And even though it is a mundane occasion, there is nothing transcendental about the 31st of December.

We still take advantage of these festivities which are going on all over the world to remind ourselves of the eternal nature of devotional service.

Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura explains that we should try to engage in Krishna's service everything which is there. And he makes very paradoxical point.

He says we should all we should even try to engage the time in the service of Krishna. You can ask this question: how can I engage the time in the service of Krishna?

But the principle of devotional service is that whatever is there you should engage in the service.

Krishna bhakti-dātā Krishna is the and Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura Thakur explains that by engaging the time in the service of Krishna by celebrating certain occasions, uh fasting, uh increasing our devotional service like Janmashtami or ekādaśī. This is the way to engage the time in the service of Krishna.

Deriving spiritual lessons from past experiences

Someone Krishna saved to speak on the puts on your direct and last meat of Pass and Krishna saved it to the same now. Krishna saved to his And in a similar spirit we can engage the 1st of January or 31st of December in the service of Krishna.

In the Padma Purāṇa it is said that the essence of all the rules and regulations is to always remember Krishna and never to forget Him.

Smartavyaḥ satataṁ viṣṇur vismārtavyo na jātucit. So whatever helps us to remember about Krishna is devotional service.

So usually when uh the last year comes to an end and the new year starts, people they're taking some lessons from the past year and trying to make some new year resolutions what they will do in the new year, how the new year will become different from the past year.

Sarve vidhi-niṣedhāḥ syur etayor eva kiṅkarāḥ. Hare Vashirana, Kaliya Bibhu, and Ami His Bhikkhu And

in exactly a similar way we as devotees have to also derive important lessons from the past and try to see how the future will be different from the past.

If we only live according to our karma, if we only uh work out our karmic program which is there, then there is nothing really new happening in our life.

We repeat the same things, we repeat the same mistakes, we follow our natural tendencies, and therefore after some time the life of people becomes very tedious, it becomes very routine. The same thing is happening again and again and again.

There is no new feelings in our heart, there is no new understanding or realization in our head, there is no new relationship which are developing on a deeper level. Everything is the same, stale.

I don't know what people do here in India on a New Year Eve, but in Russia they all drink some champagne or whatever, some wine. And they wish each other to have a new happiness.

So Bhartadali Yaviti Pashadakari Martana Rashadhali Vishwagina Matipa And they all know that there will be no new happiness. They still nevertheless they wish each other that new happiness will come to your life.

But the amazing power of devotional service is that it really can change our heart, make it new. So Adele. It really can bring us new feelings, new relationship, and really new happiness.

The whole writings of Srila Rupa Goswami, like Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu or Ujjvala-nīlamaṇi is describing this amazing variegated spiritual emotions which can become our property.

We all you know we speak all these lofty words bhāva premā extasy you know but it can become the reality of our heart, or how the prayer on the battlefield. And this is what we have to resolve on this new year's eve.

Recognizing the instability of material life

The last year, the year which is past the year two thousand what was it? twenty, yes. Because after some time you become a little oblivious of what's going on. So the last year 2020 was a very interesting

So I was saying, people share it proved with uh uh very much how you say very vividly proved that this whole material civilization is very very unstable.

This whole world before that you know so yeah it it it seemed to be so stable and so strong and so solid this whole economical system, everything and then a little tiny virus came and everything just was upside down.

So the main lesson of the past year is that we should not try to take shelter in something which doesn't really give shelter. Unfortunately, we have this tendency to take shelter of something which is not

worthy of being taken shelter of. Now, śaraṇāgati—āha, phala-hētu śaraṇāgati—once

there was a very nice interesting story of Śrīla Prabhupāda. He was walking with Harivilāsa Prabhu, his disciple. And Harivilāsa Prabhu asked him a very common and simple question.

And Prabhupāda gave a very uncommon and interesting answer to this simple question. Harivilāsa Prabhu asked, Prabhupāda, what is humility? And we probably heard these definitions of humility thousands of times.

What is humility? Be humble like a—more humble like grass, or the tree, whatever it is. The blade of the grass, and you know, more tolerant than the tree, and you know, be humble, be humble. But what is humility?

Prabhupada gave a very amazing and brilliant answer to this question.

He said humility is when you don't take shelter in anything else, you don't take shelter in your wealth, you don't take shelter in the doctors, you don't take shelter in the weapons which which you may have, you don't take shelter uh in in the government, you don't take shelter in the economic system, don't take shelter in anything else, you only take exclusive shelter of Lord Krishna.

That's humility. We really have to think deeply what it means. What Prabhupada implies by this answer.

He implies that if we think that doctors will give us protection, that the government will give us protection, that our relatives will give us protection, our wife will give us protection, our children will give us protection, our money will give us protection, new vaccine will give us protection from the virus.

We are proud. And because we do not want to surrender exclusively to the Lord, we have we only want to surrender partially to all these partial manifestations of the Lord.

The underlying mentality behind this tendency to take shelter of all these little things in this material world is the pride because we do not want to surrender our independence.

this attempt, futility of trying to take shelter of something which this attempts, futility of trying to take shelter of something which doesn't give you shelter.

So the particular situation, the only way to escape from the side, And this little virus showed that you know this material world is a very unstable place. Duḥkhālayam aśāśvatam.

And uh it's only beginning because people you know by uh building this artificial civilization, people are trying to counteract this essential nature of material world.

They want to say that this is a happy place and this is the permanent place.

But it's it's a very essential and very soberant lesson of the last war, or the last year which is past, is that we shouldn't try to take shelter of something which doesn't give us shelter.

Now people think that now this vaccine will come and everything will become the same as as it was before. It will never become the same. And um there will be difficult times.

I don't want to make bad predictions, but the time will be tough. we have to be prepared. And how to be prepared? The only way to be prepared for the difficult times is to take exclusive shelter of Krishna.

So, mām ekam śaraṇaṁ vraja, produce Siddhartha. Just to feel that Krishna is there to protect me. Krishna, He is ready to give us protection, but He is waiting when we are ready to accept His protection.

When we wholeheartedly open our heart to accept his protection. So that's the most important lesson of the past year Actually, that's the most important lesson of uh any year we have to become serious.

We have become one year closer to death. And at the moment of death, only our ability to surrender exclusively to Krishna will help us, nothing else will help us.

At the moment of this, neither doctors, nor vaccine, no your money, no your family members, know your bank balance, no policemen, no weapons which you have will help you.

Making meaningful spiritual resolutions

Only if you develop genuine humility now you will be able to pass this test, which is a very difficult test. So if this is the lesson of our past year, then the new year resolution should follow this lesson.

So you want the part now, you know, resolution. You know, all the people they usually take New Year resolution on the new year the first of January, the day of first of January, but then they forget about this.

Never look in the list of the resolutions. But devotees, we as devotees, we should really try to take it seriously. This, this reminding which is being given to us, try to take it seriously.

So I remember you know what I'm doing to the that everything is very unstable and can be finished anytime. So you want to get a tool. So in the new year we should live in such a way that we are prepared to be with Krishna.

So you know, Eggajuna Sajandary, Nau Krishna Natra, Krishna Radha, Sami Kradhi is dragva. He is waiting for us. He really waits when we take him seriously. And uh it's up to us whether we do it or not.

But if we do it, then the real change can take place within our heart. When the people as traditionally being done on this day wish each other new happiness. You know, we as devotees can really realize this wish.

Samarita Vaswarth Subashivati Bhaktara Mantra is Subhana Shiva Sila Prabhupada

once said that spiritual life is not static, it is ecstatic. So how many of the data you'll put on the Given Right. So it basically means that uh every second,

like Yamunachari, he is praying that from the day when I started experiencing the newer and newer rasas which are there in your lotus feet. I lost any interest in this material life.

Krishna Bhakti is a very amazing thing. It can become newer and newer experience every day.

Experiencing the ever-fresh nature of chanting

So Krishna Bhakti and Buddha Mlu Pakriya Shana was also like so this is what uh we should resolve. I want this year to become really new year for me. So now you're not doing that.

For ordinary people there is actually no difference between the old year and the new year. It is the same. Old year they would go to the job and the new year they will also do the same thing.

But for us as devotees, if we understand this eternally newer and newer nature of Krishna, and we start chanting his holy name with this understanding every day will become new.

So now Bare Krishna Bhapparu, Krishna, Pratishnah Basava Sampur Prabhupada, Virpuna, Krishna Nama Jac Why do we chant Hare Krishna again and again and again?

Outside people when they hear this, they think you, know, don't they have some other song?

But that the lying principle is that when you chant Krishna, you know, you chant Krishna and then you again repeat Krishna and it's new Krishna. It's not the same Krishna.

Inujwalani Lamani Sila Rupa Gaswami gives a very beautiful verse describing this amazing quality of highest emotions of love. Srimathi Ratharani speaks this verse addressing her Saki, Lalita Sakhi, her closest friend.

Shrimati Ratharani says to Larita Saki, who is this boy? I've never seen this boy. Please tell me, who is this amazing, beautiful boy who is standing in front of me?

So replies to her, what's wrong with you? You are just on his lap. And you say that you've never seen him before. So Legita Sikh. Krishna, maybe what the Ramanda gives you.

But it's not madness, it's the highest emotional state of love which makes Krishna new.

Shrimati Radharani sees Krishna and she says, I've never seen him before. Krishna Matharani Kantana Krishna it's my own personal experience. Little bit I mean tiny tiny speck of this experience every one of us has.

When I started, just started chanting Hare Krishna, I didn't believe in God, I didn't believe in anything. I just, you know, I thought, let me try it.

Somebody told me just do it, it will be good for you, and I thought, well, okay, let me try it. And uh when I'll become bored, I'll stop it.

See I don't know um the most problems. Now forty years later I'm still doing it, to be honest. So this is how I I try it.

So that's the point, if you really do it in a proper way, uh it's newer and newer and newer every moment. And it never becomes tedious, it's never become really boring if if you do it properly.

And you know, as Prabhupada used to say that Krishna consciousness is ever fresh, like Krishna himself. He is ever fresh. Krishna consciousness is ever fresh.

So Prabhupāda, Krishna, Ravi, protection of Hare Krishna kind of thing. So that's the real meaning of the new year. New means new. The quality should be different, not the same. So that's our resolution for the new year.

Let this new year become really new year.

Distinguishing between soul and matter

So you solution is coming in. You know the matter is very static by nature. Matter is very inert. It doesn't have really the dynamic within.

So even though I think you have the ātmā, the soul is called ātmā because ātmā, the word ātmā in Sanskrit is coming from the uh dhātu ā, which means to move. So ātmā ki, ātmā a dhātu and the ātu, ātmā, the soul or consciousness is a dynamic principle.

Matter is static. The soul is dynamic. So, you know, when motivation was too chill, But when the soul identifies with the matter, uh it becomes also static, it becomes same like matter. so, to be, or whatever.

When we realize our nature as the soul, we really realize this ever-expanding dynamic nature of the spirit.

So now it's an... But if we follow the opposite path, if we realize or identify with the matter, the only destination of somebody who identifies with the matter is destruction, is actually the diminishing of everything, is dwindling.

So nashyati. If you follow the path of the soul, you will be flourishing. If you follow the path of the matter, you will be dwindling. And it's up to us to choose between these two alternatives.

Do we want to flourish or do we want to dwindle? Do we want to be destroyed or do we want to obtain the eternal nature or eternal love? So Prabhupada, he used to say bhakti is very simple. It is very simple.

But it's very sublime also. Always think about Krishna. Krishna's creates the image. This is the essence of the whole Vedic literature. Just two words. Manmana. Krishna says, man-manā.

This is the essence of the whole Vedas, Two words. Think about me. Kṛṣṇa says, just remember about me and chant my holy name. Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, Hare Hare.

So if we really want to make the new year resolution, we have to resolve that I want to live as the soul. I don't want to live as a piece of matter.

And if I live as a piece of matter I will experience all these negative emotions, stress, anger, envy, greed, all these emotions will be coming naturally to my heart.

Yeah, this is the śarīra-bhāva, the natural feelings which come when we identify with the body. So you know, śarīra-bhāva and the... But if I identify with the soul, the completely opposite feelings will come.

The natural humility will come within our heart. And together with the humility, the gratitude will come to our heart. And together with gratitude, so many other feelings will also come to our heart.

Which will make us happy. It starts with the very simple things. Gratitude, the sense of duty, this is the beginning of bhakti. But bhakti takes us from these very simple but nice things to very very sublime things.

All these emotions, prema, sneha, and māna and rāga and anurāga, bhāva, anubhāva, all these emotions are described there in Vedic literature and the literatures of all Goswami, and they are all our inheritance.

Śrīla Prabhupāda gave it to us. This is our right to inherit all these things, all these beautiful emotions of love. So this is what we should resolve.

I don't want to remain as a lustful angry, greedy, envious creature of this world.

I'm gone to abroad, I want to relate to this world and to the people of this world with gratitude, with graciousness, with mercy, and ultimately develop all these elevated feelings or emotions of love.

By chanting the holy names. Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Rāma. Hare Krishna. Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare. Yeah, I guess that's enough. Thank you very much. Śrīla Prabhupāda-kī jaya!

Addressing physical health through spiritual practice

Would you like to ask the question? Yeah, but there's an issue. How are you showing it? How are you? for the class.

My question was like, we are telling, uh, we are preparing about the chanting of Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra, but uh when we are preaching to the materialistic people, uh, the main question which comes is what about their uh when they're having some physical problems, like especially that any body ailments, so they ask this uh like, if we chant, so they uh leave that uh some health, health?

Should we chant Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra in difficult health situations, right? That's the question. Will it help?

In Vedic culture we have a special branch of Vedic knowledge which is called Ayurveda, which is specifically given to those people who are following the spiritual path to maintain their health.

And in many, many dharma-śāstras and other śāstras, it's very exactly described what you should do and should not do to maintain your healthy conditions.

Actually most of the regulations of the Shastras are of this nature. They actually the rules which help you to maintain the healthy body. So many details are there in the shastra.

And if you follow it not even all of them but at least some of them you will remain relatively healthy as much as it is possi Like

For example, if you fast on Ekadasi day completely, it has also, uh, besides the benefit of purifying your mind and purifying your heart, it also has uh a very significant health benefit because all the toxins will be digested, you know, you just fast for 32 hours or how many hours are there, you know, hmm and that's very healthy.

So what people do nowadays, they violate all the—they break all the rules of the shastras, they don't follow it and then they become sick as a natural consequence of their unregulated life, uh, they started praying Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, Hare Hare.

Krishna is really not for the health. Krishna may help you, but he really already took care of it because he gave all the rules which you should follow.

And uh you know for such people you should say that you know you should follow so many rules and that will be very beneficial for your health. You you will not have all these problems if you do it.

You know, if they pray to God, please give me help, help in this desperate condition, it may work. Krishna is very generous and he may do it. But really, our relationship with God is not so cheap. It's not for this.

Because when you are healthy, you lead the sinful life and you break all the principles. And because you live the sinful life, uh you become unhealthy and then you try and you start praying to God.

So why not live healthy life from the beginning and pray to God without waiting when you become sick. And what's that is the other question?

Balancing worldly duties with spiritual surrender

It's still one person. You mentioned Śrīla Prabhupāda, Śrīla Prabhupāda for humility and we say that we should not take shelter of government or the job or family.

We should take exclusive shelter of—it doesn't mean that you should neglect all these things, but internally you should understand that it's only Krishna who gives you ultimate protection.

Everything else is also necessary, but it doesn't mean that you neglect this. Okay. So how do I understand because as uh citizen of the country or as a we have our responsibilities at the No no. Responsibility is there.

It's i it doesn't say that you don't have to fulfil your responsibilities. It's not about this.

It's about, uh, you know, actually, what Prabhupāda is saying, Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī puts it in Bhakti-sandarbha as the precondition to śaraṇāgati, precondition of śaraṇāgati before you will be able to surrender is ananya-gatitva.

It means that you internally understand that there is no other—you don't have other gati. You don't have anything else which can give you protection.

So internally you understand that ultimate protection is coming through Krishna. And you surrender to Krishna. But at the same time you do your duties, you live your normal life, you you do responsible life as a gṛhastha.

But internally you understand, only Krishna gives you, ultimately only Krishna gives you shelter. So that's it. Duties you should follow, definitely.

You have your children, you have a wife, you should have a job, you should do this.

No doubt that I'm not saying just give it up and you know become a brahmacārī in the South Bangalore Temple. I'm not trying to unsettle these things. But internally we have to understand who will give me protection.

Krishna can give me protection through all these things, but I have to understand that this

is—it's like also Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī, he quotes Dharma-uttara Purāṇa, one of the Purāṇas, quotes a story that once Mahārāja Ambarīṣa started severe austerities to please the Lord, Lord Vishnu.

And he was doing tapasya-vrata for a long time sitting in one place, you know, engaging in austerities on the bank of Yamuna River. And when the last day of his Vrata came, Krishna decided

to test him, and he took the form of Lord Indra.

And he came to Mahārāja Ambarīṣa, and this Vishnu, in the form of Lord Indra, said to Ambarīṣa, "Oh, I am very happy with your austerity and with your vrata. Please ask me some boon."

And Mahārāja Ambarīṣa, he became very indignant. He became very really, you know, he said, "No, no, I don't want any boon from you, you know. Who do you think you are?

You know, you came here with the Airāvata, and you know the Airāvata, just get out of here. I'm not, you know, I'm very respectful to you, but I'm not asking. I'm not going to take shelter from you."

So, and Indra became—superficially, because it's Lord Krishna himself, Lord Krishna himself—he became very indignant, he became very angry.

So he took his vajra and he said, "You know, how dare you reject my boons?" and he threatened Mahārāja Ambarīṣa. But Maharajan Barish said, you know, I'm not afraid of your Vajra and your elephant is of no consequences to me.

And in this moment of time, Lord Indra became Lord Vishnu and Airavata became Garuda, and Lord Vishnu said, Oh, I'm very happy with you. Ask a boon from me.

So the idea is that you know he didn't want to ask a boon from him. In a similar way, we're only seeking blessings of Krishna.

We're respectful to everyone else, we are doing our duties, but internally we understand that there is one supreme shelter and one supreme power. And this is called humility.

Whereas if, you0, we become happy, yeah, yeah, right, Indra, okay, very good.

Using intelligence during difficult times

You know, give me your boons, I have a list of what I need. So that's maybe not so chaste. In difficult situation, how do we react? Keep waiting for the so-called good days or take all the sufferings as it is.

No, the, you know, we have intelligence, God-given intelligence. And one of the, you know, once, uh, there was an interesting story in Prabhupada's life.

In one temple in America, there was a saṅkīrtana leader who was very transcendental. And whatever would happen, he would say, oh Krishna wanted this to happen.

You know, if they go to saṅkīrtana in a van and, uh, there was no petrol, he said, oh, Krishna didn't want us to go to saṅkīrtana, so we should sit in this van and read Śrīla Prabhupāda's books, no problem. So whatever would happen, you know, he would say, you know, I'm surrendered, so Krishna wants it this way.

And the devotees, they kind of developed some doubts whether this philosophy is really practical or not.

So they wrote a letter to Śrīla Prabhupāda with a loaded question: dear Śrīla Prabhupāda, please explain to us what does it mean to be surrendered to Krishna. And Śrīla Prabhupāda saw through the whole situation.

He didn't know the details, but his answer was very important. He said, to surrender to Krishna means to use God-given intelligence.

God gave you intelligence and, you know, if you don't use your intelligence and say you're surrendered to God, you're bogus.

So, uh, it's basically, you know, we have to use our intelligence and if the difficult situation is there, we have the intelligence. And intelligence tells us, you know, what we should do, what means we should adapt. But at the same time, you know, internally we should also say, Krishna,

you know, I'm surrendered to you. I'm, I'm gratefully accepting what you send to me. But I'm using my intelligence and I'm fighting with this bad situation.

It's not that, you know, okay, yeah, yeah, Krishna wants it. No, I have intelligence. Intelligence tells me this is what you should do, this is what you should adopt. That's fine. That we should do.

But at the same time, internally, we should understand that you know we might try so many things, but it may not work. We should be internally, we should be ready to accept what Krishna sends to us.

But externally we, you know, do whatever is necessary in this situation, do the needful. So, but internally we always remain grateful.

What happens usually: the difficult situation comes and internally you start revolting against this situation, not externally, internally. I hate it, I don't like it, this is not right. You know how it is possible?

I'm a devotee. How Krishna dares to do this to me? I'm a devotee, I surrender to him. I'm chanting his holy name. Why does he do this to me? This is the talk of the surrendered soul.

And you spend so much of your energy, uh, internally into this fighting with this situation. Yeah, I recently got a letter and somebody writes to me, you know, that this is

I cannot chant this Hare Krishna mantra. And he or she explains to me the whole situation, and, uh, it's very clear that why he or she cannot chant Hare Krishna mantra. Because she just revolts against God. Or he.

You know, because he he or she doesn't like the situation where he is in. I don't like it. This is bad. This is not proper. And his whole energy is uselessly wasted into this internal you know anger. He cannot do anything.

He cannot change anything. So instead of, you know, prayerfully saying to the Lord, you know, okay, I accept what you send to me. And I'll try to do to improve with something, but whatever I can. I cannot do everything.

If we are with a grateful heart to do it, even the external situation may change. But what happens if you do otherwise you just waste your energy. You cannot do, you cannot concentrate your mind.

You always will think this is bad, this is not right, this is very bad, how can it happen to me? And you will just completely waste your energy into all these useless thoughts.

You know, whereas if if you accept this situation internally, say thank you very much, I will try to improve it, but ultimately I surrender and I understand that there is something I have done in the past, whether in this life or in the previous life, which is coming to me in the form of this difficult situation,

then even the external situation will change. Because Krishna waits when we accept this.

And then when external situation changes, you know also, it may not change, but it there is a good chance that it will change to the better. It will become better. It's like you know if you are in a river, you know,

and this is very strong pravaha, the very strong flow of the river. You know, you you you just have to go with the flow. But at the same time try to see how to get to the bank of the river. Okay. It's it's late enough.

It's not a good stream is the technology early. But then they are back-to-back programs.

We had a sans class from 5 to 6 and he had a class with Mahatma Guru online from 6:30 to 8:15 and they just finished and program. Maharaja's class has been given so you too much help at all.

So we very heartily gratefully thank you very much for the association and given us a Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
