Observing the occasion of Gaura Purnima
Namaḥ vadāya kṛṣṇa-premā-pradāya te, kṛṣṇāya kṛṣṇa-caitanya-nāmne. So I'm very happy to speak in front of all of you on this occasion of Sri Gaur Purneema.
I will chant one verse and a little purport by Śrīla Prabhupāda from Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta and then speak a little bit about this. I will say one shloka, and then the purport or a translation to be put in.
Nagara-nāgarī-brāhme kīrtana kariyā, vāsila tribhuvana prema-bhakti diyā. Bhakti Dia, Bibana Briamatiya Nogare na gore brahme kirtana koriya, Basilatribana, Prema Bhakti Dia, No
gore na gare brahme kirtana koriya, Basai bhāsāila tribhuvana prema-bhakti diyā Prema Bhaktiya This is the verse number thirty from the thirteenth chapter of Ādi-līlā, Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta.
The Sankirtana movement went on from one part of the town to another as the Lord wandered everywhere performing kirtana. In this way he inundated the whole world by distributing love of Godhead. 32, 13th chapter.
Ādi-līlā, 13th chapter, 32nd verse. Second chapter. Second chapter, 32 verse. No. 13th chapter. One thirteen thirty two. Yes.
So saṅkīrtana movement here, Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura says the same thing. same thing. In this way he inundated the whole world by distributing love of God.
One may raise a question how all three worlds became anand inundated with love of Krishna since Chaitanya Mahaprabhu performed Kirtana only in the Navadvip area?
The answer is that Lord Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is Krishna himself. The entire cosmic manifestation results from the Lord's first setting it in motion.
Similarly, since the Sankirtana movement was first set in motion five hundred years ago by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's desire
that its spread or one second set in motion 500 by Sichitany Mahaprabhu's desire that it spread all over the universe.
The Krishna consciousness movement in continuity of that same motion is now spreading all over the world and in this way it will gradually spread all over the universe.
Motion made Alata, Peleusko Start Kyata, who says same motion made a viewage but Raja. Parisitara, Modhira dire, Pure Vishwamet Pelega.
With the spread of the Krishna consciousness movement, everyone will merge in an ocean of love of Krishna.

in this verse, Krishna Daska Viraj Gaswamy says that while wandering in Navadvi, going from one village to another village and performing Sankirtana Sri Chaitanya Prabhu Tribhuvana Prema Bhakti Dhya gave
Prema Bhakti to the whole three worlds Otherwise you can also take mic and I will just speak like this. No no marathon is important.
So one may ask, is it exaggeration? She Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is wandering from a couple of villages, and then we say whole three walls are inundated for the love of God.
Analogy of divine direction and management
And Śrīla Prabhupāda very beautifully explains what does it mean? How it is not exaggeration.
So Śrīla Prabhupāda said, uh, it's like the Īśvara God is creating this world. He is not creating each and every detail of this world. He is not coming to build this building and that building to create this world. He just gives initial push. He just sets the whole thing into motion. And everything else goes on automatically because of the energy of his initial motion, initial push.
It's only a bad manager who is trying to do everything himself. But the good manager, he is not doing anything, he is just, you know, giving a little push and everything goes on automatically.
I remember, that's relevant to people of Ahmedabad, but I once came to Akshardham in Delhi when it was just in the process of construction.
This huge Akshardham in Delhi was being constructed by Swaminarayan people. And I came before it was constructed.
Mahārāja, Akṣardhām Mandir-me gayā, mahārāja, yes. And when I came, you know, there were so many people, thousands of people, some, you know, carvers were chiselling, uh, marble, you know, they were building something, you know, thousands of people swarming, and then I came to the Swamiji who is in charge of the whole construction.
And he is sitting in his office, nobody is there, his desk is completely empty and he's just like, you know, going like this, very relaxed. So I immediately realized he's a good manager.
So the good manager is not doing everything himself.
Early life and pastimes of Lord Chaitanya
He just pushes it and everything goes on automatically on its own. Krishna is the best manager. He doesn't need to do anything, he just desires something and everything takes place automatically.
Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu came to this world 500 years ago in the year of, uh, 1486, uh, on the 18th of February— pardon, 14th of February, 1486 is Ḍāḍālī Pūrṇimā rātri. And from the very moment of his descent to this world, he induced people
to chant Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare. Hare Krishna Mahā-mantra yāvat-kāle ca-luhukā-diyā. When he descended to this world, there was a lunar eclipse, and because everyone is afraid of this bad effects of lunar eclipse, all the people
in Navadvīpa, they went to Ganges and stuff, and they were chanting Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare Hare. Usually people don't remember about God, but when there is something bad coming, then they immediately remember Hare Krishna.
Generally log Hare Krishna Mahā-mantra ko yād karte, par aisi situation hoti hai, to Hare Krishna Mahā-mantra ko yād karte.
So therefore Chaitanya Mahaprabhu appeared in uh seemingly inauspicious moment because lunar eclipse is not a very auspicious moment. But he made this inauspicious moment, turn this inauspicious moment into auspicious
moment because everyone was chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa Mahā-mantra. Guriko Shuk Gurima Rivasik Kadiya Kiki Rune Hare Kisiko Harakish Mahamantra Javkar.
And the same way he continues to do this, he's turning very inuspicious time of Kali Yuga which we are in.
It's very inuspicious time, but he's turning this into very auspicious and very good time because he induces everyone to chant Hare Krishna.
So from the very first moment of his appearance, he already revealed his mission. His mission is to induce everyone to chant the holy name of the Lord.
Mahajatana Mahaprabhu Avil Bhavajo Laksha, Pusto Matayat, Pista Ayur Bhav, Kesamay Harakishna Mahamadraka Jabhana. So so many people chant different things to me. But we chant Hare Krishna.
So uh and when S Chaitanya Mabrabhu was just a little baby, he continued doing the same thing. You know, he continued uh inducing As a little baby, he would start crying and he when he was crying he couldn't stop.
And we all know when the little baby is crying, it's it's very agitating, especially for for the father. And everyone is trying to pacify little baby. Please don't cry, you know, ju ju.
But he wouldn't stop, whatever you do, whatever people would do. He wouldn't stop, he would cry more and more and more.
And when at one point ladies started clapping their hands and chanting Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare.
all of a sudden this little Nimai, how he was called, would stop crying. So uh very soon all the ladies in household they knew how to pacify little baby.
There is both there was only one upai, one only one way to pacify the baby is to chant the holy name to him.
And therefore his name, even though his name was Viswambar, Nilambar Chakravati, his grandfather gave him the name Viswambar, and Tamader, his mother gave him the name of Nimai, he very soon was known as Gorhari.
The this name was given to the household ladies, to the girls who were there.
It's like this, you know, when uh when Hare Krishna devotees from Miskan go outside and they do Hare Nam Sankirtan. You know the people say here Krishna, Krishna, Krishna goes.
They say Hare Krishna devotees the Bharjae, Sankirtan, Karteta L So because this little Nimai, he was so fond of this name Hari, so they called him Hari Hari Hari.
And because he was not he was not black, because he was uh he was very bright and uh yellow so he was called Gorhari. And then when he became little older and he went to school, he
started teaching his students by Sanskrit grammar. And when he was teaching Sanskrit grammar, how he would teach Sanskrit grammar, he again was taking the holy names of the Lord and was teaching Sanskrit grammar.
Somebody asked him what is dhatu? What is dhatu according to the vyakarana? Vyakarana can share. And he would say dhatu means moolam, moola means Ishvara, and he would start explaining in this way. What is Upasarga?
What is Pratyaya? And he would always explain, no Pasarga is Krishna, Pratyaya is Krishna, everything is Krishna.
Because Krishna himself says in Bhagavad Gita, vedais ca sarvair aham eva vedyaḥ, vedānta-kṛd veda-vid eva cāham.
Krishna himself says that the whole essence of the Vedas, the Vedas, Vedas, the purpose of the Vedas is to know me, nothing else. There is nothing else in the Vedas.
Krishna bhavan svayam Bhagavad-gītā mahātmyātmī, vedo ka sarjohe, o muja janda he, aur kiṣh Veda, Vedoma, aur kuṭvini.
Initiation and the power of the holy name
And Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, when he was an adhyāpaka, when he was a teacher in the Tola of Gaṅgā Das, he was teaching the same way. But he revealed his mission to the full scale when he uh When
He got initiation from Ishwarapuri. Ishwarapuri, as he himself explained, gave him this Hare Krishna mantra.
Jab unhone diksha li Sripuri se, to unhone isvakiya pura viksanta hota hai, de kar ke Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare
Rama Rama Rama. And Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu explains that he started chanting this Hare Krishna Mahamantra and all of a sudden he started dancing.
He told to Ishwarapuri when he came next day after this experience. He said, please explain to me what happened. I'm changing this Hare Krishna mantra and uh tears are flowing and uh all of a sudden I'm dancing like a madman. What's going on?
And he said, it's actually not me who is dancing, it's the Holy Name who is dancing through me.
It's a different different experience when we, you know, sometimes we feel like dancing and sometimes you know we don't feel like dancing when the kirtan is going on. You know, and because everyone is dancing we also try to do something like this.
But in case of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, he said I I I cannot stop, it's just it's Hare Krishna mantra is dancing through me.
Hare Krishna mantra is just dancing on my tongue and because it's dancing on my tongue the holy name is dancing on my tongue. I am also following the dance of the holy name.
Mahamantra mira jihbake and first nitekarae, mira ju sharina, who be used to and got follow. And Ishwarapuri said, my dear child, you are not mad. You are, you experiencing the real holy name.
When we chant we don't experience it. best we experience the shadow of the holy name, the Namabhas. And therefore we don't have the same sort of experience as Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu had.
Sometimes of course we do experience some some sort of ecstasy when we chant the holy name.
There was one story in my own life that was uh Janmashtamy celebration in uh uh Moscow. And so many people came, thousands of people came during the festival and they were, you know, feasting. then you know the the main arti is at midnight at twelve o'clock.
And uh by twelve o'clock there was not so many people. There were maybe one thousand people or maybe few hundred people left; everyone else already left the premises of the temple.
And when we started the saṅkīrtana, one very good kīrtana leader started kīrtana. And it was such an amazing kīrtana, you know, very, very amazing, very deep kirtan was going on.
So at that time I was I was going through the crowd and I was looking at people and some people were crying, some people were just chanting, completely absorbed in the holy names.
I was very happy going, you know, looking at people what's going on.
And uh at that time one young boy uh you know caught me from behind and asked me, can I ask you one question? And he said, and I said, yes, of course, please ask your question.
And he said, you know, I'm for the first time in your temple. I've never been here. This is the first time I came and this is the first time when I chant this Hare Krishna, you know.
But can you please explain to me why I'm always crying when I chant Hare Krishna? And I said, no, everything is okay with you, something is wrong with me because I am not crying.
So in the same way, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, when he told Īśvara Purī, Īśvara Purī said to him, you know, nothing is wrong with you, you're right. You're all right.
So when Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu came back, he started, as we know, this saṅkīrtana movement, for one year it was going on in Śrīvāsāṅgana under the locked
Internal and external reasons for descent
doors and then he went out with all his people to the streets of Navadvīpa.
But as Śrīla Prabhupāda explains in this purport, his real purpose was not only to give the holy name to the citizens of Navadvīpa, but to give the holy name to the whole world.
And not only to give the holy name to the whole world, but to also give the Krishna prema to the whole world. And Hare Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, Hare Hare, Hare Rāma, Rāma, Rāma, Hare Hare.
So that's uh that's the real purpose because he wanted to share this happiness which was there in his heart.
When we experience this very strong happiness within our heart, we really want to share this happiness with everyone. When we experience little happiness, we are not very eager to share this little happiness with others.
But if the happiness is too much, we want just to embrace everyone and to give to to let them experience the same thing as we are
Bahir-jaga, it is said that there are two main purposes why Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu came to this world. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, one is internal purpose and one is external purpose.
But internal purpose and external purpose they are very much connected with each other. The main purpose is internal.
His internal purpose was to experience the love of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī, which she feels when she meets Krishna. Or which she experienced when she is in separation with Krishna.
And his external purpose is to give harināma-saṅkīrtana and rāgānugā-bhakti to the whole world. But the external purpose is only possible when the internal purpose is fulfilled.
You can only give to somebody something if you have it. You cannot give something which you don't have. Sometimes devotees of ISKCON they're very eager to spread Krishna consciousness.
But we can only spread Krishna consciousness if we have Krishna consciousness.
We cannot spread it otherwise. So in the same way, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was spreading love of God or this not even love of God but the happiness of the love of God because he experienced this happiness himself.
He had so much love and so much happiness and so much uh so much ananda that the whole world could be inundated by this ananda.
But, uh, and and therefore Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī says that he was distributing love of Godhead all over the world.
But actually Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī means this process of inundating the whole world with Krishna consciousness is a gradual process as much as the creation of the world is the create gradual process.
There is no doubt that Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu can give love of Godhead to everyone because he has so much. There is no scarcity of love of Godhead in his heart.
His desire is also there, he wants us to get this love of God.
Transforming the heart through devotional service
But now it depends on us whether we want to get this love of God or not. To get love of God we have to really meditate on Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. It's a very scientific process.
Narada Muni explains in the seventh canto of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam that you basically become like what you are meditating upon.
If you meditate upon something you will gradually become like this, like the object of your meditation. And in the same way, if we meditate on Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, we'll become like him.
We'll never become exactly like him, but we become almost like him. Uritara to unkitara na chakra, but what about unkitara bansaak? It really depends on the quality of our uh meditation.
If our meditation is very tīvra, is very dṛḍha, then we look almost like him.
If we just, you know, little bit meditate on Caitanya Mahāprabhu, it's good, you know. If we come for, you know, thirty seconds in front of Gaura-Nitai and say Hare Bol, I'm here no problem, it's okay, no problem.
But um if we really meditate on the teachings of Lord Chaitanya,
explained in Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta and His mission, and if we serve Him, because the service is the most intense way of meditating on somebody, then the feelings which he has will come to our heart.
It's a question of establishing the connection between us and Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. The stronger the connection, the easier uh the process of our internal
transformation so that we will be able to experience the same thing which... And the strongest connection can be established between two human beings by the way of service.
Like why parents are so attached to children and children are not so attached to parents. Because parents serve the children and children usually don't serve the parents.
And therefore the connection between the the parents and the children are so strong. In the same way, if we try to serve Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, our connection becomes stronger and stronger and stronger.
This is the you know the method which uh uh Srila Prabhupada explained to all of us. I have one friend. He is, you know, he is an ācārya in Madhva-sampradāya, he's a teacher, very great pandit.
Mahārāja, in Madhva-sampradāya, his name is Suresh Acharya. And in his uh office where from he was teaching, he is teaching. There is a big picture of Srila Prabhupada.
And uh this is the photo of Srila Prabhupada in San Francisco.
Uh when Srila Prabhupada is chanting together with all his first followers, hippies in San Francisco. And he told me that when I come first to my office to do my service, I first offer pranam to my guru and then I offer pranam to Śrīla Prabhupāda. Śrīla Prabhupāda.
He said, why? Because Śrīla Prabhupāda... He said, I don't know anyone who served his Guru Maharaj as as Śrīla Prabhupāda. He says, you know, Śrīla Prabhupāda is not sevak, he's mahā-sevaka.
He asked me once, when you go to some city to preach, you know, do you expect that somebody will pick you up in the airport. I said yes of course. I said yes of course.
And he said when Śrīla Prabhupāda came to America, did he expect this? No.
Śrīla Prabhupāda explained to us what I want to say is that if we want to really experience this happiness of Hare Krishna Mahā-mantra or Krishna consciousness which Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu came to give we have to serve Śrī Caitanya Mahaprabhu and his mission.
When we do this harināma saṅkīrtana, we we do some service in the temple or we preach or we do some other things. You know, we at the same time we should meditate. This is my service to Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.
This is my service to my Guru Maharaj, to Śrīla Prabhupāda and to Caitanya Mahāprabhu ultimately.
The Marina computed cut the hair seva, cut the hair, pressure, cut the hair by She's got Sitten Cutter and the She made a Guru Mara Shira Prabhupa or Chatter Mahaprabhu Seva Kara.
The desire of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is very clear. He wants everyone to chant the Holy Name. And uh service means that we serve not other desires but the desires of somebody else.
We do uh which somebody else wants us to do. Service, sevā, doesn't mean that I do whatever I like and I call it service. Service doesn't mean that I do whatever I like to do and then I call it service. This is my service.
Somebody else wants to do with somebody whom I serve. So the desire of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is very clear. He wants to give the holy name to the whole world. That's his desire. That's his plan.
Not only to Navadvīpa, not only to West Bengal, not only to the whole Bharat, but to the whole world. And Śrīla Prabhupāda says not only to the whole world, to the whole universe. Surf naodi nahi Sir Pashim Bangal Vishwamage atina
Mahaprabhu Pacharpana Jada Shri Prabhupada the Hatha Kataki put a Brahman maja Mahapur Pracharka. I don't know how we're going to do this where we have rocket which is going to the space with Harinam Sankirtan.
But uh the desire of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is very clear. He wants everyone to become happy. But how you become happy if you forget God?
How you become happy if you only serve yourself and if you only think about yourself. There is no chance to become happy if we only think about ourselves.
Because when people think about themselves they can only get anxiety and uh and problems. Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu wants us to become happy and for that Śrīla Prabhupāda explained to us how we can become happy.
He gave this formula to us, the formula of happiness. You chant the holy name yourself. You give the holy name to others, to everyone else who is around you.
You think about Krishna all the time because changing the holy name means thinking about Krishna. And then for sure you will become happy. So that's the formula which Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu came to give.
Essential conditions for chanting the holy name
And there is one more secret to this formula, secret ingredient to this formula. Once Śrīla Prabhupāda's godbrother O. B. L. Kapoor asked uh uh asked Śrīla Prabhupāda when he was uh distributing his medicines.
He said he said can you give me some tonic which will make me strong. Śrīla Prabhupāda told me about the tonic. Śrīla Prabhupāda said no, I cannot give you the tonic, but I can give you something more than the this tonic.
The main tonic is Krishna friends, so this is what I can give. So uh Kapur says, how do I get it? He said I can give you the formula of this tonic Śrīla Prabhupāda he
said what is the formula of this tonic formula is that and Prabhupada answered krinada pisunicha taro Rati Sahishnuna Amanina ... ... So that's the formula of this Krishna Prema. Krishna Bhakti Prem praktipha formula.
Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu came to give the holy name, but he also explained us the method how we should chant the holy name.
And if we remember about him, meditate about him, and at the same time remember this instruction, the most important instruction about being humble as the blade of grass, tolerant as a tree, giving respect to everyone and not expecting respect to ourselves then for sure we become happy and everyone else around us will become happy as well.
And because Śrīla Prabhupāda knew this secret because Śrīla Prabhupāda knew perfectly well the desire of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and wanted to fulfill this desire. So many miracles happen.
There is one little story from the life of Śrīla Prabhupāda which I want to share with you. Maharaxri Sila Prabhupati Jivan say it kahani chair can the The story happened when Śrīla Prabhupāda was not a sannyāsī yet even. He was living in uh in Madhura, in uh in the temple of his god brother,
he was vānaprastha at that time, in the temple of uh Bhakti Prajñāna Keśava Mahārāja. In uh uh Mathurā there is this Keśavajī Gauḍīya Maṭha and Śrīla Prabhupāda was like, you know, vānaprastha living in this uh temple.
Śrīla Prabhupāda Māthurā Keśava Gauḍīya Maṭha me vānaprastha ruke the and once he went to a preaching program with one uh brahmacārī of the temple. And they came to the temple back to the temple quite late.
And they were late for prasādam so they came to to the place prasādam hall and they saw some cold sabji and cold rice and some cold chapatis there. And Prabhupada was putting on his plate, you know, some cold rice
and cold sabji uh cold chapatis. And at that time one family, some rich people family came to visit the temple.
And they looked in the room and they saw Srila Prabhupada and they were not really interested and they closed the door and went somewhere else. And Prabhupada at that time, this Brahmachari he is remembering.
At that time Prabhupada started chuckling. smiling, what I said. And uh and then Prabhupada said these people what did they see?
They see one old man who is taking cold sabji and dry chapatis and trying to eat this cold sabji and dry chapatis.
But they don't know the plans of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu which he is going to fulfill through this old man. So Śrīla Prabhupāda, he fulfilled this plan of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. He writes about this in this purport.
And we are very fortunate because we can also become the part of this grand plan of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu by the mercy of Śrīla Prabhupāda. And in this way we can become happy and everyone else will become happy. Otherwise people what they do?
They just fight with each other.
Oh, but now look at this is a kalyuga there. Yeah they just you know they they fight the husband and wife will fight in the family and then the countries will fight and there's some war here and there and everywhere.
So it's it's better if it spreads sankirtana movement than to... people will not have time for fighting. Because they have to chant sixteen rounds a day. So anyway, thank you very much.
