Early Hare Krishna movement in Russia
Okay, I will tell you a few more stories from uh Krishna consciousness movement in the beginning of days. Tami uh kuchupakam bulbho Krishna Bhavana Actually
for the first time I heard Harikrishna Maha Mantra in 1978 Mahamantra Shovan Kori I was living at the time in a hostel in Moscow state University with one friend in the same room Tamihat Moscow State University Hostel at Hakta Bung Shekhani Nar Akki Rume at Bantu Chilan.
This friend of mine was a very what shall I say, non-konventional person. He was he was doing things which were not exactly akoring to the customs of the time and society. And I was a very ordinary person.
I was not doing anything special, but I was very much kind of attracted by his unconventional nature. When we live in a society, there is always a pressure from the society to be the same as everyone else.
So Jakonekha Shamajavti Bashkorvan uh She Shamajir uh Victader Matun after neckas korish We always depend on the society, on the opinion of other people, and this social pressure is a very powerful instrument.
In Shimad Bhagavatam, it is explained that only persons who are completely renounced, they come to the stage of Nirapeksha Nirapekha and Dangoli Krishna
Havana Sharbata Babi Ni Maddahan Takon Shei Bekti Jatharta Havi Niira Pakha the Bharan so So when person becomes very renounced and he becomes nirapitka, he doesn't expect anything from others. He is totally independent.
Like this morning we were talking about Lord Nityānanda. He was completely not dependent on the opinion of others.
So, uh, this friend of mine, to a certain extent, to a small extent, he was manifesting this kind of quality. He was not really dependent on the opinion of others, and he could do things which usually people don't do.
And as I said, I was very ordinary, I was very common person and uh but I was still somehow rather I felt that there is something special in this friend.
What happened actually I only very uh few years later I only realized what exactly happened so I will tell you what happened with him.
Distributing Prabhupada books at Russian book fairs

In nineteen seventy-seven, uh, before Śrīla Prabhupāda departed from this world, His Holiness Gopal Krishna Maharaj came to Russia. A Jagottakitar Aprakatila Karapur Bhatsur Shishima
Gopal Krishna Maharaj, yasyām, and Russia, the eagerness and desire of Śrīla Prabhupāda to give Kṛṣṇa consciousness to Russian people was so strong that many of his disciples would try also to help him preach in Russian.
Itṣā, ba ślāprahupāda jī prayāśa, śaṭī keha halapri śakarajana, ślāprahupādīra, śiśrāo, śarhaḍā, śakāna kuṭakurta caitanya. And Gopal Krishna Maharaj was one of those disciples.
So he came to Russia with uh Bhakti Vedanta book trust. There was an international book fair and Bhaktivedanta book trust bought some space in this book fair to give
people chance to somehow rather connect with the books of Śrīla Prabhupāda.
Ebhaṁ śekhanakti antur jātika bhimalahu echila, evaṁ śe mālai, bhuklivān the Buktrast akti jagani hsilan, ebhaṁ ślā prahu pāder, gonta śaṅghai, Rāśiān manujder Gopal
Krishna Maharaj and some other devotees, they came, they put a nice uh exhibition of Prabhupāda's books. Gopal Krishnahara jun, uh tarāgislan śekhāne vaṅśa prahu Pāder gronde, like you could shun pradarśinī tārakoraśilan.
And so many people came to this uh book fair and uh there was somewhat interested in books of Śrīla Prabhupāda. Most of the people at that time in Russia didn't know English at all.
But still you know they didn't know English, but they would look in the books of Śrīla Prabhupada and there were nice pictures in the books. So they were mostly interested in the pictures of the books.
And devotees would sometimes give these books for free. If somebody was very interested in the book, they would give it to him for free.
And they would prepare some sweet balls and offer and distribute some prasādam, some simple wonderful to all the people who would come to Bhaktivedanta Book Trust stall.
Transition to vegetarianism through spiritual books
Bhaktivedanta Book Trust stolen decision next to my śāstrā. So my friend, he somehow rather went to this book fair and he got Bhagavad-gītā As It Is from Bhaktivedanta Book Trust.
And he couldn't understand this Bhagavad-gītā, but he was always looking in the pictures of Bhagavad-gītā As It Is. But then he had said Bhagavad-gītā As It Is, bhakun is a bustan.
And somehow rather just by looking at the pictures of this book he became a vegetarian. As I said, he was always doing some strange things. And when he became vegetarian, I also decided to become vegetarian.
I didn't know why, but this is the power of Prabhupāda's books. I didn't even see book, I didn't read book, my friend, he only saw book, he didn't read
books, so just by seeing Prabhupāda's books, he influenced me to become a vegetarian. This is the power of Śrīla Prabhupāda. So, but that's not the end of the story.
Anyway, just by having this book, this friend of mine, he started, you know. He started associating with some people and finally he found some devotees, some first devotees in Moscow.
And he started disappearing from the hostel, from the room of the hostel in the evenings, and he would not be there, and I didn't know where he would go on be gone, and you know, and there was something mysterious going on, and I was very intrigued.
So at one point it so happened that I was in my And he didn't know that I was in the room. And all of a sudden I hear from the shower very loud sound. Tinihatsen Janasman kursen karabasta.
My friend is taking shower and he very loudly sings.
Tatini Hatshin I say Snankursen Fu and I Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hale Rama Rama Hare Hare, Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama, Rama, Hare Hare.
I'm sitting in this room and I'm listening. I can't understand what's going on. I you know Krishna Ramahare what is this? Krishna Ramahare Gikotri It didn't make any sense to me I was thinking that that's probably too much.
Then you don't think I've seen a paper. He must be really crazy. And it went on for some time, for half an hour or something, Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, half an hour non-stop.
And when he came out, uh I I didn't even dare to ask him what is this Hare Krishna Hari Rama. I I was a little hesitant because I knew that there was no rational explanation of this.
So I pretended that I didn't hear and he pretended that that he believed it. So that was my first experience of Hare Krishna Mantra. But the seed was growing in the heart, it's actually very interesting how it works.
When we first meet the holy name in whatever form it is, you know it still somehow or other make an impression within our heart.
Loss of interest in material scientific career
And now life starts changing. What happened with me we finished, we graduated from the university.
And because my friend was not very good and studies and he was, as I said, not conventional. He was sent somewhere far away in another city. And I stayed in Moscow and I continued my postgraduate studies.
I was doing my PhD degree in one scientific institution. uh shikha grahan bama PhD degree grahajanami ekti uhanik uhishan rasa shakanikosilam And from external point of view, everything was the same.
I was doing my careers, so to speak, scientific career, I was very successful in this, I was, you know, I I could consider myself a successful person in a sense.
But because I already heard Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra, I didn't know that my material life was already finished. Actually, that's a fact. As soon as you hear once harinām, your material life is finished.
No karma anymore, so you can't continue with the same way.
So I could feel that somehow or other I don't have energy to do this, I don't have interest, you know. Everything became very pale and stale and not interesting for me. And I couldn't understand what's happening.
Why did it happen? I was still m m you know doing this because there was some motion and uh everything was set in motion and I couldn't stop it abruptly. But you know somehow or other I I I I lost sense of what I am doing.
And some strange questions came to my mind. For what? What is the use? And very quickly the whole material life started changing in my case.
Disappointment after disappointment after disappointment, disillusionment after disillusionment. I lost interest in material relationship, I lost interest in material in the science, I lost interest in everything.
A scientific research, and the only question which I had in my mind, very strong question.
Later on, I read the same question in Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, praśna utthāne caitanya-caritāmṛta Śrīla Sanātana Gosvāmī as Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu asked, «And why am I suffering?» āmāre kena ḍukha bāche «Who I am and why I am suffering?» āmāre kena ḍukha deya kibā tāra kāraṇa
And uh you know, I'm hundred percent convinced, I mean, I want to say, hari-nāma-śravaṇa.
Facing existential crisis and spiritual questions
So at one point the whole crisis in my life became very acute and unbearable, and I couldn't find the answer to the questions. And I still remember very clearly this this day when when it
became really too much and I didn't know why I'm doing what I'm doing, who I am, why I'm suffering, what is this life all about? And I couldn't find the answers to these questions.
But Krishna is within the heart of every living entity. And if you have these questions, Krishna will answer these questions.
So after this very critical day, practically next day or uh you know in couple of days, uh something interesting happened with me.
All of a sudden my mysterious friend came from another city to Moscow. And he found me and he asked me, do you have any questions? I was not ready to reveal my questions to him at that time. I was a little shy.
But he said to me, if you want to know something interesting, let's go to one program. And we went to far away somewhere in some college hostel.
And the devotees arranged some very strange kind of preaching program because at that time, as I said, preaching was very very much undercover and on the ground. So they arranged a very strange program.
The topic, the lecture, the topic of the lecture which was there in this hostel was how to develop extrasensory powers.
And you know, I was not really into extrasensory powers, but I thought, okay, let's let's hear how to develop extrasensory powers.
And you know, the first devotees, they would come, and one lady came, and she said, now you know I'm doing some some very special practice, she said. And now I have the healing powers in my hands. Healing, yeah. Something which can cure the disease or take away pain.
And one student was there in the audience, and he said, Oh, I have a toothache, I have a toothache, can you take it away?
And he came there to the stage, and this lady, she put her hand on his cheek and another hand on his head, and started saying, Buddha Shrugullah, Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna. And then, you know, a few minutes like this, you were saying Hare Krishna, and this man, and then all of a sudden this man said, oh yeah, no. So
you know, this went on for some time with this program, this sort of, you know, miracles were there.
Ananda Shanti introduces chanting for answers
And then at the very end, you know, somebody very special came. I couldn't understand what's going on. It didn't make much sense to me and I really didn't take it so seriously.
But I, you know, I could feel that all the devotees who were doing this program, they expected somebody very important, somebody, you know, somebody, and Ananda Shanti came at the end.
And he started saying he was speaking something, his eyes were half closed, and he was speaking something in a very slow way, slow, slow, something preaching. I don't remember exactly what he was saying.
But at the end he said, if you want to fulfill all your desires and find the answer to all your questions, If you want to find the answer to all your questions,
you have to chant Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare. So you know, and then my friend asked, uh, looked at me and said, you you heard this?
If you want to find the answer to all your questions, chant Hare Krishna mantra. And he gave me little bits, you know there was only twenty seven bits little mala the tiny shata guti karakta dob malamakadillo and
And he gave me little Bhagavad-gītā, just only verses of Bhagavad-gītā was translation, and he said, read this book.
And I read this book. I read this little Bhagavad-gītā which he gave to me. And I was very, very impressed by this little book.
The feeling I — I didn't understand much of Bhagavad-gītā at that time, but the very uh clear feeling I got in my heart. The feeling which I got was this is truth and because this is truth, you have to change your life.
You cannot lead the same life because there's something, some truth which you discovered in this book is there. And I didn't know what to change in my life. I didn't know what exactly I have to change in my life.
And at that time when I was thinking what should I change in my life? And I was thinking, what should I change? What should I do now? How how I should what should be different now in my life?
At that time I remembered if you want to find the answers on your questions, please chant Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, Hare, Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama, Rama, Hare, Hare. So I said, let's try.
And then I remembered my friend under the shower how he was chanting. So
Testing the mantra in laboratory research
I was I started chanting and uh there was an interesting thing in my uh little experience at that time when I was chanting. Molecular biology. And I was doing some experiments in my laboratory.
And it was a very difficult sort of experience.
Very precisely you have to do something to get the results in a very, you know, diligent way with all the details with a lot of cleanliness, you know, it's was very difficult uh thing to do.
And usually you know that the the experiment will take approximately two weeks before you start from your start till the end when you get the results. It would take approximately two weeks of very hard labor.
Every day, no holidays, nothing, you know, 12 hours, 14 hours in a laboratory doing very hard work. And when you start, you will never know what will be the result.
Even cockun sheshawe, cock on the falafalta, even a uh duishop to barohonta Chotokanta Gore Lebrudde Shuma Krasti Chalizat and if you do little mistakes somewhere in between there will be no result, no successful result.
So I was doing this experiment with no result again and again and again many, many times, many months, and I couldn't get anything. I couldn't get anything.
I was not I was making some mistakes, this and that, and I had to start from the very beginning again, this hard hard, work for two weeks and again failure, nothing.
So, but then I started chanting Hare Krishna Mantra. And I thought, you know, if this Hare Krishna Mantra really works the result should be different this time to the same
the phala-phalata on no samat, as you can see, my motivations was not hundred percent pure. It was not any kind of bhakti-phala anya-bhilāṣitā-śūnyam, kona prakāra bhakti chilona.
But I really believed in Hare Krishna Mantra. So for two weeks I was working and at the same time I was chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra.
And at the very end you have to do some little you have to put some you know I I mean I will not explain but anyway you know I put something in uh uh you have to put some film, some photo film, uh there was some radioactivity, and the result would come from this photo film, you know, and uh it had to be there for a few hours, six hours, I think, you know some radioactive material with this film have to be there for six hours.
Phalate hoto ebong sekhane hatche bigata-doṣa-yukta phala, ebong eta phalaśe hoto, rejalṭa tarmādam with positive. And when I put this and I had to wait for six hours before I get the result.
For six hours non-stop I was chanting Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna.
I was so eager because I thought no this time if it's again failure I I will not this is too much, you know, it should be something for six hours I was chanting again and again and again.
I mean, anyway, when six hours was over, I took this film, I put it in uh, you know, I developed it in the chemicals, and when I developed it, you know, I was so eager, I saw it, the result was there.
Chemicals dilām, te hoto eṭī ḍiklār, and I'm phala-phalata. Nobody could believe it. My scientific chief the professor came and he said oh no really oh fantastic this is the best result I've ever seen.
He has taken this film and he was going from room to room. He's saying it's look, look this is the best result look looking at the room
yes And I was sitting there and I was thinking for myself, you don't know who gave this result. This is Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra. Anyway, I became very convinced. I became very staunch devotee after that.
Secret association with early Moscow devotees
Māther ḍāne ghure āmi. So what happened after that I I'll tell you a couple more stories, little stories, but uh I think it would be interesting.
I started meeting with the devotees secretly and gradually gradually you know I would put more heart into the devotees association with devotees.
I started reading Prabhupada's books and I was getting more and more involved although uh still internally in my heart I didn't associate myself with the devotees. I was still like uh outside absorber.
Tumi ja kichu gopan rakhte ceyechile, tader shonge chilo, takhon to karo kache nije ke dure rakchilam.
Please understand that for me what I was doing at that time, I d you know I didn't even know about Krishna, who is Krishna. I just knew this Hare Krishna mantra and I didn't really make connection that Krishna is God or Krishna is person.
I was just chanting without knowing who is Krishna and what is behind this.
I I was not really aware of this I was curious, I had some faith and uh I was doing experiment. Let's do some experiment and see if it works or not.
And when I met the first devotees there in Moscow, to be honest with you, I was not very impressed.
Some of the I was quite impressed by my friend who gave me Hare Krishna mantra, but most of the devotees didn't really impress me so much at that time. It was a very strange crowd of people.
From different backgrounds, you know, young old, you know, very kind of really strange people. They were you know I could see that they're very sincere, that's what I could see, definitely.
See when we look at other people we usually judge them according to our understanding and usually the pride is getting involved in our judgments.
Most of these people were not really educated and I was a little proud that I am an educated young man, I am scientist, I know much. So these people they they could match with me in this sense.
Overcoming intellectual pride toward fellow devotees
At that time I I didn't know that actually the most important quality of a human being is the sincerity of the heart, not material knowledge, not education, not wealth, not beauty, not his janma. This is not important.
The sincerity of the heart is what is the most important.
And And because of this ahankar, because of this pride, I couldn't really practice properly and I couldn't really associate on a deeper level with the devotees. I couldn't.
Shonge korar shongkora, tader kach theke bisway shongkora, tabu amar she oporosh to amar chilona. And Krishna decided to give me a good lesson.
Krishna ashi amar jonne kup shundor, is within our heart and he knows our problems and he is very expert in seeing these problems and curing these problems.
Krishna is the adhi avasthan karan, tini amader shomoshya dekhen, ebong shei shomoshya shomadhan den, tini srishti karan.
Krishna when somebody is proud, Krishna is within his heart, and he he says, okay, let's do something so that you will get rid of the sprite. What happened with me? I was doing still my scientific work.
I was associating with devotees I was chanting a little bit uh and I was still not decided whether I should go this path or not uh so I the life was going on I was chanting but I was not really you know identifying with a devotee.
I didn't have this abhiman, I am a devotee too. Gaby Shana Karmuch Ali da Silam Bhaktorashang Silam a to job kurtsilam
So one day I came to my work where I was doing my research work to this institution and I saw my scientific guide. He was a very tall and very strong man.
And he was pale, he was pale, he was he was basically white. His his face was white. Samarjini had sev uh scientific guidesilan uh tinihatse uh etar shmukuman prasharita chilatini anek diktiku And he was very nervous.
And when I met him he told me in a very uh and a very dry you know he told me somebody is waiting for you in my office. But Tini had said uh Amijar Badabol said Amarobise uh I
couldn't understand what's going on, who is waiting for me in his office, what's going on, you know I was very strange. So I entered into his office and I saw two big, big, big guys, two big men.
Tamita Rubisa Braveshramato declams a cooper, she can up or say. And they were smiling very nicely in me. And uh one took his documents and he showed it to me and it was said the KGB.
And you know, at that time KGB would mean so much for every Soviet you know people for every Soviet Soviet citizen the KGB would basically mean this is sarvanash the end of everything kg lot but gwendashano stamps
kg ev KGB decided that many Tashabunashwegel. I immediately couldn't understand why my scientific guide was so pale. And they started speaking with me in a very nice voice.
Actually, they repeated the same phrase which Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī told Śrīla Prabhupāda during their first meeting.
Bhutti Shiddhanta Sharta Chakra Prabhupada Shanghai, Shila Bhakti Bidan Bhaktivedanta Sha Prahu Padas, Je Pratam Shakhatikulhsila, Shekata, Purabhti Kotchulan.
When Shila Prabhupada came to meet Bhakti Siddhanta Sarasvati on Ulta Danga temple on the roof of Ulta Danga temple and Srila Prabhupada bowed down in front of him.
Uh Mandira, uh Srila Vhutish Danda Sashtakure Shanghai, Shila Prabhupada Kakurta Gyatsilan uh so the first phrase before Sriva Prabhupada even uh raised his head, Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati told him, you are intelligent young man.
You should preach this Krishna consciousness all over the world or something like this. This KGB people, I didn't bow down in front of them, but I I was about to do this. I was almost in the same condition.
And the first phrase which they told me, you are intelligent young man. But they didn't tell me preach this Krishna consciousness movement.
They told me because you are so intelligent you you probably will be able to understand what will happen with you if you will continue the same thing.
To make the long story short, what they did, they they started threatening me. They said to me that if you continue with this way, uh I they said to me, uh
we know that you are associating with these devotees, and these devotees are very dangerous. And they told me we know you are different.
And you should actually continue going to them but you should also come to us and tell us everything which is going on there you have to report
us on a regular basis. And if you do this, you will have all your desires fulfilled. You will get all your PhD degree and this degree and that degree and we will help you.
But if you don't do this, if you don't work for us, then you know everything will be finished in your life and we will put you in prison.
And very smilingly they were explaining this to me if you do this, you will get everything,
if you do this, you will be in prison and as you know how it is in prison, you know. Some people sometimes die in prison, you know. And then they told me, you don't have to give answer now.
It's a very important decision in your life and because you know whatever you decide now, it may change the course of your life, so please think a few days before you give us your decision.
But they told me we know you are very intelligent and we know that you will give the right answer. Buddhiman, Evan Jubag Vhakti, Evan Tumi, Meshrayatse, Shaduttar Madakadeve, it amrasha raccing.
And when they left, the whole turmoil started in my mind. It was it was really shhh. Tavan Matha Chakkur to the Shrugala Gutshevan.
You know, I was thinking I I I uh side of my say no I cannot do this, I cannot do this, I c I cannot work for them, this is KGB, I cannot do this, but other side say no you have to do it because otherwise you will be in prison, what you will do in prison.
It's not so nice. There's no vegetarian food in prison. Rabalov Chit Nai, Ara Dikinda, Navalathas, a Zilazate, Zilata, Nira Mishka Bajana. There was the whole war inside me.
And uh you know over the time it became more and more intense. You know, I I had to go there in in three days, in three or four days.
And you know, every day it would become m more and more before I you know I have to do it. I cannot do this and I cannot do this. What shall I do? It was such a difficult choice which I have I had to make.
Such a difficult decision. It was unbelievable, you know.
Receiving spiritual advice from a young devotee
I I I'm giving you little taste, but it was really very difficult for me to make the decision to do this. So before going to them, I somehow or other Krishna gave me from from within my heart some inspiration.
Krishna, why don't you take shelter? Why don't you meet with devotees first before going to them? And yeah, I said, let me get an advice from the devotees. Maybe they will help me in this situation or whatever.
But as I said, it was very difficult. Devotees were very, you know, they were hiding, they were, you know, they were not speaking openly on the phone and, you know, they were really trying to hide the practice of Krishna
consciousness because it was dangerous, it was very dangerous. And Krishna consciousness is a very difficult thing to practice. They were chanting and doing kirtan, but it was dangerous.
Ultimately I managed to call one young young girl whom I happen to know from my meetings with devotees. She was much younger than me in age. She was maybe eighteen or nineteen years old at that time.
She was not very educated. She didn't have any degrees, she didn't graduate from the university. You know, from the material point of view, she was inferior than me.
But in this very dangerous situation, somehow or other Krishna gave me inspiration to take shelter of her, to get some protection, to at least to get some advice.
Because I couldn't find anyone else, you know, Krishna specifically is teaching everyone. So I couldn't find anyone else. So ultimately I had to meet with this girl. She listened to me very carefully.
She understood my position. And then Krishna gave her some intelligence. somehow rather I arranged the meeting. We met with this girl outside because inside it was dangerous.
So outside somewhere on the street we met with her. And she asked, "What?" And I said, something is terrible happened to me. She said, "What happened?" What happened to you?
I said KGB came to me and they gave me this choice, you know, and I've they will put me
in prison, they will say they have to work for them otherwise they will torture me and they I and I will die in prison you know I you know I was I was saying all this mental disturbance which was there in my head at that time. And she was listening very calmly when I was saying, you know, so bad, so horrible,
you know, I have to tell them, I have to make my choice, what shall I do? And then uh then you know and then I say you know if they put me in prison I will die there.
And then she smiled and said, Soul is deathless, so you will not die. She said, Nothing will happen to you. What can they do to your soul? Nothing.
And she said it with such conviction and she was so calm and she said, You know, why are you afraid? You know, what's wrong with you? You are spirit-soul.
And I with this Upadeśa, with this instruction, I got a very strong realization.
Refusing KGB cooperation and choosing spiritual integrity
That's right, I am soul. They will not do anything to me. That's true, they cannot do anything to me.
So directly after meeting with her with this little girl I went to this KGB to the special place where the appointment was there. I went to this KGB place. And I felt myself very convinced.
I offered into this office, you know, and this office was very, you know, very dangerous place, you know, it was dark. I own I entered this office.
And these two men were sitting there whom I met the other day in in the office of my chief of my scientific guide. And they were smiling in the same way.
And they asked me, so you intelligent young man, what did you decide? And I said, I am spirit soul, I am not going to work for you. And then I said this is against my principles.
And then the one, you know, the the most dangerous one, he started yelling at me. Which principles do you have except for four regulative principles?
Anyway, so he said you will regret bitterly that you did this decision now. But then you know I was uh when it happened I actually did two very important lessons. I derived two very important lessons from this incident.
One incident, uh one lesson which I derived, which I got from this incident is that you shouldn't judge other people according to their externals. This young girl was in all regards she was a girl.
