you see, you have aromas, and very soon they will push something into your tongue and you will get the full experience.

Pollution of intelligence by material lust

So uh and now then what happened next? What happened next? Next happened very tragic thing. The main thing happened next because the main problem when the lust gets into the intelligence.

You know, you can recognize when the lust is there in the senses? It's quite clear and quite gross. You can recognize, and you can even feel that something is wrong with it.

You can recognize when these lusty desires are taking over your mind. Sometimes we see it, sometimes we try to control it, it may even work. But ultimately, it's not a permanent solution because of

the reason which Śrīla Prabhupāda points out in this purport. Because he says that the lust gets into a very subtle form into our intelligence, into buddhi. Indriyāṇi mano buddhir asyādhiṣṭhānam ucyate. Adhiṣṭhāna means the sitting places or the places where somebody is hiding.

So Śrīla Prabhupāda says that the main problem comes when buddhi or intelligence becomes infected with the lust, and this buddhi or intelligence infected by the lust, by the lusty desire to enjoy completely identifies the soul with the matter. Please listen very carefully.

If I was Sacinandana Swami, I would say, my dear devotees, my dear devotees, please listen very carefully. I can never say this with the same feelings as he says, but

I sometimes I imitate him. So, my dear devotees, please listen very carefully because this is the root cause of all our problems.

And the root cause of all our problems is that through the mind and the senses the intelligence becomes infected, invested with the lust, and because it's just next door neighbor to the soul, it's so close to the soul, it's practically indistinguishable from the soul, very subtle in the beginning, but very gross at the end process takes place when the soul identifies itself with the body.

This is how the knot of identification, which we call false ego, is being formed. And the essence, the root of this knot, which is very hard to untie. And every one of us knows this.

We have been trying to untie this knot for a long time. I've been trying to do it for 30 plus years. You know, it doesn't work that well. Doesn't work as good as you wish it works because it's a very tight knot.

You know you're trying by different means by this yoga or this meditation on this process or that process this transcendental knowledge on that transcendental knowledge, and still you find yourself identifying with the body.

Because the subtle problem is this hope which is planted into the intelligence. Hope of enjoying in this world. And this hope or expectation that we will enjoy, we will enjoy, we will make it. Everyone else failed.

And there's nothing surprising about it. Everyone is a failure, you know, it's everyone is unfortunate. But there is one fortunate person. It happened to be me. I will make it. You know there are exceptions, right?

I will be this first exception. Everyone thinks like this. Everyone thinks I mean we're all very special, right? We're all very very special. And we all meant to enjoy here. This is intelligence.

The intelligence tells us no problem, don't hear this Hare Kṛṣṇa. Hare Kṛṣṇa are, you know, they're frustrated people. What can you do? You know, they just they just, you know, they're just failures. They live in the temples and they're just failures.

You will make it. So this is but to make it in this material world you have to identify with the body and how it works and uh here it goes.

But uh there is a solution to this problem, but first I still uh wanted to describe a little more the problem which is there. The solution is given by Prabhupāda at the end of the purport in a very beautiful way.

Actually, this is the explanation of the verse which Prabhupāda quotes is the main reason why I want to explain what I want to explain.

But before I go to the solution, which is a very beautiful solution and not so, I mean, how shall I say, not so obvious solution. You know, if we just superficially read this purport or even this verse at the end, you will not be able to understand what is the solution which is there in this verse.

We will come to this a little later. But first, we really have to understand the problem of this covered knowledge. As Krishna says here to Arjuna that because of this, this jñānam āvṛtya dehinām.

The soul identified with the body gets its knowledge covered, and basically what it means, it means that we don't know who we are. Because this knowledge, this clear knowledge, what is knowledge?

Knowledge is consciousness. And consciousness is soul. Consciousness is coming from the soul, but we don't know that we're soul. Theoretically, we may have this knowledge, but it's only theoretical.

This knowledge only goes as far as somebody pinches you, then you immediately forget that you're spirit soul. You know, nobody can pinch spirit soul, right? It's so small, it's very difficult to pinch it.

But you know somebody pinches your ego, either in a gross way or in a subtle way, you know, immediately you immediately forget that you're spirit soul. Spirit soul never does what we do on a daily basis.

And uh this is the problem. Jñānam āvṛtya dehīnam. The uh the dehīnam, the spirit soul which identify with the body, doesn't act as the spirit soul, perpetuating our problems.

And because of this, we are totally, completely unhappy. And what I want to say, and this is also a very important thing which I wanted to bring to you today.

That ultimately because of this intelligence polluted by this hope or idea that I will enjoy in this material world, we bring about unhappiness to others as well.

And we get entangled into this very complicated meshes of karma, hoping to have the happiness

Effect of selfish expectations on relationships

and knowing perfectly well where the happiness lies, the spirit soul knows very well that the happiness, at least when we have bright moments, we know that the happiness lies in relationship. Right?

We are looking for relationship. Young girl and young boy looking for relationship with each other, two friends, you know, or mother and the child looking for a nice relationship. Right? It's happiness, right?

It brings happiness. It definitely brings happiness.

But at the same time, we also know the problem that even though relationship is the source, greatest source of enjoyment and happiness, the same very same relationship is also the greatest source of what? Suffering and pain and agony and stress and distress and whatnot. You know, we all know it perfectly well. So what I want to explain now, please, my dear devotees, listen very carefully.

What I want to explain now, this is how the lusty intelligence spoils our relationship and ultimately the happiness in this world. Even in this world, we can be totally happy if we know where our enemy is.

Again, Prabhupāda says this is the enemy. We have to know where the enemy is. To fight with this enemy. So we know that the happiness lies in relationship,

but the happiness, the relationship only brings happiness when the relationship is on real love, when the relationship are spiritual, when they are based on real love.

And real love is totally, completely opposite to 180%, 180 degrees opposite to lust.

So when we love, and when we and we all have this relationship, when we love, we love, it means we give. We enter into the relationship and we feel so much happiness. Why?

Because in the beginning of our relationship, because of this experience, that somebody is so beautiful, or somebody is so magnanimous, or somebody is so knowledgeable, or somebody is so renounced, you know, we see this beauty, this reflection of original beauty of Lord Krishna, all attractive. We want to serve this person.

We want to give something, we want to give some present.

And somebody takes our present and he becomes so happy and he smiles and we are so happy he smiles a little child is being born to a mother and mother looks at this child and she just says this is Krishna.

Yes, yeah, this is Krishna, right? He's so innocent.

This original innocence of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is being reflected on this little child, and the child says, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm Krishna, yes, yes, yes.

So and when we have this total complete purity in our relationship, when we don't expect anything from the other person when we just want to serve.

And we want originally to serve God because you know whenever we get attracted to anyone, it's reflection of God. And this experience of pure love is also experience of spiritual emotions.

You know, in the beginning, when we only want to serve and we don't have so much expectations that this person will bring me happiness, then everything is nice.

We get this overwhelming nice experience, I'm so happy, I'm serving, you know, yeah, this is nice, this is what I want. But the problem is that our intelligence is polluted with lust. And because the intelligence is polluted with lust, the intelligence on a very subtle level expects something.

What will I get from this? You're already getting so much. But the intelligence says, no, no, this is not enough. I need to get something more. He or she or it or whoever has to make me happy.

He or she has to act the way I want to act. What happens because of this lusty intelligence? And this again, lusty intelligence is the problem. Lusty mind is a problem, but not such a big problem.

Because lust you can recognize there easily. Lusty senses is a big problem, but again, it's a gross problem. The subtle problem is lusty intelligence.

Lusty intelligence means you expect somebody in the relationship from somebody else and your love is being polluted by some business expectations. Everyone knows that there is no happiness in business, right?

But everyone is trying to do business by entering into some relationship. What will he or she ultimately give to me? And what happens in the beginning, this expectation is very small. It's like a seed.

And because it's so small, it's practically invisible. It's just a little, little, little seed of expectations. It's not so much.

It's more in the beginning that we just want to serve this other person and he's so nice and she's so nice and I want to do something for him and I want to do something for her. And we don't see this seed of lust in the other person.

But when we become close, then the fun starts. When we become close, this lust becomes more persistent. And the lust says, you know, why, why is she behaving in such a way?

You know, you know, she's not supposed to behave in such a way. She's supposed to behave in such a way to make me happy, but she behaves in a strange way. This is something something is wrong. Something is wrong.

First of all, she's not supposed to behave in such a way to make you happy. She's a free soul.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Sorry, sorry, sorry. You know, this is. There is this famous book, Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.

The great, great guru of relationships, Stephen Covey, he explains how the relationship breaks also. He says he lists I think 10 reasons uh why uh the relationship breaks.

And one of the reasons very important, which he points out, is that unclear expectation. Somebody comes and his advice, very American advice, please don't listen to this advice.

I mean it's a good advice on a certain level, but if you want something higher, don't listen to this advice. His advice is that clear up your expectations.

Just come to a girl and say, you know, come to her and very honestly in the very beginning say to her: you know what?

I expect you to work for me 24 hours a day, to wash my clothes, to cook for me, and also to go to work and you know to earn money and you know and give me pleasure at night.

You know, please tell her honestly and then your relationship will be very nice. Forget it. Your relationship will break in this moment. Because she's not looking for this.

She is looking for love and you're looking for love. She is looking for happiness and you're looking for happiness.

The problem is that because of this polluted intelligence, you don't understand that the happiness lies when you do something without any expectations.

But as soon as the expectation comes, it means lust comes, it means business enters into your relationship.

And when we become close, these expectations start growing. This little seed of lust, little seed of expectations starts growing and growing and growing in the heart.

And at one point, the other person sees this, you know, this strange weed in the heart. He saw that initially he thought this is a nice flower of love, is flourishing in the heart. And so fragrant.

And then he says there is some strange smell is coming out of there. With some thorns there, and there's some strange ugly creeper is there. And he says, Ah, you are selfish person.

You know, in every relationship there is one turning point. And it's even, unfortunately, it's even true in the relationship between mother and little child.

In the beginning, and all relationship in the beginning are very nice and cozy and so peachy and rosy and phew. You know, because you don't expect anything. Little child, you know what can you expect from little child?

From little child you can only expect troubles. You know, he will just cry in a very strange moments of night when you want to sleep.

But because you don't expect, or rather, you expect that he will do this, you know, and you're happy when he smiles. It's okay, it's no problem. But little seed is there. And the child grows. And the seed is also growing.

And at one point, when the child starts behaving in a way you don't like him to behave, you you will say to him everything you think about it.

You will say to this child, you are selfish beast. I have been serving you so selflessly for so many years without expecting anything, and now you're behaving in such a way.

This is the turning point. In every relationship.

Either it is a relationship between woman and man, or it's a relationship between mother and a child, or father and a child, a relationship, whatever relationship you take, there is a turning point where the expectation of selfishness in other person becomes visible to you and you point out to this uh to the other person, here you are, this is your selfish nature.

I'm sure. I still remember when my mother told me you are very selfish. Oh my goodness, it hurts. It really hurts. And when you hear this, what you say? Your ego reacts, right? I'm not selfish, you are selfish.

This is your problem, and you know all the problems which you have been noticing in this particular person, but not saying anything because you know if everything is so nice, you don't have to say.

At this moment, because your ego is hurt, you start blurting out. Yes, yes, yes, yes. You have this weakness and this weakness and this weakness. Who you think you are to point out my selfishness? So this is now it starts.

Now everything becomes normal. Welcome to the material world. So the vicious circle of breaking relationships starts. You know, the expectations are already big, the ego is already hurt.

And you start this nice, nice, nice, nice thing, you know, you fight with each other, you know, ah ja. And the bitterness accumulates and ultimately the break takes place. No relationship. No relationship. Why?

And no happiness. Why? Because of this enemy. That's why Krishna explains this to us. He says that this is the enemy of spirit soul. Your knowledge is being covered by this enemy.

You don't understand that your spirit soul, you don't understand the nature of the spirit soul, because you don't understand the nature of the spirit soul, you don't behave as a spirit soul.

As a spirit soul, you're not expecting anything. Spirit soul actually is happy. Spirit soul, the only nature of the spirit soul is to serve, to give. Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī explains this. Dadati prati grichnati.

Gukhyamakyati prichhati. What is the very first sign of love, dadati? You just want to give. And you accept. But you first give. It's not that you first accept and then give.

You know, when you're driven by lust, you also give, right? But you calculate. I gave this much, and you write down, I gave this much. What will I get in return? You know.

And fie on you if the return will be less than what you gave. You know. But this is against the nature of the spirit-soul.

But because our knowledge is covered, because we identify with the body. And the mechanism of identifying with the body is explained here very nicely. Prabhupada so nicely explains this.

Because by identifying with the body, and the body always needs something. Body is always trying to consume something. Body is.

you know, whatever body gives is something obnoxious, you know. We don't have to explain what comes out of the body. Something nice comes in and something really disgusting comes out. This is the nature of the body.

But this is not the nature of the soul. The body gets and gives something obnoxious. You know, but the soul emanates love. The soul emanates knowledge. The soul is only giving. Nature of the soul is to give.

But because the knowledge is covered, jñānāvṛtyā dehinām, as Krishna says here in this verse, because this knowledge is covered.

We don't know, you know, we don't know who we really are, and because we don't know who we really are, we behave as the body, and because we behave as the body, we get sufferings. We break relationship.

You know this uh unfortunately it's a stark reality. It's a very it's a gloomy reality, very gloomy reality. I I I I I'm dealing with this problem myself. There is a you know just in front of my eyes.

There is a drama recently took place. Huh you know, husband and wife, very nice girl, young girl, romantic girl, nice boy. I mean maybe not so nice. But still responsible, you know. They entered into relationship.

And everything in the beginning was so nice, was so beautiful, you know. And they came to me, please give us blessings. And I say, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, please. You know, take blessings. But try to serve each other.

Try not to expect anything from each other. You know, all you need as a spirit soul is to serve. All you need is to have somebody whom you can serve. What's the problem? You can serve in any condition.

You know, there is such a, you know, now he, he, he stabbed her. It's amazing. He's a devotee, he has been practicing for so many years. Still, you know, because his ego was hurt. She found out his selfishness.

She pointed out and told him, You're selfish, I don't want to live with a selfish person. His ego was so hurt that he wanted to hurt her back in a very gross way. I mean it's it's just unbelievable.

It's so painful even to see. But this is what happens in the material world unfortunately.

Solution for overcoming material false ego

This is what it is. Very nice beginning, very tragic end. And the result of this is unhappiness, perpetual sufferings in this material world.

And the solution is given, and it's a hidden solution, and I have to finish my little talk, but I still want to give you a little solution which is given the hint for the solution is given.

It's a very nice and beautiful hint which we have to understand very clearly. For the third time I say, my dear devotees, please listen very carefully. You know, because this is another important point. How to do this?

It's a vicious circle. The soul is already identifying with the body because through the ego, the body, the intelligence is filled with lust, the senses and mind naturally fill with lust. So what to do?

Where do we break this vicious circle? The ego is there. And the ego is so sensitive. It's so easy to hurt our ego. The selfishness is there because of the identification with the body.

And the soul is so tightly identified with the body. And the needs of the body are so obvious and so how you say tangible, so clear to us. It's very difficult to break this.

But there is, fortunately for us, there is a there is a hope. And this hope is there in this verse.

This is a beautiful verse which Prabhupada explains many, many, many times in different lectures and quotes in different purports. He really likes this verse. And it's very important for us to understand this verse.

Svadih Kala Tradishu, Baumai Jadih, Yat Tirta Buddhi, Salehana Karthichit Gyaneshva Big Yeshua Saevagokarah. So basically, this verse explains intelligence polluted with the lust.

This word Buddhi is repeated here several times, sometimes like buddhi, sometimes like di. It's the same. Dhi means intelligence, buddhi means intelligence. Yasyatma buddhi, kunapedri datuhe.

First, you know, if you if you have the intelligence of identifying yourself with the body which is consisting of three uh elements kapha, pita and vata, the bile, mucus and air, uh wind.

Yes, yatma budhi kuna petri dadokje. Prabhupata always points out that you know you think you are this body. This is another one problem. Basically, what is being described in this verse, the anatomy of material

self-identification. It's not that only it starts with identification with the body, then it goes further. Swadhih. Kalatra-ādiṣu. What is mine? Who is mine? Kalatra. Kalatra means wife and ādiṣu children and

relatives and everything. You know if I'm the body whoever is related with this body is mine. I more or less expand my ego or, uh, project my ego into other people. They are mine.

And, uh, sometimes, you know, and then next bhauma-jādiḥ, bhauma-jādiḥ means uh the land, my country is my country. This is this is this is me, you know. See how big I am. You know, I'm Russian, I am I'm the best.

Because Russia is the biggest. I am the biggest fool. Because I identify with the biggest chunk of land, you know? And you know there are so many other things.

Śrīla Prabhupāda in one lecture while commenting on this verse he says people, they say that the basically, literally, it means bhauma means the earth, ādiḥ means the earth, the land on which I have

been born is the object of my worship. You know, motherland or fatherland or whatever you call it. How you call it in Deutsch? Fatherland. Yeah, fatherland. My fatherland.

And Prabhupada says people worship this land on which they are born so much so that they're ready to die for this land. Isn't it crazy? Have you ever thought how crazy it is, you know? I'm ready to die for this land. Why?

Because this is me. And even if I die, Me in one sense will remain because this is the land and I will protect this is my land. This is all ego. This is all intelligence.

What is explained here, this anatomy of this, uh, lusty intelligence, the ātmā buddhi when I identify with the body, when I expand my ego to my relatives, then I expand my ego even further, I expand my ego into my land.

And then I expand my ego. This is the greatest expansion of my ego into my religion. This is my religion. This is my religion. And I will fight with whoever else belongs to different religion.

We will finish this Hare Krishna's vicious sect. We have to fight with them. Tīrtha-buddhi, you know, you identify with the superficiality of religion. You don't understand. Religion is not about this.

Religion is not about your false identity, not to fortify your false identity. Religion is to give you real knowledge.

But Tīrtha-buddhi, you know, I come to a nice holy place and you know somebody sprinkles me with some water. I once went to Russian Orthodox Church in London and I asked how many people you have.

He says, Oh, we have so many people, so many Russians and Ukrainians come on big, big festivals to get few drops of water, of holy water on their head. And we never see them in any other day.

But then the next big festival they'll come to get sprinkle some holy water. He says, but we have a few real Englishmen who are real, you know. devotees of George. They try to understand something. Most of the people.

Tīrtha-buddhi. Tīrtha-buddhi means, you know, what is religion? Religion is just some superficial ritual. And I identify with this religion. But please do listen carefully.

And it is said here in this verse that whoever behaves in such a way he is just like a go, like a cow or like an ass. Because of this buddhi, he is I identification, but as

Redefining identity through spiritual association

I said, there is a very beautiful hint how to break this vicious circle, how to get rid of this lusty intelligence. And this is being explained by Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura while commenting on this verse. Beautifully.

I I recently read it and I was so amazed and so uh moved by by this explanation. Because this is a real very important point which he says. What he says: here there are two very important verb in this versa.

Jñāneṣv abhijñeṣu. Jñāneṣu means people, human beings. Abhijñeṣu means those human beings who have knowledge, transcendental knowledge.

And usually Prabhupāda, while translating this verse, he only refers to these people who have transcendental knowledge. They are like sages and cows.

But Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura, he takes this jñāneṣv abhijñeṣu, these two words, people with transcendental knowledge, and refers them to any

other element of this false self-identification. He says that to break this vicious circle, to break this false identity, which is in the intelligence, how we can do it if we

listen carefully, if we instead of identifying with ourselves, with our body, try to expand our ego into the holy person in a sense that we should really care about him.

You know, we care about somebody whom we make a part of us.

If we do this, if a holy person will become, a holy man, will become a part of our identity of our very important part of our life and we will identify not with the body but with him.

If while thinking who is mine, who belongs to me, who is dear and near to me, we instead of you know bringing into this circle of close people, only my wife and immediate family, or maybe expanded family.

If we expand our understanding of family, that our real family is the family of spiritual people, people who have spiritual knowledge. Who am I? I am somebody related to somebody who has spiritual knowledge. Who is mine?

Mine, close people, family people, family, kinsmen, is people who have spiritual knowledge. What is worshipable, who is worshipable, who is the object of worship, not the land on which I am born.

The object of worship is somebody who has spiritual knowledge. And ultimately the spiritual knowledge is the object of worship. If our intelligence works in this way, and ultimately, what is religion?

Religion is the spiritual knowledge which is coming from the mouth of such people.

In other words, if we try to create our identity on the level of buddhi, because buddhi is something, the intelligence something which creates our identity, being next to the soul.

If we try to do it through our relationship with spiritual people, with people who have spiritual knowledge. This is where we can break the vicious circle.

In other words, the simple thing which the simple solution which is given in this verse or hinted in this verse is actually close association with saintly people and really not just close association because sometimes when we when we hear this word association we really uh have an image in the mind of some superficial association, physical proximity.

Association, yes, I come and I see it, yes, I I listen and lecture. Very good, very nice. When he will finish, the Sunday feast is should be coming, you know, and 10 minutes back already, you know, this is.

You know, what is he talking? But uh the real point of this verse, if we try to really take very closely somebody who has spiritual knowledge to our heart.

If we open our heart to such people, then only we will be able to break the vicious circle.

Once somebody came to Śrīla Prabhupāda and he said, Śrīla Prabhupāda, you always say that the super soul is sitting in the heart of every living entity. What about spiritual master?

This spiritual master is there in the heart of every living entity. Śrīla Prabhupāda looked at him and said, yes. As he would do, you know, with this long yes, yes. And then he said, if you let me in.

Yes, I'm in your heart, but only if you let me in so the point of spiritual life, the real solution in the spiritual life is to really to open our heart to let the people who have spiritual knowledge within our heart.

If this will happen, then the vicious circle or the problem of this lusty intelligence which is unsolvable otherwise which is practically uh practically you know you cannot do anything about it uh can be solved very easily.

And that's the only way. Everything else is just waste of time. You will just rotate in this, nice circle of saṁsāra. And the hope, which is there in intelligence, I will be happy finally.

It didn't work this lifetime, next lifetime it will work for sure. Yes. There is a nice Russian song. Everything will be happy. Everything will be nice. Everything will be nice. But everyone has this hope.

Everything will be nice, but no, it's Kali-yuga. It will not be nice. It will be worse and worse and worse and worse and worse. But there is a hope. The hope is there. Śrīla Prabhupāda gave us the hope.

He came to us without asking us whether we want it or not. And he gave us his association in the form of his books and his compassion and his love, and in the form of his purpose.

Anyway, so this is a few words which I wanted to say. Thank you very much.
