Reading Bhagavad-gita verse on peace
Thank you for inviting me. Yes, I was given a topic about anxiety and how to take shelter in the times of anxiety and fear. So I will read a very beautiful verse and purport from
Bhagavad-gītā from the fifth chapter. But Śrīla Prabhupāda basically explains it all. There is no need to say anything more but we can still talk little bit. So this is the verse number twelve. Om namo bhagavate vāsudevāya,
su devaya, omnamo Bhavateva su Devaya, Omnahobagavate Vasudevaya, Omnamo Bhagavate Vasudevaya, no Bhagavate Sudevaya, narayanamna mastrity namaskritya, naramcheva narotam, naramcheva narotam, devim saraswati Ya samasatinyasam Tato Jayamudiraya, Tato Jaya Mudhiraya.
So this is the verse number 12 from the fifth chapter of Bhagavad Gita, Karma Yoga X Yuktaha,
Yuktaha, Karma Palam, Karmapalam, Tyaktva, Santim, Santi, Ap notiki Ayuktaha Ayuktaha Kamakare Kamakare Pale, Saktaha, Saktaha, nibadhyate, yuktak karma palamtyakva, yukatarma palamtyatva, Yukta Karma Palamtyakva, Yukatarma Palamtyatva, Santima dinaistikim, Santimaistikim, Santimap not stikim, Shantima notinaistikim. Ayuktah Karmakarena, Ayukta karmakarena, Ayuktak karmakarena, Ayukta karmakarena, Pale sakonibadhyate, Sattoni badate, Pale sakto nibaddyate, sakomi Yuktak karma palamtyakva, Yukta karma palamtyakva, Santima notinaish tikkim, notinaishim, Ayukta karmakarena Ayukta Karmakarena Palisakto Nibadhyate Palesakto Nibadhyate Translation by Srila Prabhupada and his purport.
The steadily devoted soul attains unadulterated peace, because he offers the results of all activities to me. Whereas a person who is not in union with divine, who is greedy for the fruits of His labor becomes entangled.
The difference between a person in Krishna consciousness and a person in bodily consciousness is that the former is attached to Krishna, whereas the latter is attached to the results of his activities. The person who is attached to Krishna and works for him only is certainly a liberated person.
He has no anxiety over the results of his work. In Bhagavatam, the cause of anxiety over the results of work of an activity is explained as being one's functioning in the conception of duality, that is without knowledge of the absolute truth.
Vayam dvitiya bhinivesyat Śrīla Prabhupāda means this verse. In Krishna consciousness there is no duality. All that exists is a product of Krishna's energy and Krishna is all good.
Therefore activities in Krishna consciousness are on the absolute plane. They are transcendental and have no material effect.
One is therefore filled with peace in Krishna consciousness, but one who is entangled in profit calculating for sense gratification cannot have that peace.
That is the secret of Krishna consciousness, realization that there is no existence besides Krishna is the platform of peace and fearlessness.
Yukta Karma Palam Tyaktva Sandhi Mapnoti Naisti Kim, Ayuktak Karma Karina Pale Saktu Nibadhyate.
The steadily devoted soul attains unadulterated peace because he offers the results of all activities to me, whereas the person who is not in union with the divine, who is greedy for the fruits of his labor, becomes entangled.

Attachment to results causes anxiety
Hare Kṛṣṇa. So the question which was put in front of me uh to explain what is the cause of anxiety. And Srila Prabhupada very clearly says that there is only one cause of anxiety in this world.
That's the attachment to the fruits of our actions.
We are so much attached to the fruits of our actions, we always worried whether we will obtain the required thing, what we are doing, what we should do to really bring about success.
And in this way, our consciousness not in the work itself, but in the fruit of the work. And it creates tremendous tension inside us. Because if we are concerned with the work, and Krishna himself very clearly says
in the very beginning of Bhagavad-gītā, Karmanṇā evādhikāraste mā phaleṣu kadaṁcana, Yo Adikar, your right is to work.
And this we all know, we can work and if we are peacefully engaged in work and concerned with making the work as best as possible, as good as possible to the best of our abilities, then the result will come.
We don't have to worry about the result. But the moment when we start worrying about the result, whether it will come or not, what kind of result it will be.
We become completely mental because, as Krishna Himself says, the result does not depend on us. Karmani Eva Adhikaraste. Only karma is you're right. Maphalisukadachana. Never the ri the end result of it.
We never know whether our labor will be successful or not at the end of the day. You know, we may put all our heart and still there will be failure, or we may not do anything and the result will come.
There is some other factors involved. What we are in control, we are in control of what we can do. And if we concentrated on this and we're happy with the way we are doing this, we are happy because we are doing our best.
Then you know whatever result is there, it's ultimately up to Krishna. And you know, even if the result is not the way we initially planned or desired, we still remain happy because we did what we could do.
We did our best. We did the best of our abilities and you know well result didn't come, you know what can we do?
You know, like, uh, Bhakti Charu Swami, uh, he jokes, he came to Russia long back in in the beginning of the 90s. And he said that the first the first words which I learned in
Russian was "ni poluchilos". Ni poluchilos means it didn't happen.
So So I asked devotees to do something and they come and say it didn't happen. So and then he says, this is how devotees uh taught me to be detached from the results of the actions. It didn't happen. Didn't work out.
Didn't work out. But uh but that's a fact. You know, we know that sometimes we put all our endeavors, and it doesn't work, but sometimes
Role of divine involvement in action
we don't do so much, and the result is great. And therefore, in the very end of Bhagavad-gītā, Krishna explains the five factors of activity.
And he says that the fifth factor of activity, the fifth very important feature upon whom the result ultimately depends is Daiva. The involvement of God.
He is involved in every one of our action and He is actually regulating. He knows whether to give when to give us results and when not to give us results. So he knows what he is doing.
So if we are doing the work. Here Krishna is very clear about this. He says: Yuktaḥ karma-phalam tyaktvā śāntim āpnoti naiṣṭhikīm. He says that somebody who has connection with the divine.
Yuktaḥ means one who is engaged in karma-yoga, yuktaḥ. Yuktaha means basically somebody who is connected from the same verbal root yudj from which yoga comes and so many other words in Sanskrit.
So if somebody knows that God is involved, that God knows, God is in our heart, God is in everyone's heart, and He is regulating all our activities.
So, Yuktaḥ, karma-phalam tyaktvā, He renounces the attachment to the fruits of his actions. Karma-phalam tyaktvā. He doesn't renounce karma itself.
You know, usually people misunderstand this and they say, you know, if I don't have to be attached to the fruits of my action. Why should I be at why should I be doing work? Isn't it logical?
You know, if if I'm not supposed to be attached to the fruits, so why should I work at all? Because I'm working for the fruits. But Krishna says: no, you're working not for the fruits. You're working to express yourself.
To fulfill your mission in life, your your destination, you know you're working because you cannot really stop working.
Krishna says in the third chapter of Bhagavad Gita that one cannot stop working even for a split second. You know, even if we try to renounce all work, we're still breathing and we still have to take, you know, mm water.
And it's a huge labor, you know, to take a glass of water and drink. It's work itself. So it's a ridiculous concept to renounce work. It's a ridiculous concept. It's impossible.
It's people who are trying to do this they're destined for failure. You cannot renounce work, but you can renounce the attachment to the fruits of your action.
And therefore Krishna says, yuktak karma palamtyaktva shantimapnoti naishtikim. He obtains shanti peace of mind and not only peace of mind, naistikim.
Attaining steady peace through detachment
Naistikim is the word which is derived from the word nishta. We all know what is Nishta. Nishta means steady. So Naistiki Shanti means steady peace.
Sometimes we experience peace even when we attach to the fruits of our action. We sit in front of the TV and we have some sort of peace because our mind is distracted and you know but this is not steady peace.
This peace very easily can be changed into a lot of anxieties. As soon as this thought comes, what will be? What will be the future? Who will be the future Prime Minister of Great Britain?
When this nice gentleman, Rishi Sunak, goes away from the office. What will be the next year? What will be, you know, uh we're living in this very unsteady and unpredictable world. And there are so many causes of anxieties.
But ultimately, again, the cause of anxiety is not understanding that Krishna is in charge. And Krishna is all good. That he wishes good.
He ultimately wishes us good, and therefore you obtain peace when you are not attached to the fruits of action and when you understand that somebody who is very benevolent, a benevolent, all-powerful creature is in charge of the fruits. And he will give what I need. And he will not give what I don't need. Even if I think that I need it. And he doesn't give. It means simply that that you know I'm mistaken, I'm an illusion. You know, because he knows better.
We may fantasize and imagine that we have this success and that success, but we never know what will be the end result of this success. We may achieve something which we want, but the result will be horrible. You know, sometimes people they want to get married and then the result is very not nice.
Sometimes they want to they're going into opposite direction, they want to divorce, but you know, we don't know the end result of it. So the secret of peace is to understand that the result depends on Krishna.
He will give the results. He knows what he is doing. And we never we don't know what we're doing. All our plans are useless. You know, we we may achieve what we desired, but not happy at the end.
And therefore, Krishna says here next: Ayuktah Kamakarina,
the one who does not have this connection with God, who does not have this understanding and this mental connection that ultimately I'm a part of parcel of God and ultimately I'm dependent on Him and ultimately I have to, you know, work for Him.
Then I'm doing this, I'm doing my work, kamākāriṇa. I'm doing my work to fulfill my desires.
All my concern is that all my measurement the how you say this measure stick or what how you say this the how I measure my success is whether my desires are fulfilled or not.
And then Phale Asakta Nibadhyate, Krishna says, such person who is very attached to the fruit, phale, his attachment is in the fruit. I want this fruit, I want this result by all means. He is not only bound.
He is nibadhyate. Nibadhyate means nitarām bandhyate. Nitarām bandhyate means thoroughly bound. He is completely bound. He is bound by his actions, he is bound by the results of his actions,
Realizing dependence on God for peace
and he is ultimately bound by the anxiety which he is he is always under High Kiss. It's interesting that Bhagadatta Prabhu just entered at this moment of our discourse.
And he is a very good example of somebody who is suffering a lot of physical inconvenience and anxieties, but at the same time remains composed and peaceful.
Because there is a connection, because he knows that ultimately everything depends on God. I don't know if I'm allowed to tell the story which you told me yesterday? Or I should not? It's up to you, man.
I don't have to, but it's up to you. He told me yesterday that recently he had some near-death experience when he lost his consciousness.
And it was a very vivid experience when after basically giving up the body, passing away from the body, he still remained himself, and what he felt at this moment of time when he was not in anxiety about this present life, he felt a very deep and profound feeling of peace.
So, as long as we have this idea that everything depends on me, and I have to worry about this, and I have to work, and I have to do this, and you know, who will take care of me if I don't do this, we are in anxiety.
As long as we understand that ultimately everything depends on God. Uparwala as they say in Hindi. That everything depends on Uparwala.
So as long as we have this understanding that he is taking care of me, I'm in his hands. You know, as long as as soon as we give up this concept that I have to worry about myself, then we become very peaceful.
And this concept that I have to worry about myself is only there because we think that I'm the doer. Ahankara vimudhatma karta aham iti manyate, this is the ahankara. Everything depends on me. I have to do it.
And because we forget that God is also working actively. That God is also involved in our day-to-day activities. God is also a part of our life, and ultimately, He is the ultimate giver of the results, not us.
You know, the moment we and this is how the topic actually was formulated for me, what is the cause of anxiety and how to take shelter of Krishna.
The moment we really completely, we really, not theoretically, but on a practical level, in the level of our heart, take shelter of Krishna, means understanding that I am dependent on him even now. I will definitely be dependent 100% on him, 108% on him, the moment I leave the body.
But when we are in this body, and the body has this power and has this mind and this and that. We're prone to be in illusion that you know it depends on me. And especially the mind.
Mind is such a uh such a controlling entity, you know, the mind wants to control the environment. The mind wants to make it the way he wants.
And you know, as soon as he feels that he is not in the control, he becomes frantic. He becomes really, you know. But in reality we cannot do anything.
Overcoming overthinking and mental exhaustion
I I have personal experience. I will share this personal experience with you. It's it's a little humbling experience, but nevertheless I want to share it with you.
You know, at one point I I became very anxious because of you know constant stress and constant work. And you know, it's it's very I you know this concept which I'm talking about is very beautiful.
It's the beginning, it's the basis. But at the same time, and theoretically we understand this concept, but it's very difficult to apply it in practice.
As soon as we start acting, you know, we always think what will happen if I will not do this and I will not do that, you know, nothing will happen. Everything will f will go fine. You know.
Of course we should do dutifully what we're supposed to do because this is our duty. This is our Adiqar, this is our qualification to do. But you know, because of this program in our mind,
very strong program, I have to do it, I have to do it, I have to do it, I have to achieve result. What will happen if the result will be not to my liking? Oh no, it will be the end of the world.
No, the world will go on, no problem. So because of this chronic stress, your nervous system uh at one point strikes.
It becomes completely, you know, completely you become completely exhausted. That's the only result of anxiety. You know, it's not that you make sure that the result will come by worrying about it. Not at all.
That's not the result. The result will come or not come, that's a completely different consideration. But the sure result of anxiety is that you warned you you're becoming worn out by all these anxieties.
You become overstressed and you become completely, you know, unhappy ultimately. What happened with me, this is my confession in front of all of you.
You know, I specifically has chosen this small group so that I'm not so embarrassed. You know, over so many years I was in the stress and anxiety.
Of course I was I was chanting and you know there were very happy moments when I was preaching to people and doing kirten, but the rest the rest of the time I was in this condition. And the nervous system couldn't tolerate it any longer and at one point it went on strike.
Like now all this, you know, trained or whatever workers, they're on strike. So in the same way, your nervous system, you know, at one point says, enough is enough. You know, I cannot take it any longer.
I cannot take all these anxieties any longer. And then, you know, it's uh but the mind and mind uh mind become I was watching myself. What was the beauty?
The beauty of Krishna consciousness is that even in the most difficult situation you still can be in the position of observer. You still witness. You still can analyze what is going on. And it helps. It definitely helps.
So I was somewhat detached, but still I was observing what's going on in my mind. So the mind became very, you know, in a very strange condition. The mind wanted to control everything.
And because the mind wanted to control everything, there was not a second of peacefulness within the mind. And because mind became very, I remember very vividly this condition of the mind. The mind didn't trust anything.
You know, what will happen if if I'm not controlling anything? Anything can happen, you know, this this world is so cruel, this and that may happen. So as a result of it, I couldn't sleep.
The mind couldn't go to sleep, couldn't relax because the mind was thinking, you know, if I sleep, what will happen with me if I sleep? You know, anything can happen. And I have to be in control.
And then the mind started worrying that he cannot sleep.
And because he is in anxiety that he cannot sleep, the prospect of sleep goes even further because when the mind is in anxiety, how you can sleep? You cannot sleep when the mind is in anxiety. It's a vicious circle.
You went into this into this trap. The mind went into this This uh terrible trap. Why? Because of this habit of worrying. You know, we may not understand how deeply rooted this habit is.
We're worried, you know, with course and but usually without any cause. You know, we're worried about this and we're worried about that. You know, uh there is a joke about this. Very nice joke.
One man, one old man who had, you know, when you're coming to the old age, your your anxieties and worries become even more, you think what will happen with me? You know, this body is falling apart, and this, and that.
So many causes for anxiety. So he put an ad in the newspaper. I need somebody, I need some assistant who will take away my anxieties. And one young, unemployed man, he thought it's a good opportunity.
I'll come to this old fool and you know I will take his anxieties. So he came to him and said, you know, okay, I'm ready. I am ready to take your worries and anxieties, no problem.
He said, yes, very good, very good young man. So the young man said, so how much will you pay me monthly? He said, no problem, I will pay you one thousand dollars every month. He said, Oh yeah, really, very nice, you know.
So and then he asked him, the old man, you know, so so how and when you will pay me? He said, this will be your first anxiety. This will be your first, well, you can start your job.
The the point of this little joke is that you know we're used to being anxiety for reason and without reason. But ultimately the uh underlying uh mentality behind it is that we don't trust God.
We don't, in the ultimate issue, we don't trust God, this mistrust, which may have some, you know, some basis to it, but ultimately it's completely
ridiculous you know and uh and therefore we become, uh, niśānta. We lose our uh sleep and we lose our peace of mind. So if we want to really work without stress.
If we really want to learn this work, how to work without stress, we should not be attached to the fruits.
Examples of detachment in practice
You know, I there is a beautiful story which you may have heard. It's Harikesha Rama Maharaj, he was telling this story when Śrīla Prabhupada was a very tense, you know, tense.
Yeah, first another story about Śrīla Prabhupāda.
You know, old men, 70 plus old men, you know, traveling all over the world, arranged a new religious movement which has so many problems, so many new records, they do so much nonsense.
And how Srila Prabhupada maintained his peace. How he could be being the leader of this movement, completely strange sort of movement? Prithu Prabhu told the story that once Srila Prabhupada came to France and
there were so many devotees and it was in New Mayapur and they were waiting for ...he arrived in Māyāpur and they arranged a nice vyāsāsana. It was a huge vyāsāsana. It was huge Vyasasan.
At that time they had this very, you know, royal style of vyāsāsana. They were big as sofas.
So Prabhupada sat down, and you know, there was a crowd of people, many, many people anxiously waiting for him to speak, and he started speaking, and then after some ...he laid down in front of everyone and started sleeping. Very peacefully.
And everyone is sitting there. But it means that here is somebody who is completely peaceful. He can sleep even in this condition. He is detached.
He is not in complete anxiety, how people will take me, what people will make out ...what will, you know, he's, he's just peaceful. He's here, he's doing his best.
At the same time he is very peacefully, you know, need is there, you know, he sleeps. And then after a few minutes he woke up and started talking again. No problem. With the same calmness and composure and everything.
You know, and, uh, Harikeśa Swami Mahārāja, he explains another story which is one of my favorites of Prabhupada's stories when you know this movement is there and so many problems are there, especially during this Mumbai Bombay struggle for the land, Juhu, Juhu land and everything, and court cases.
And you know in America the programmers took the movement in..pressu
...and the secretaries of Śrīla Prabhupāda, they knew that this telegram something is terrible in the telegram.
So Srila Prabhupada opened the telegram, he read a few lines there very calmly, and then without showing any signs of stress or anxiety, he went to his room.
And Harikeshma said, I couldn't contain myself. So I put my eye into the keyhole to look.
And he said what I saw was very amazing. He said that Prabhupada lay down on the floor and started laughing. He was just laughing very peacefully.
And he said at this moment I felt as if demigods are you know showering flower petals upon him. So that's that's what this verse is all about.
And again, as I said, this concept is simple, beautiful, rational, understandable, very difficult to apply in reality. Extremely difficult to practice it because because of the habit.
You know, this habit of worrying about the results of our work is so deeply rooted that we cannot even understand, you know, how deeply it is. It's very difficult to uproot it.
So therefore, one solution is that we have to hear about it again and again and again.
Understanding the soul as dependent agent
Not everything, you're not the doer. You're not the doer in a sense that we are doers. Definitely. We have this ego. We're supposed to do something. We are doers. But we're not an independent doer.
You know, when in Bhagavad-gītā Krishna says you're not the doer, he means this because in the 13th chapter and later in the 18th chapter, uh he says that no, you're doer. The agency is there in the soul.
The ability to act, the desire to act is there in the soul. We as a soul we are acting. But we are not an independent doer. That's the concept which has to be very clearly ingrained within our heart.
I'm not an independent doer, it means that not everything depends on me. And the only thing which depends on me is how how well I'm doing my duty, how well I'm doing what I am supposed to do.
Everything else is in the hands of God. I did my part, the rest is his part, and let him do what he should do.
So that understanding or that concept of which Krishna explains here is Is uh what what was it I wanted to say in continuation? Yeah.
This concept generally gives a very balanced understanding of how I should interact with this matter. Because the interaction with this matter is very troublesome.
We all know this this material world is a very difficult place and not very always happy place. So and you know, we have these two extremes.
In the beginning, we are very eager to work, to achieve some success, to enjoy the fruits of our actions, and then after doing it for some time, after getting a lot of you know a lot of problems upon our head, upon a lot of strikes from material nature, this and that, we're going to another extreme.
We say, no, I will not work at all. You know, in the beginning this is the first initial idea. Yes, I should work and I will be successful.
When young people are there in the school, you know they look at this all these old people and they say, oh, these old people they're just, you know, they're just they're failures. And I will be successful.
I know what I will do. I will be I will make it. Yeah, in a few years they will be the same like this. All frustrated people. But the opposite idea is equally wrong. You know, the idea that I will become successful is wrong.
The idea is that I should renounce all my work and I should sit and meditate and go somewhere in Himalayas and you know be completely detached is also wrong. This is post-wrong ideas.
And it's very difficult for our ego to stay somewhere in the middle. Ego likes extremes. Either one extreme or another extreme. So the pendulum of our ego goes from one side to another side.
And Śrīla Prabhupāda explains this in the introduction of the nectar of devotion, about this pendulum, you know. Bhogatyaga, Bhagatyaga, Bhogatyaga, Bhagatyaga. But there's no Krishna in it. Boga is not Krishna.
Because you want to enjoy this world and you want to lord it over. Tyaga is not Krishna. Because you just want to renounce and give it up and you can't care less about Krishna.
There is no Krishna in this equation, Boga Tyaga. Krishna is in between.
When you work dutifully, nicely, diligently, as mm, as well as you can, perform your duties, but at the same time ultimately you're not attached to the works, uh to the to the fruits of works.
And in in this uh peaceful condition, the possibility of your connection with God appears. You actually cannot be connected with God while you are in anxiety. You know, every one of us has this experience.
You are in complete anxiety, you try to chant, and it just doesn't work. You know, it's just it's too difficult.
You try, Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, but your mind is all over the place, the mind is not really. To be connected with God, you need to be peaceful.
To be peaceful you have to have a very clear idea. Not everything depends on me. Ultimately everything depends on him. Even now I am completely in his hands.
You know, like in the story which I told, you know, when when we have this near death experience, we understand we are in his hands. And that's why we don't like this we're so afraid of dying.
The death is so fearful for us because we know that at the moment of death we are not in control. And we're so used to being in control. And it's such a it's such a horrible idea that all of a sudden I'm not in control.
How is that possible? You know, I I'm I'm you know I'm the Lord and Master of this little house in London and how how I can all of a sudden be nobody
Story of Lord Buddha giving detachment
be yeah. And uh uh there is a very nice interesting story of Lord Buddha. Very interesting story. We know his life that he left his family uh
at a young age. His wife was pregnant when he left, or just gave birth to his son, and he left and became enlightened, became Buddha, started his movement, so many followers, so many disciples.
And at one point he decided to go back to his wife. He wanted to visit her. And when he came she became furious by seeing him. She started yelling at him and you know and saying, you know, you are nonsense, you're covered.
You left at night without saying a word to me. You left me with this little baby and this little son is now you know he grew up.
It was eight years later the son was eight years old. And And uh uh and Buddha was very calm, Gautama. She was yelling at him and yelling and yelling and yelling, and he was peaceful, peaceful.
He was saying, you know, you know this, this is the life, and you know, he was very peaceful. And ultimately she she wanted to play a trick with him. She wanted to get him back to home.
So she called their little son who was eight years old at that time. And this little son came, you beautiful boy. And she said, so now you are his father. He grew without a father. So what are you going to give to him?
You should give something to him. This is your duty as the father. And Buddha, he thought for a moment. And he asked his servant, Ananda, and Ananda, Ananda, bring me my begging bowl.
And he took his begging bowl and he said, My dear son, this is the best thing which I want to give you. This is my begging bowl, take it.
And uh meaning that, you know, otherwise you will become a king. And you will become in complete anxiety. You know, don't, don't be in anxiety, just and depend ultimately on God. His wife was shocked.
She didn't expect this. His wife didn't really like it. But he wanted to share this experience that ultimately, you know, all this anxiety is to teach us that we should not depend on our mind.
We should depend ultimately on Krishna. And that's what is uh what Krishna calls here yuktaha. If you become yuktaha connected with God, then the anxiety will be gone.
And when your anxiety will be gone, your connection with Krishna will be strengthened. It's mutually dependent things. You know, initially you have to renounce the attachment to the fruits. Some little peace comes.
When you're not so much in anxiety, what will happen with me? You know, it will happen, no problem. You know.
You know, I I remember once, uh, you know, in the very beginning, in the beginning of 90s, we had this little temple in Moscow,
was a rented house, and it was a very turmoiled condition in the country, and you know sometimes even big governmental officials would come to us and speak. So one very sympathetic person from the government came once and
he started speaking, and we were talking, it was nice conversation, and then he he decided to give us advice.
He said, You know, you're nice people, you're nice guys, but what I think you should do to achieve success in this country for your movement, you should start giving predictions to people.
And if you give predictions, people are there very because you know at that time Russia was in such a chaos, you know, and people were in complete anxiety about the future and therefore all these astrologers and they were very popular, you know, they were telling this will happen and this will happen and you know, the peace will come to
and and they were so he said you should start doing this. He said, we're already doing this. He said, really? Yeah, I said, yes. We are predicting people their future. He said, really? Yes.
We're telling them that they will die. This is very accurate prediction. He didn't like it.
But ultimately understand that you know what what what is the what is the point, you know, this life is given to us to develop connection with God. And this we can do even now.
Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, Hare Hare, Rāma Rāma, Rāma, Rāma. So that's that's a few points about anxiety and how to take shelter of Krishna at these moments.
Handling injustice and proper motivation
Maybe there are some questions. So when uh sometime we like uh in work situation we feel there is injustice or you know unfair treatment so then we get two kinds of advice, one through our mind or through our surroundings.
One is just accept the situation, you know, like if you're and consider that, you know, your destiny is driving you in a certain direction, accept and move on. And then second kind of advice we get is fight with it.
Stand for it, fight for it and then there are uh examples you know from Shastra like Arjuna had to fight and all that. So I mean what is the right way or approach of things to be taken in this situation?
There is no one answer to this. Both of these possibilities can be right and can be wrong in different situations depending on on the circumstances, depending on us.
Sometimes you know the best way is to just you know accept it and go on with life. Sometimes it's necessary to stand for it and to fight.
It really depends and depends on your uh you know on on your mental strength, on the you know it it it there's no the the main point is not what you do externally but in which consciousness you do it. The consciousness, this is what matters. If you ultimately doing it for Krishna, and if you feel that by fighting for
it you will achieve some good result for Krishna and for you know at least you you are standing for the right cause and it's necessary. And uh your motivation is not for yourself but for Krishna.
uh uh of course you know the self uh how to say this self-deception mechanisms are very strong and sometimes we may feel that I'm doing it for Krishna but in reality we want it for ourselves.
But if we really train our mind and uh examine it, you know what is uh what is more beneficial in terms of my connection with Krishna. Sometimes it's better not to get into trouble and just go on with life and let it go.
You know, sometimes it's necessary to fight. So it's uh it's you should ask yourself for whom yeah I am doing it.
Am I doing it because I just want cosy life and I don't want anxiety and I am uh letting this injustice happen. Whereas it's not right, and some other people will also suffer because of this injustice.
And I'm pretending that I'm peaceful Bhakti and therefore, humble Bhakti and therefore I don't care. Or we should ask, you know, why I'm fighting because my ego is hurt.
You know, if the wrong motivation is there, the action will be wrong. If the right motivation is there, then the action will be right. So uh it's a question of motivation.
We first have to establish very clearly and strongly, this is the motivation I'm guided by. And then when the motivation is right, the action will be right by definition. So that's that's the solution for this.
Dealing with severe anxiety and support
Um thank hi. Thank you so much. That's really helpful. Um I know someone who is going through a lot of anxiety and uh they've tried a lot of different things, seen different doctors.
It's come to the point where the doctor said that it may be worth giving this person um antidepressive medication like Prozac.
So you mentioned it's difficult to have a deep connection with Krishna and have that trust when you're going through stress and um I can say I will certainly share this information.
I was making notes with with the person, but any guidance you can give or what else I could share with them to avoid going down there.
In such conditions some external help may be necessary because when as I said it's very easy to get into a vicious circle.
You know when your anxiety will be self perpetuating and not only self perpetuating but self-exaggerating. You know, the anxiety it's it will be like chain reaction, you know.
The anxiety will breed anxiety and uh even more anxiety and more anxiety. So, to break this vicious circle, you may need an external help.
Of course, I'm not a great proponent of all these uh artificial chemical medicines which ultimately create more harm than they help. But in some situations it may be necessary, you know.
We should not be fanatical in this regard, sometimes it may be necessary.
But you know, ultimately we should also work internally on this problem understanding that the ultimate cause of this anxiety, fear, depression, and all this sort of emotional thing is my lack of trust to God.
So, in this regard, besides medical help, the help of devotees who are near you, who are caring, is even more important because you feel the trust to God when you you know feel or when you enter the trustful relationship with the devotees.
When you're surrounded by this supporting support when you are in this condition in this environment, emotionally supportive environment, then it's easier in general to overcome this condition.
You know, now so many people suffer from this. So many people have this problems, you know, fear, anxiety. Because this is, you know, the the the whole atmosphere is very
it's from Ayurvedic point of view it's all Vata disorders. Vata disorders ultimately create anxiety and fear. Vata has this emotionally the condition of Vata is fear, is of fear.
And because our civilization, our culture is so much Vata disturbing. It's very nervous culture. It's neurotic culture. The whole culture is very neuro-
The relationship between people is very neurotic. The culture in the you know in the workplace, in the offices are very, you know, stressful. It's very stressful culture and and uh it's not uh and
people are mean and nasty to each other and sometimes even devotees are mean and nasty to each other because of this you know programming. So it's all unfortunate. So besides taking some medical help, of course
better to have some more natural help like Ayurved or whatever. But besides that, what is very important is to have the environment which would be which would give you some protection and security.
Then you will feel more relieved. You know, and vice versa, if you are in an environment which is very, you know, not very nice, then the problem will be only worsened with the passage of time.
So and unfortunately the whole world is going in this direction, you know. Families become more and more, you know, more and more tense. The environment is not really nice.
Because everyone in this concept and ultimately the the the ultimate cause is the lack of God consciousness. Lack of understanding that God is in charge and He knows what He's doing.
Everyone has his ego and wants to establish his rule and His ways. Thank you.
Balancing basic needs and contentment
Yes, Krishna, what, okay? Okay, you okay? Um sometimes we feel that we have basic needs, basic material needs that we need to fulfill to be able to practice Kṛṣṇa consciousness, and that basic need varies for devotees.
So it may be the cleanliness, it may be the pillow you sleep on. It may be, you know, it can be from very large—yeah, of course. And uh and often if you don't have those things it actually creates anxiety,
such anxiety that you can't practice Kṛṣṇa consciousness in a peaceful way or at least in a progressive way because you feel like you just need those things to practice.
And I suppose the difficulty is knowing how far you go with those basic needs.
If they're not there and then secondly like how do you decide whether the that circumstance needs to be changed so that you can have those basic needs or whether it's
the mindset that needs changing, because in your class, marh, a lot of it was around mindset. But sometimes you feel like if that circumstance doesn't change, I just I simply cannot practice.
That's true, that we all have basic requirements and without fulfilling these requirements we may feel very uncomfortable and very uh uneasy, so to speak. That's true. But at the same time, mind is
programmable if there is such a word in English. You can program your mind. And, for example, in yoga there are these five yamas and five niyamas, and one of the yamas is santosha, means satisfaction with what you have.
So if from you know we should endeavor to achieve what we feel we need, but at the same time we should also work with our mind and try to be satisfied with what we have.
Because the mind, you know, has the tendency to become too, you know, capricious or whatever, you know, over small things. And it's good to work with the mind and say, no, this is fine, no problem, this is good.
This is, you know, this pillow is okay. You know, sometimes people are particular about all these little details of their environment. So these both things should be there.
You know, some basic needs should be there, and you know, there is no harm uh in trying to achieve them because this is you know this is some some sort of concept.
But, you know, and at the same time if you work with the mind and say that maybe this this BMW car is okay and you don't need Tesla. Maybe it's it's not such a crucial crucial element or whatever.
You know, because we can see, you know, I because I live in Govardhana uh every night I go out and I walk a little bit near Govardhan. And I see how people, you know, they sleep on the earth, on the ground.
They may have little something, they may not have, and you know there is you know light is there, the music is going on, it's cold, you know, or it may be very hot and sleeping peacefully and I I'm you know, I'm mm I'm going I'm passing by them and I'm working with my mind, you know you know they can be peaceful in this condition. So theoretically you can also be peaceful in this condition.
Of course if you too artificially you know place yourself in in this environment that may not be so good but uh you know at the same time it very much really depends on, you know, how you how your mind works,
you know. So these two things should be simultaneous. That, you know, it's fine. What I have is is okay.
This is like, you know, when you ask Guru Maharaj what is your health? So his standard answer is better than I deserve.
So and uh yeah, so if if we are if we always see our condition as being better than we deserve, then we may be more peaceful about this.
Working effectively without mental anxiety
But again, uh we should not be too artificial, should not, you know, should not try to yeah, uh some basic needs should be there, that's for sure. We should not be too you know, artificially impose uh upon ourselves something which we cannot really use Um
I was just wondering if you could give some advice on how to navigate situations where you're working with other people and a very specific result is required and expensive See.
Krishna never says that you will not get the result. The result will come. You know, the he's talking about wasting your energy on the anxiety about the result.
You know, we should try to get the result and work as nicely and as diligently as possible.
But at the same time, you know, like people, uh, you know, students, they uh or this young children after graduating school, they go and they write an exam, right? And they wrote an exam. And what will happen with them?
You know, the results of exam will come in three days. So what they will do this three days? They will be in complete anxiety. What is the use of this anxiety?
You know, the result will come, it doesn't depend whether you be anxious or not. You already submitted your papers, you know uh but
because we have this uh understanding very deeply that if I don't worry the result will not come. That's the problem. And this is the false concept. Whether you worry or not, the result will come.
Result does not depend on your worry. But we have this idea that unless I worry, worry, worry, worry, worry, you know, the proper result will not come.
No, the result will the better result will come if you don't worry, because worry means you wasting your energy. Your energy is wasted, your mental energy is wasted.
You become completely, you know, the entropy of your mind is increasing and you're not interacting properly with this material nature.
So Krishna is saying this is the art of work, how to work without being entangled in it. Don't worry about this. Do it. Definitely do it.
Do it very nicely. Result will come. You know, but don't worry, you know, worry about Krishna. You know, whether he has nice prasadam today or not. I have this question. What to do with the anxiety during your service?
Sometimes actually even uh when we are doing pujari service for example, dressing the deities, there is some anxiety as well, isn't it, because of the time of different circumstances.
So how to deal with this kind of anxiety? Again the same answer is there. Anxiety doesn't help you to get the work done. Anxiety makes you less concentrated on the work because you
are more concentrated in your head about the anxieties. Whereas to do it properly, to do it on time, you have to be really focused. And to be focused, you should be anxiety-free, you should be peaceful.
Yes, I'm doing what I'm supposed to do. Yes, and you know, it may not happen, but you know I'm doing my best. And of course, you know, if it's about Krishna, that's transcendental, that's not a problem. It's little tricky.
There is another very nice story about Śrīla Prabhupāda, very nice story so I was just in Toronto and in Toronto the the temple in Toronto is in a beautiful place in a very central location. It's a former church.
It's huge temple room with very high ceiling. Beautiful building. So the devotees, they were quite poor, they started this work in Toronto. And then some Christian group who owned this building,
n and they approached them and they said, oh, whatever, you know, there was this opportunity to buy this building. So, you know, the leader of the devotee group at that time calls Srila Prabhupada.
Śrīla Prabhupāda says, you know, Śrīla Prabhupāda, we have this beautiful building and a very nice location, and you know, so Prabhupada how much does it cost? And I don't remember the exact figure.
For example, you know, $200,000. And they how much do you have? They say, we have maybe twenty thousand dollars. Śrīla Prabhupāda says, no. Forget it. Why do we need headaches? We don't need headaches.
We should peacefully chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. We don't need headaches. So this devotee puts on receiver, Śrīla Prabhupāda puts on receiver. You know, after a few minutes the telephone is ringing. Śrīla Prabhupāda is asking.
You know, and how big is the is the building? And where exactly it's located? And this devotee. And then, uh, uh, and then, you know, and Prabhupāda said, and how much it costs? said, and how much it costs?
He said, that much, he said, no, no, why should we have headache? So next day, she was Prabhupāda again calling, you know, and he says, so it's uh it's two hundred thousand.
So can we, uh, bargain with them and make it less and this and, uh, and Prabhupāda and then and then Prabhupāda says, and this and uh and Prabhupada and then and then Prabhupada says, I'm coming to Toronto.
So he came to Toronto. I want to see this building.
And then they go and then Prabhupāda says, calls BBT, and he says, now you have to raise this much money with buying this building. have to raise this much money with buying this building.
And then this temple president asks, Prabhupāda, why should we have headache? Why should we, you told we should not have headache? And Prabhupada says, no, we need headaches. Otherwise you will just sleep.
So from why should we have headaches to to complete opposite. We need you need headaches. So sometimes it's it's necessary, you know, to to stimulate us.
Developing trust through gradual practice
For Krishna it's it's okay. Don't trust Krishna, and I guess we're all on that journey. So what what can we do to increase our trust in Krishna? Well, we can try to trust him a little more.
like this, you know, of course we cannot really go from this place to completely different space in a big jump.
But we can trust to be a little more trustful saying, Krishna, you know, I, I know that everything depends on you. Krishna, you know, I I know that everything depends on you. And see how Krishna reciprocates.
It's often the case, you know, devotee, he says, you know, I'm, I'm in this anxiety or that, and you know what will happen. anxiety or that, and you know what will happen.
And Krishna gives him either solution or, and sometimes it's in a very miraculous way. way. You know. I've seen it many, many times.
You know, devotees, they have some sort of anxiety, but if it's good anxiety in regard to, you know, their Krishna consciousness, Krishna somehow or other fulfills the desire, makes the arrangements in a very, sometimes absolutely mysterious way. in regard to, you know, their Krishna consciousness, Krishna somehow rather fulfills the desire, makes the arrangements in a very sometimes absolutely mysterious way.
You know so it's a question of approaching God with your anxiety. You come in front of Him and you tell Him, Krishna, I have this anxiety. Please take this anxiety. This this is my humble offering to you.
Please take this anxiety and help me with this anxiety. And you will see the reciprocation of Kṛṣṇa. You know, it's a question of sincerely asking Him, you know, take care of this.
And you know, he said, uh you know, this is what I'm supposed to do, this is very important, you know, I'm I'm helpless, help. And Krishna helps.
If you're very sincerely, Krishna actually enjoys to help somebody who is very helpless in this helpless condition who is approaching him? So yeah. Unless you really try, you will never increase your level of trust. Yes.
Um uh it's something I I I I I suppose I learned from um uh my Shushivaruala Klangana uh that um her incredible tolerance um but but the
view she had on it was that actually whatever's in justice or uh seemingly wrong actions happening, um I asked her one day, you know, brother Clayton, you were right, you know um
And she said yes yes actually Kṛṣṇa's just giving me the medicine. It's the um the curative um measure measure that actually this somehow come from Krishna and the the uh he s he's looking after me.
And um uh th there's a similar situation that you you c we we have to know our helplessness.
And to be honest, uh you know, like uh as you say a work situation, whatever it is, we really have to look to ourselves, so-called just or unjust, and actually look at it from their point of view that I'm working with person, he's my supervisor, he might be an idiot, but it doesn't matter.
Because Kṛṣṇa put him there. He's my authority. I should acknowledge I can't uh help uh that person with their situation. Um and so um there there's nothing we can do.
But also um we have to look it up on our um position of um that am I being pigheaded which I've been called before and or am I um I see a way of doing things and I I keep to it as best I can until somehow I get the message that maybe I I'm not so clever. You know, like in my marriage, I wasn't so clever.
Um and I wasn't very uh tolerant but actually um I I uh you know maybe um I was uh uh unkind i in my marriage
or selfish and I had to realize that and that's what made it the the there would no bitterness take place because I had that realisation that actually somehow I learned something that maybe I'm a very difficult person to live with.
Very, very difficult. And so actually that eased my pain because I I had that realization that actually that no I I I read uh I had I had to read what I'd actually started off
but I I wasn't um I was I was selfish and I and I always thought I was always right, you know, and all these sort of things. So um we we we have to look at our position with with honesty and it worked.
Um uh you know, if that person's right, um I it's not a case of just giving in, it's a case of looking at your self-consciously and saying, Lo, oh my God, they're right, I've made a mistake. And we have to make a mistake.
Yeah. Actually things that that that were sent to try us are certainly uh tests from Krishna. And I had a hellish time in hospital. Cruel things that happened, you know, it's unbelievable. I was beaten.
But when I came away there, I came up, I thought to myself, if I keep this in my mind, I'll never move on. I have to see it as is is somehow Krishna.
And no matter what I say now, I don't want to set bitterness in place. And about what happened. But I have to uh be uh very careful on what situations I put myself in.
And um so um I just try and treat it is that actually that whatever happened to me it it is Krishna behind it, that actually it is there must be some it must be some justice justice that that's that uh is is is coming into my life and I have to to uh uh face up to that and that uh that help ease my um my
situation just or unjust you know what the kind of Krishna's just giving me medicine you know for the situation somehow we have to learn to be that wonderful prayer, isn't it? tat-sthānā.
You know some people say oh you're not apt, but it's not it's to understand actually our real position. You know, that we are um lower than the straw of the street compared to um you know what uh the the the the what we see ourselves.
And that may be um that actually we should be more tolerant than true, devoid of all civil prestige and give all respect to it, is it? That's the real situation. You know, just respect the situation real.
Um I can't think of uh anything else than than what like you were saying, Maharaj, about the old age. What what's the formula you said in the other now? Maybe this seems alike a bit depressing.
We have to go through these stages. But um but you you can't do anything about it. Yeah. You're helpless. Yeah. So uh and as Tommy said to me, he said, make the best use of a bad bargain as it comes.
I was just in America and I was giving class and uh
Practicing contentment and internal acceptance
at the end of the class one lady raised a hand and said, you know And I asked you, do you have any choice Yes.
I I actually have similar questions uh because my reach you said uh that um one of the yaman the first yaman is uh to try uh to program the satisfied so that's actually my question. So how do we do that?
Is it like a specific practice or do we just see it every day say okay, I'm gonna accept everything, what is coming my way, no matter how I feel? It's a practice.
You know, uh how specific it is uh it's a practice, but uh the practice is exactly this, you know, we practice by uh taking what is happening with me and saying, you know, okay, that's fine.
You know, there may be something behind it which I don't know. You know, the part of our anxieties, the reason of our anxieties is that we only see the very narrow picture. We don't see the complete picture.
We don't know the cause behind it. We don't know the consequences of it. We only see very limited. Our vision is very limited. But Krishna sees the complete picture.
He knows the cause behind it, and he knows what will happen after that if this happened or that not happen. So if we try Krishna consciousness means we try to see the world the way he Krishna sees.
And even though we don't know the cause and we don't know the consequences, we still,
You know, we say this situation, uh, where I am in must be right because because how otherwise it is. It must be good ultimately for me.
So, you know, it's, it's, it's a practice of trying to rationally understand that there is a cause behind it and there is a consequence, and perhaps if I take it in a
proper way, it will be the best for me, rather than, you know, just resist to it. Because when you're resisting, especially to very strong... I again, there is there is a room for resistance definitely.
If the situation is not very favorable, like Śrīla Prabhupāda, he resisted a lot. But at the same time, internally, he was ready to accept anything which happens.
So externally you may fight the situation, externally you may try to establish something which is favorable. But internally you are surrendered ultimately to any outcome, whatever is there.
So this internal thing, you know when when you are constantly resisting this situation. It's such a, such a tremendous waste of energy, you know.
So internally, we should be very careful by accepting this, and externally, we should you know try to improve it as much as possible.
Controlling emotions through the ego
But the Santosha means we work with our internal reaction to the situation, trying to moderate it, trying to make it more moderate and more balanced.
I I understand obviously that the scriptures and the hearing from uh devotees of the Lord and our environment can help us rationalize or rationally accept it.
The problem comes when, especially in a lady's body and sometimes even men I can see emotionally they struggle with that because one thing is to rationalize what is happening to you.
The other thing is to emotionally go through that and actually be satisfied because I will not give an easy answer to this question, but it's a real answer. Emotions ultimately depend on ego. Ego is the key to emotions.
And ego is this program within us which is fighting for our survival, you know, this very strong thing. So there is rational intelligence.
There is emotional mind with all these emotions, anxieties, and everything, and there is ego. So just by rational mind we cannot pacify emotions. It's very difficult. Emotions are stronger than the rational mind.
We may understand everything rationally, still, emotions will take over because we are ultimately very emotional beings.
Emotion is a very strong energy which controls us. But ego controls the emotions. So to influence the emotions, you should try to modify your ego.
If your ego is, if your the concept of your ego, who I am, is very much connected with Krishna, you know, and Krishna is in charge and this and that, then the ego will not, you know, will cool the emotions down.
The intelligence will not cool them down. It is not strong enough to cool the emotions down. Therefore, when we're trying to rationalize it, it just doesn't work. The emotions say no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
But the key to emotions is to work with ego. Therefore, you know when on a level on a deeper level of our being we say I belong to God and He knows what He's doing, this and that.
Again, not rationally but in a in a very how to say this in a very sincere way, you know, yes, I I I am yours, you know, on on a very deep level of my being. Then the emotions will cool down.
You know, that that's that's the that's the key. And therefore every day we have to work on ego and again, you know,
but it's again it's not so easy because it's very deeply rooted, not on a level of, we only know how to work with this rational intelligence. That's easy. But it doesn't solve the problem. It's not the solution.
But it helps. You know, the rational intelligence helps to influence your concept of yourself and it can uh ultimately help to shape it in a proper way. But you know that's that's the point.
And of course what we also need, you know, ego is formed by our relationship.
If we have very strong relationship, and because uh the is the foundation of who we are, you know, and ultimately, of course, relationship is Krishna, relationship with God.
So if we build up, or you know, stress this point of relationship, then the emotions can be controlled only.
You know, if this, and that's what a saintly person means. Say saint, what is the difference between a saint and an ordinary person? Saint is completely fearless. That's one, you know, one sure characteristic of a saint.
Why he is fearless? Because his ego is different. The fear, the strongest emotion which is there, is coming from the ego. And if we still falsely identify with the matter, the fear will be there.
Like Prabhupāda, he doesn't quote, but he indicates this verse Bayam dviathi sadha petasyaviparias. When our mind is concentrated on the matter, then the fear comes.
And how you change it, you change it as Krishna or as this uh Kavi Yogendra Kavi Yogendra uh one of the yogendras uh who pronounces this verse he says you changes through the relationship with your guru and with God in the environment of relationship with devotees. Then your ego changes. When your ego changes, you're fearless.
You know, like this famous story when Prabhupada was asked, how do you feel when you chant Hare Krishna? And he says, I feel no fear. That's his characteristic. I feel no fear because God is there.
And I'm chanting and I know He's there. And therefore I feel no fear. So that's what it is, because again, the key to the emotions is ego. And that's what we have to work on by by chanting and by everything else. Who I am.
Accepting present circumstances over analyzing causes
I am a part of God. May I ask just to understand a little bit more about something you said earlier?
Um how much should we try to understand the cause of anxiety in a relationship, whether it's karma, the need for us to learn something, um keep Krishna teaching us, yeah, something, versus just accepting.
Uh It's a waste of time to try to understand exactly the cause of everything, you know, because we will never know the you know, the complete cause. It's not it's not very helpful. It's not very helpful.
Because all these causes are there, the karma is there, element of karma is there, your mistakes in this life are there, you know, the Krishna may be teaching you. But how do you know? How do you distinguish?
And what is the use? Ultimately, this is the situation. You have to accept it and deal with the situation with the proper motivation and proper frame of mind, proper understanding.
Rather than trying to discover the cause because again we have this uh strange conception that if I know the cause I can deal with the problem. But you will never know the cause exactly. Okay, I think we should end.
Now it's long enough. Thank you very much. Hare Kṛṣṇa.
