Rama Rama Rama Hari Hari Ajanalamati Pujokana Kavadhata Sunkitana Pitarukanax Vishwambarodvi Javara Yuba Damdeja Batphika Dantah praviši mahava chamamprace dharaswad, sharmam paminna, ranandamu bhagavat, I'm

very happy that I have this opportunity to address you tonight and Radha Pramut Prabhu told me that I should speak about stress and because I have a lot of stress I can share with you my realizations about this.

But what I wanted to do as Radha Pramad Prabhu said, I read the Bhagavad-gītā for the first time in 1980 when I was doing my PhD physics in molecular biology.

And what struck me about the Bhagavad-gītā is that it's a very logical and rational book. It doesn't demand blind belief, doesn't demand to you know take anything.

It's just Krishna very logically and very beautifully explains everything in good succession very rationally. Of course I must admit that I didn't understand much after first reading,

but what I understood is that there is a very um rational system behind it which is completely different from my worldview. Because at that time I was an atheist.

And not only an atheist, I was quite devout atheist, militant atheist. You know, my parents were atheist, my grandparents were atheist, my grandgrandmother sometimes would go to church and being a little kid I would preach to her, you know, it's nonsense, it's why you're so ignorant.

But when I read the Bhagavad-gītā, it my scientific mind didn't revolt against it. It was well received by my scientific mind,

even though I didn't understand much, but still I understood one thing that here is a system which is different from my worldview, but at the same time not less rational.

And for approximately, I don't remember exactly, but for approximately maybe one year, maybe more, there was an internal battle, Kurukshetra battled within my heart.

There was an army of Duryodhana, atheists, and they were saying, no, no, no, this is ridiculous, look, you know, science did this and that, and you know, the people are traveling in the space and they're doing changing genes and so many things. And then there was some, you know, very timid voice from the other side and I was reading and trying to compare these two systems. And ultimately what happened to my great surprise, I was actually myself, I was watching this battle going on in my heart.

I was curious how it will how it will end because it was not clear. It was a quite severe battle, internal battle. But ultimately what happened, ultimately I said I actually I

don't have good arguments against this what Bhagavad-gītā is there and what Krishna is saying. I don't really have good arguments. All my arguments are not. There are some arguments, but they're not so good, not so strong.

So, and I had to surrender. At that moment of time I had to really admit that I am defeated. It's the same way as Prabhupada said.

He said that when he first met with his Guru Maharaj, they also had some heated argument and he was walking after that in the street of Kolkata and he was thinking I was completely defeated, but I'm so blissful being defeated by him.

So I felt something like this. I felt a lot of relief when I understood that there is a lot of logical reasons why the system which is propounded by Krishna in Bhagavad-gītā is actually valid.

So, what I want to say is that I didn't take it so easily, I didn't take it blindly,

and even though Radha Pramud likes to tell the story about KGB, how KGB was my guru, I mean it was, but not the main guru that's for sure.

They did push me in this direction in one sense, but it alone would not be enough for me. There was some rational process which was taking place in my consciousness and conscious.

And ultimately I had to admit that there's something to it.

Scientific flaws in unguided evolution

And there is actually more reasons to believe this than not to believe. And of course mostly the most convincing argument was that how is that the evolution is right, you know.

I I couldn't figure it out because even though I was programmed uh as uh a follower of Darwin, but I couldn't figure it out how how this complex, completely, you know, marvelous, beautiful body was created just by chance.

Somebody, some of evolutionary speculators said that, you know, it all started when ameba, the primordial ameba, one cell organism, crawled out from the primordial ocean

and then you know, it turned left. If it would turn right, it would be completely different. I I just couldn't couldn't take it seriously. Of course, it's it's a sort of joke, you know.

He doesn't know whether I'm over left. But the point is that it's it cannot be by chance.

You know, it's it's so ridiculous to say that this completely complicated body in our in our brain uh there is around hundred billion neurons and this each neuron uh has a capacity to enter into the uh you know connection with at least 2,000 other neurons.

The total number of the possible combinations of different neurons in our brain is more than the number of the atomic particles in our universe. So in your head you have something which is bigger than the whole universe.

And this is all just of course by chance. By natural selection. I mean, give me a break. It's not scientific. The proposal is not scientific to start with.

There is absolutely no proof that how it is, you know, some people try to reproduce the conditions of this primordial ocean or whatever, but uh nothing complex comes out of it. Nothing worthwhile comes out of it.

Maybe fewer amino acids come out, but what does it prove? It doesn't prove anything. You know, from amino acids to the simple living cell.

And you know, I was studying actually DNA protein relationship in my PhD study, and uh the ultimate stupidity which I heard was that when I was reading one really good scientific magazine journal?

And there was an article in the scientific journal, and the author was speculating what came first in this evolutionary process, DNA or proteins.

But the problem is that DNA without proteins has no meaning, it cannot reproduce itself. Proteins cannot be produced without DNA because they're coded in DNA.

And on the top of it, you need also RNA to make the whole system more complete because DNA itself cannot produce it.

So ultimately, the conclusion of this article was that somehow or other, you know, DNA and RNA and proteins they just appeared together. All this complex system just like from the from the garbage pile from you know some I mean it's it's ridiculous.

Uh anyway, so I I don't want to bother you more about this, but uh it was definitely very strong in my mind that it's just not plausible. It's not plausible.

The length of the axons, which are you know, this uh little legs or whatever of neurons in our brain is more uh more than three times more than the distance between Earth and moon. Around 30 million kilometers.

How our brain works, you know, this whole network, thirty million kilometers within our little brain. And that's of course it's all just natural selection. How is that without any any intelligence.

You know just try to make experiment. Don't try to make the human body or human cell or even little protein.

Just trying to do some stupid computer out of garbage pile, you know. Put some, you know, details of computer and wait when the computer will come out of it. You will not have to pay for it.

But probably it will worth nothing. Nothing good will come from this you know accidental things.

Overview of stress and scriptural wisdom

Anyway, so what I want to say is that what always impressed me, you please tell me if it's interesting for you, if it's not interesting, just let me know.

But what always impressed me is that in Bhagavad-gītā Krishna says something which is up to the point with the the most advanced scientific discoveries of the age.

He gives some concepts which are amazingly fitting and explaining and even in a more deep way explaining what the discoveries of the science is.

So that's that's what struck me and you know I it's not that I made my you know it's made my profession but I I I I was I'm curious about it and uh that's what I'm uh I will try to tell you today tonight, if you don't mind.

I will take just one verse of Bhagavad Gita and I will explain to you the scientific concept, the modern scientific concept behind this, and ultimately it will explain the mechanism of stress.

As I said, the topic of my talk will be stress. So I will take what Krishna says. Krishna doesn't use the word stress. I don't know. Probably there is no stress in Sanskrit. Or maybe there is. Actually there is, I think.

Depression is there, we saw that. So but probably something is there in Sanskrit.

But nevertheless, he explains in Bhagavad- gītā in a very beautiful way, in a very profound way, how the stress appears, what is the main cause of stress and how to cope with stress.

In just one verse, everything is there in some coded way.

Of course, we don't have so much time, so I will be very brief. I don't want I really don't want and I cannot speak too long because my body is not as strong as it used to be.

So I will be very brief, I will leave some time for questions and answers. So I will very briefly say about some scientific concepts behind this verse and how it works and how it is relevant in our life.

And why we all have stress. And why this amount of stress is becoming enormous.

You know, the modern civilization is supposed to free us from stress. But the amount of stress is becoming more and more and more, and it will be even more, and how detrimental it is for our health, for our mental condition, and so many other things.

And hopefully, I will give you some tips how to cope with stress according to what Krishna says in Bhagavad-gītā. Are you okay with this little plan? You're okay. Tell me if you're not. I don't mind. I can stop speaking.

Material nature and false ego

It's not a problem. So the verses from the third chapter, apparently you are reading the third chapter of Bhagavad-gītā, and this is fairly famous verse which Prabhupāda quoted many times.

Prakṛteḥ kriyamāṇāni guṇaiḥ karmāṇi sarvaśaḥ, ahaṅkāra vimūḍhātmā kartāham iti manyate.

Let's repeat it because this is the traditional way to learn Bhagavad-gītā. We should first learn it by heart and then by meditating on the verses which you learn by heart, their deeper meaning will be revealed to us.

Actually this is revealed knowledge. It's not just logical knowledge. It's something which we have to realize within our heart. And for that memorizing ślokas is very important.

Prakṛteḥ kriyamāṇāni, prakṛteḥ kriyamāṇāni, guṇaiḥ karmāṇi sarvaśaḥ, guṇaiḥ karmāṇi sarvaśaḥ, ahaṅkāra vimūḍhātmā, ahaṅkāra vimūḍhātmā, kartāham iti manyate, kartāham iti manyate.

So from the Sanskrit point of view it's a very simple verse. Anyone you know who knows very elementary Sanskrit can understand what Krishna is saying.

He says, prakṛteḥ kriyamāṇāni, guṇaiḥ, karmāṇi, sarvaśaḥ. All the karmas, all the activities in this world, karmāṇi, sarvaśaḥ, all are done by guṇas, guṇaiḥ. It's in the in the in this uh fix or whatever.

No, no, it's sādhanā-bhakti. Gunai Karmani. So Gunas are doing this, prakritiya kriyamanani, and uh kriyamanani is of course in the present continuous.

So at this moment Krishna says everything which is being done is being done by the mechanism of prakriti, by the mechanism of nature.

So whatever you are doing, whatever you think you're doing, it's actually not done by you. It's done by the mechanism which was given to you. And I will explain how it is, how it is true.

Krishna says it's all done by nature uh by uh the mechanism, by the material nature, prakrite kriyamana nigguna karmani saraj. Ahankari mudatma but uh kartaha miti manyte but when the self

becomes bewildered by his false ego, ahankaravi mudhatma, he becomes completely you know completely fooled by the false ego, not just mudhatma, vi mudhatma, in a very special strong way because the V means Ves, especially

when he is especially bewildered and Amer amazingly enough, every one of us falls into this category, including myself, because I already confessed to you that I had a lot of stress if I didn't.

Then I would claim that I would not be bewildered by false Sigho. Ahankara vibudmatma kartaha miti manyat. But the soul which is bewildered by the false Sigha says, I am doing this.

Very simple concept and familiar concept perhaps. We all know this from yoga. In yoga, there is also very important sutra, in yoga sutra of Patanjali, the very important sutra is also there, which says the same thing,

defining asmita or all seagull. The asmita is being defined as Drik Darsana Shaktayo Ekatma Eva Asmita.

The false ego is that when you somehow or other mix the seer, the one who sees with the power of seeing. Darsana Shakti.

Every one of us has Darsana Shakti but um um and the false ego is that when you uh think it's akma when you identify yourself with with this darsana shakti and it's all of us.

We think we we see this world and we think I am seeing.

And seeing basically means any other activity because seeing is the most common activity which we do. We always see, we always get so much information by seeing. So therefore, this example is there.

Sir and the Shakti of the Sin.

It's basically the same as when you play with the computer and at one point you become you identify yourself with the computer because there are so much interesting things is coming. You know you identify with this you you you like it, you play with it.

So, in the same way, we're playing with this computer of our body, which is very complex, given to us by the material nature, but ultimately, this is the source of stress.

Krishna doesn't say it implicitly, but that's the only source of stress. Ahaṅkāra is the root cause of all stress.

As soon as you get rid of ahaṅkāra, you know, even if you don't understand or follow what I say after that, just remember this thing. As soon as you get rid of this false ego, you will be stress-free.

You will have a relaxed, stress-free life, you will be very happy, and nobody will believe the transformation which took place with you.

Neurological processing of environmental information

So basically, again, I just I don't want, I I won' It can go into more details but I I can explain very briefly interesting things which uh neuro physiologists uh scientists which study the brain the, working of the brain discovered recently.

First of all, and they said that we have this, we always bombarded by so much information from outside, right? You know, there's so much when we see in our waking stage,

so much when we hear, and especially now in this informational age we always bombard it with so much information.

And all our senses, by our skin, we scan, you know, and we get some information about the touch by our nose. We get some information about the and most of this information.

Most of this information we get completely unconsciously. We don't know that this information is coming to us. But the mechanism of the brain is such, please listen very carefully because it's important.

The mechanism of the brain is such is that it scans the environment all the time. All the time, the scanning of environment, all this information is uh is uh being processed in our mind.

Therefore, it's interesting, the mind takes uh the the brain takes approximately 25% of the energy of the whole body, even though the weight of the brain is only 2%, hardly 2% of our body. Some people have less.

Who have big bodies. But it doesn't matter. Still, 25%, this machine always demands. It's a very expensive machine.

Actually, evolutionary scientists they they baffled, they said how this very expensive machine can give any advantage because it's so you know you you you basically most of the food which you eat you eat to to supply food for your brain. And uh you know unless other other organs of our body they can eat some food, you know, some fat which we acumulated. Brain needs fresh food all the time.

If brain doesn't get glucose or some food from for a few minutes it will become dead.

It always requires, all the time requires, even when you sleep, amazingly enough, the same processes, very active processes are going on.

When you sleep there is certain phases of your sleep and there is very you know your eyes very it's called rapid eye movement sleep. Your eyes very rapidly, you know, even though you're completely sleeping.

So something is going on all the time in this marvelous, wonderful machine which is given to us by Darwin. Oh, sorry. By God, not by Darwin. So uh so what's happening, it's scanning the environment

And while scanning the environment, it always scans it for some dangers which is there. For some, because initially, you know, we had to protect ourselves,

you know, the evolutionary scientists say, you know, the tiger was chasing.

But uh it doesn't it doesn't matter who was who was chasing us, tiger or our wife, you know, it has always been there. It it really doesn't matter.

The dangers were always there in our in our surrounding, in our environment. So, and then there is a system in our brain, we had to react very quickly.

There are so many situations in our life when we have to react completely automatically. And when there is a dangerous situation in the environment.

And actually you know to start with it's it's very important to understand that our life started with the most dramatic stress we ever experienced.

Just imagine a little baby who is there in the womb, who is supplied by everything, he's very, you know, nice and you know he he hears this nice beating of the heart and all of a sudden he feels that there is a strong pushing and initially the pushing is there but he doesn't know where to go.

Because nothing opened yet. The channel is not open. Then ultimately after few hours of struggle, you know, he's he's in panic. He already has very developed brain and he's in complete panic.

You know, something imposing he doesn't know what to do.

You know, and then you know he sees little light outside. He goes there, you know, he struggles to come out from this little hole which is much less than he, you know, for sometimes many hours the labor takes, you know, how many hours? Twelve hours or whatever. Such a painful experience. It's painful for mother. Just imagine how painful it is for this little baby.

And then all of a sudden he's there. He's outside. You know, there is a very bright light which he has never seen, the

whole environment starts bombarding him with and he doesn't know, he doesn't make sense out of this, he doesn't know what is dangerous, what is not. He only knows that the beating of mother's heart is something which is pacifying him.

But you know the doctors you know slaps him and I don't know what they do here in India, but uh in the West sometimes they take the little baby away from mother. And sometimes for many hours.

And how shocking it is for the baby, you know, the only thing which he has is this pacifying beating of the heart of the mother.

And all of a sudden he's there alone, he he hears something, and you know there are some nurses which are you know which yell and there's somebody's beating him. No wonder he's completely shocked.

And you all went through it. And you all remember it. Subconsciously it's also proven by the science that this trauma of your birth is still recorded there.

Early development of neural stress responses

So, and that's good. Amazingly enough, what I want to say is that stress is not bad because it activates our brain.

What starts you know from this stress, what starts, the process is started in this machine which is given to us by prakṛti by the material nature or by God ultimately.

So the in the brain, the programs start forming which are called neural network in our brain. How to react on this stressful and dangerous situation.

And the little baby and every human being actually is very well equipped. His brain is very well adjusted and it starts very quickly to produce the proper reactions on these dangerous situations.

He interprets the situation, the mind, actually, the not

the little baby, because at this point there is no ahaṅkāra yet. He's not yet bewildered completely by ahaṅkāra. He's bewildered by what is happening with him, but he's not bewildered with ahaṅkāra.

So, what I want to say is that when we have dangerous situations, stressful situations, and this is only one example.

Throughout our life, we had many dangerous situations, right? Many. You know, we're driving in a car and some accident is about to appear or whatever.

You know, of course there's not much tigers around, but wives are still there. And husbands of course there too.

So not only wives are dangerous, husbands sometimes are much more dangerous because they're more aggressive naturally, but you know it's it's so and neighbors are there and professors uh yeah, I'm not there.

In our student life and you know the exams are there. Exams are very stressful. You agree with it? Exams are completely stressful, it's very dangerous.

So, what happens every time we undergo a stressful situation in our life? A new program formed how to deal with this situation.

So that when the next time are there, we shouldn't think too much. It really saves a lot of energy. The brain knows what to do, you know.

And actually, scientists say that uh by 51 years when when the you know boy or girl becomes 15 year old, he got all the dangerous and stressful experience which which we will he will have later in in the life.

You know, these childhood years are very stressful because children are very vulnerable, they are not protected. You know something which which adults are well protected from children are completely susceptible.

You know there's some you know cockroach is is crawling to him and he thinks it's a dinosaur or he will devour me. So, you know, there are so many dangerous situations.

You don't need tigers to create alarm uh reaction in the mind of a little baby because little children are so vulnerable.

So by the scientists say that by 15 year old you're completely you went through you you basically have all the programs how to react on dangerous situation of this world you are educated your brain is educated whether you understand it or not you already know how to cope with it because the brain has to see when the dangerous situation is there, what happens?

You know, we have to, first of all, the energy has to be there, extra energy, right?

We have to deal with this situation so the you know the uh extra glucose is being pumped into our blood vessels and the blood pressure becomes more, right? And uh the heart starts pumping.

You know, you're there in some stressful situation, the heart starts pumping, right? And you you become and uh you know if it's very dangerous situation, the other systems stop completely.

Why people under complete stress develop ulcers and you know all the digestion problems? Only because of this, because their digestion doesn't work. The body has to save energy.

Digestion is not economical, it you can only do it when you're relaxed, when you're under stress, that the body will somehow or other manage the energy in a different way.

Put it in different channels and completely so there are different systems which are at work, the hormones are being uh produced by our adrenals, you know, to activate us. You all of a sudden have a lot of energy.

And then stressful situation went out and you're completely fatigued and you don't know what to do because you used the energy which is which was there for maybe one week within a few hours of exam.

You use so much energy. So on so forth. What I mean to say is that the body is a machine. And you don't know how to learn.

It's not that you know there is some dangerous situation there. Say to your heart, you know, starts pumping. No, you don't say this. It's going on automatically by this automatic nervous system.

The nervous system knows how to do this. And that's exactly what Krishna says. Prakṛteḥ kriyamāṇāni guṇaiḥ karmāṇi sarvaśaḥ,

That's exactly what Krishna says. Everything which is being done is being done by your body and by your brain, by the mechanism which is given to you. By material nature, ultimately, by God, it's an amazing mechanism.

And then what happened?

It's also very interesting and very important to understand is that by the year 15 you get all the programs, you get all your reactions ready, and the rest of the life of your life you only react in a very familiar way.

So sometime by 40 years old some people have usually have psychological crises. Why? Because they think nothing is happening in my life.

The same situations in your life you attract yourself, the same stressful situation you attract, and you already have reactions, the programs, how to react on these situations and it repeats again and again and again.

Actually, Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura, in one of his songs, he says that he's describing this situation of people who you know in the beginning we're all very hopeful. Oh this life is so nice and so much oh my goodness so much enjoyment and so exciting and so nice you know by 40 you're completely disillusioned and you think you know same boring thing same thing again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again you know usually people have very severe crisis because they don't know.

Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura himself says, my life is uh like as if it is stunned in one point.

Nothing new happening, no new experiences, no excitement in life, the same old stuff, unless you joined Hare Krishna movement. And then of course there's a lot of new impressions coming to you. But if you don't, usually it's it's it's the same old thing and you know the same jokes in the TV, the same programs in the TV, the same stupid stuff, and politicians promise the same thing which they never do. Everything you have seen so many times.

And so what I want to say is that Krishna is very correct when he says, prakriti akriya manani gunaikarmani sarasava. It's only prakriti which is at work. And in most of these reactions, you don't know how to react.

It's all the programs which are there. As I said, your mind is scanning environment all the time, even when you sleep. When you sleep, the mind is processing the information which is there

stored during the day and you know it is still doing this, trying to structure it in a proper way so that it's more accessible. But it's basically the same thing.

You see dreams, whatever you did during the day, then you see it in the dreams in a very distorted way.

Mind gap between perception and ego

because again the same processes are taking place and uh uh and the most amazing thing listen this is uh perhaps the most important point which I am to tell you today tonight is that scientists they discover this, they know how the brain works, how all the programs are there, how they're programmed, how this self-educating mechanism is working.

You know, it's it's a very beautiful computer with this how you call this self-learning program so how how it's yeah, whatever it is, uh it's just it's already there. We we can learn uh automatically.

Uh but uh and they can see in the brain, they can scan the brain and they can see here is he's seeing something.

They put you in this Amart T machine to take the you know Mr T or whatever, tomograph, and uh and then they show you some images.

And they know uh certain areas of the brain are being activated and they can see, they are activated. Because seeing, you know, it's not the whole brain starts working, it's only certain part of the brain starts working.

And then, this is the most amazing.

One quarter of a second approximately, 250 milliseconds later, the other area of the brain becomes activated and this other area of the brain says, I see it. So you first see, then there is a little gap which you don't notice, and then only you understand that you're seeing it.

And this is again, this is solid science. It's proven by the science that you are you are not seeing. You only realize that you are seeing when the process of seeing has already taken place.

In other words, there is a difference between darśana shakti, the ability to see, and the seer.

The seer uh is a little retarded is and some and some people it takes longer so they their processor is not so quick so they they realize and we sometimes you know uh especially when we uh you know when we little distracted by our mind and something happened and then you know it takes some time for us to realize that we are seeing this, we are experiencing this.

So, what's happening in reality?

There is prakriti which is working, there is soul which is there in the brain, in the heart, and it reads out the signals of the brain and interprets them in a certain way and understands what they mean.

On a conscious level, but in the meantime, on subconscious level, everything has already been done. On a subconscious level, your mind already figured it out. What you're supposed to do.

It's only later you you think that oh yeah now I understand.

You know it starts making sense to you, but it has already been made sense to your brain everything which is necessary already understood by your brain by all these programs.

So please understand this because this is the cause of stress. This is the cause of stress.

If I didn't identify with this process, if I knew, if I would trust my body, and ultimately God, everything which is happening is fine. God is behind it. You know, He knows what He is doing.

He's probably knowing better than myself. And if I would not get involved into this process. But you know, foolishly, why Krishna says Vimudatma? Because completely foolishly, I think, oh no, I have to do it.

It's already done, my dear sir. It's already done by your brain. Just trust your brain.

Psychological experiments on illusion of control

It's already automatic when there is a car accident. You don't think what's going on? Everything is doing but you think you know I have to think about it. I really have to think about it.

It's um the scientists did an amazing experiment. They put a pigeon in a cage. And then they put some food in the cage.

But the food was behind a little door, so the pigeon was pecking his uh you know beak uh everywhere and then uh ultimately by accident he would peck uh to this uh little uh knob and uh the little door would open and the food was there.

So very quickly the little pigeon learned how to get food. And he was very excited. He knows the trick. He knows how to live. He is he knows the secret of happiness now.

You know, he knows every time I peck my beak into the snow, you know, I will get food. And for some time it goes on, and then cruel scientists, uh which represent the cruel fate in our own case, uh uh

they stop this arrangement. They don't put food and this stupid fellow is pecking

and pecking and pecking and the door is open, but nothing is there and he's completely frustrated. He's stressed out, he's just he doesn't know what to do, how to do, what how to live.

And then all of a sudden, the experiment goes on, and then all of a sudden,

you know, they again put food, but this time without depending on this pecking the beak in the knob, but they just start opening the door automatically every one minute, let's say. It just opens and the food is there.

The stupid fellow, you know, he's in complete anxiety, he's in stress, he doesn't know what to do, there's no food all of a sudden. Before there was a lot of food, all of a sudden there's no food.

The previous trick doesn't work. So he starts, you know, he starts doing his, you know, with his wings. How you how you call this? Flapping with his wings?

And when he flaps his wings, you know the door opens and he says, I have to flap the wings.

And uh every time he flaps his wings and the door doesn't open, but then all of a sudden it opens and he says, Oh it works, you know.

I I have to probably I have to flap more. And he ends up by flapping and flapping and flapping and flapping.

Stupid fellow doesn't know that the food is coming on its own accord. Whether he flaps or not, the food will come. He will be provided by food. Did you recognize somebody in this description? It's you.

The food and everything which we get, it's coming by the higher arrangement, by the arrangement of our karma. But we think we have to work hard. We have to really flap. Unless we flip, nothing will happen.

You know, I I I was the same, you know, I thought, how I will survive if I don't work, you know. I don't work since 1986, I believe. Yeah, since 1986 I don't work.

And you know, I not only I survived, there's a lot of money coming to me. And how? I I don't know how. It's just coming. It's just coming. I don't do anything for this. I really don't do anything for this.

And I know, but I at one point when we were doing this big temple project, I really was stressed out. I thought I really have to work hard.

But I I realized whether I work hard or not work hard, the same amount of money is coming. Not less enough. So, but this is uh please understand this is what is going on with us. We think that we are the doer.

And that's exactly what Krishna says. ahaṅkāra-vimūḍhātmā kartāham iti manyate. I am the doing. I'm the doer. I'm doing. I'm doing.

And in the meantime, Krishna is sitting behind this and he's wondering, you know, I maybe I also have something to do with it. I created this whole beautiful machine.

I I gave the sun, I gave the moon, I gave the you know air, water and everything. I provided all the living energies.

You know, in the Bible Jesus Christ says that the beautiful lilies they don't work hard and the birds, they don't work hard and they get everything which they need and they're so beautiful and they're so carefree.

They're just flying, you know, because they're not like this in a cage, little pigeon. And it's it's it's going on like this. You know, I sometimes I tell little story. I I probably have to finish so when Well, huh?

Fountain parable illustrating ultimate divine control

I'll I'll tell a little bit more if you are interested in this. When I was a kid in Russia there is a very beautiful place near St. Petersburg. If you ever been to St. Petersburg, you probably went there.

It's a very huge tourist attraction. During the Tsar's time, they made a very amazing fountain park. There are hundreds of fountains, and one fountain is I don't know how many meters high.

It's more than hundred meters high, you know, the huge you know water flows up and of course Russia is not like India, there's plenty of water there, they don't know what to do with the water.

You of course you have to come in the summer because in the winter there's no water, it's all ice and snow. But it's a beautiful place.

Very such beautiful fountains and all sculptures and they all different mythological figures are there. You can spend the whole day there. Huge park and amusement park, seeing all these fountains.

And among many different fountains, there are special fountains for children.

These fountains are like, you know, they're playing, you know, sometimes you go onto the mushroom and uh you know all of a sudden the rain starts coming and then you run out and then you run again.

And one of them is very peculiar. It's called stones. Stones basically means that there is a lot of natural stones, and

children they are you know running around and all of a sudden there's water coming and they all you know they are complete ecstasy and they you know they start uh yelling and you know and laughing and they run away and then water uh comes down and there's no water and again they try.

And the idea behind is that when I touch the specific stone, then it works. And every I remember myself when I was there, it was my favorite attraction.

I was running there and I thought you know this is this yeah here's this I know I

discovered it I discovered it and yes I I ran and I push and sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't work but you know, stupid as we are, we thought it works every time we found the secret.

So then I went when I was with some guests came and I went with them when I was adult.

And I again was seeing this beautiful scene, children are you know laughing and running around, and you know, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't work, and they're in complete ecstasy.

And then I started looking around and I saw one old man. He's sitting there completely indifferent. You know, he's reading his newspaper, he's sitting in a bench,

a little in a little distance, and under his feet there is a little, you know, little, how you call it, little something, and he turns his leg, and at that moment the water starts coming.

And then he turns his leg back and the water subsides. And then, you know, and he, you know, he's doing it completely randomly without thinking. And every child thinks, I know the secret. And he's just sitting there.

And at this moment, when I saw this little old man who is bored by this job, you know, who probably gets very little money, who is just pushing this button or whatever, you know, I saw this is God. He's doing everything.

Of course not he's not bored and he's doing it not randomly. He's doing it in accordance to his conscious plan. But we as little children we know we figured it out. We know this is the secret of happiness.

We know how to get what we need. Right? You agree with me? So the uh this is this is the little uh illustration for this verse. Do you find it fitting to this verse? Isn't it?

Detaching from results to avoid stress

It's exactly exactly what Krishna says. I am doing this. I am doing this. So what Krishna says, give up your false ego. Every yoga says the same thing. You're not the doer. You still do.

You know, the body will do, the brain will do, but trust, trust God.

You know, you just you just accept what God sends to you with complete gratitude, with complete purity of the heart, you just say, you know, I'm accepting whatever you have to send.

And we know this is the teaching of all the great saints. You know, there is this story about one weaver who was saying everything is by the will of Rāma.

And he was put in prison and everything and then, you know, completely without any reason. But he says Rāma is behind it. Rāma is doing this.

Yeah, and then he was procured to the judge next morning because he was supposedly caught up red-handed, although he had nothing to do with it, he was just doing this bhajans and, then some thieves put whatever they robbed, some goods, and you know, police came and arrested him and put him in prison.

And the judge said, What happened?

And he said, Oh, by the mercy of Rāma, I was doing these bhajans, and these people, nice people were running, and somehow or other they put something in my hands by the mercy of Rāma. And of course, by the mercy of Rāma, a little later the police came, and by the mercy of Rāma I was put in prison, and by the mercy of Rāma, I was chanting his holy name the whole night, and I was very happy.

And now by the mercy of Rāma, I'm here in front of you telling you what happened. And the judge said, by the mercy of Rāma, go home. He says, this is, you know, this is happening by the mercy of God.

There is an arrangement. Prakṛteḥ kriyamāṇāni guṇaiḥ karmāṇi sarvaśaḥ. Everything is happening, not without reason. It doesn't mean that you have to become lazy, but it means that you should not become stressed.

The only thing which it means, there is no need to be stressed. Whatever happens, will happen. It will, it will destine to happen. You may flap your wings, you know, very hard. You will not get more.

If you don't flap, you know what is wrong? Wrong is the concept. Wrong is the concept. I'm the doer. I'm doing. And when you have this concept, you're completely in anxiety, what will happen?

You know, if I don't do this, you cannot sleep.

You know, you you you lose sleep, you you have insomnia, you have this and that, you know, what will happen if this will happen, and if this doesn't happen, you know, my exam, if I don't pass exam, oh you know, something will happen, whatever

will happen, you will have to accept. And the fact you're worrying about it only makes things worse. This is the first lesson which Krishna gives to Arjuna. Very powerful lesson. He says, What is this verse?

Tasmād aparihārye 'rthe na tvaṁ śocitum arhasi. Karmaṇy evādhikāras te, mā phaleṣu kadācana, yeah, it's a very famous verse.

Karmaṇy evādhikāras te mā phaleṣu kadācana, you only have a adhikāra to to do the work, your body is given to you, your brain is given to you, you are well equipped, do the work, no problem, but don't depend on the fruits of your action because you're not entitled to them.

Karmaṇy evādhikāras te mā phaleṣu kadācana, never, you're never entitled to the fruits of your work. The fruits of your work don't depend on this. You're entitled to do your duty.

You're entitled to do what you're supposed to do. If you are a teacher, professor, you have to teach and the best of your ability, but don't put false signal into it. Don't become proud. I did it.

If some good result comes, I did it. Because the old man is watching you. He is in your heart. You became proud. Old man says, let me push the button in a different way. And let's see what you will be able to do.

And you try to do the same thing again and again and again. Doesn't work. Like this stupid stupid pigeon. He tries, it doesn't work. And then it works.

And he says, Oh, I am such an intelligent, I have such an intelligent, big false ego. You know. Just accept and this is the most difficult. Why it is most difficult?

Because we already very deeply identified ourselves with all the problems which are there. This Driggdarsana Shakti Ekatmana, you know this, this this process has already taken place. I think that I'm the doer.

And if I don't do, if I don't worry, you know, and yeah, Krishna says, Tasmāt, therefore, apatyaṁ hy atra na tvaṁ śocitum arhasi. Don't worry. In the matter of inevitable, if something has to happen, it will happen.

Don't worry about this. Your worrying and you are what you are doing.

Causes of modern mental tension

I now I will tell you the most the most, the worst thing uh which I already told you some nasty things, please forgive me, but now I will tell you really nasty things.

So, because of this conception, ahaṅkāra, the false ego conception.

We always under the stress, because of our identification with all these programs in our prakriti in the body and the brain, we're always under tremendous stress and the stress becoming more and more and more because listen very carefully.

Why it's becoming more and more and more?

Because we always scan our environment and we compare our environment with the ideal situation which we think we should deserve. And we always see the difference between the real situation and ideal situation. And our mind, because of this controlling tendency, what this ahaṅkāra, the false ahaṅkāra, you become controller. I have to control my life.

You know. And wife thinks I have to control my husband. Husband thinks I have to control my wife. And boss thinks I have to control my children. You know, all these controlling tendencies. Everything, what is stress?

Stress is the gap, is the understanding that something in my environment doesn't work the way I want it to work. And you resist it. Did you notice it? You know, something is wrong.

You know, you may have everything nice, but some little thing, and you don't like it. And you don't like it. And you always think about this little thing. You never think about 90% of nice things which you have.

You know, I have nice family, this and that, you know, and food is coming every day. But but this is wrong. And you start working very hard how to overcome this.

And you may not overcome this because it's against your karma. According to your karma, it came to you and you fight, fighting and fighting and resisting and resisting.

Instead of saying, you know, Krishna, you know, I'm yours. You're protecting me. It's like with Draupadī, Draupadī was in complete stress. And who would not be?

You know this Duḥśāsana is pulling her sari and you know Duryodhana is beating his thigh And she's completely, you know, dishonored and her husband are sitting there and she's looking for protection, you know.

Arjuna, maybe he will help, Bhīma. So they put their, you know, faces down.

And then she comes to Bhīṣma, and Bhīṣma says, Can you protect me? And she says, Oh, I don't really know how it works, you know, whether it's correct or not, you know. Dharma is so subtle.

And then she comes to Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Dhṛtarāṣṭra says, I'm blind, I don't know what's going on. And then she's in complete stress. She's trying to protect herself, you know, and she understands I cannot do this.

And ultimately she says, okay, Hare Krishna. And all of a sudden, you know, here we are. Sārī becomes without end. This story is there to teach us how we should do this. We cannot control our life.

Please raise your hand if you agree with me. We cannot control 100% of our life. We cannot take him. No, he's a brahmacārī. Even he cannot control his life. What to speak about gṛhasthas? They definitely cannot control.

We're not independent. We cannot control our lives. So what to do? Resist, right? Fight. You know, I will I will show I'm right. This this is how it should be. Yeah, do it. Try it. You will get all kinds of diseases.

Because what happens for some time your immune system copes with the stress, but because of too much tension, which is constantly, you know, you have to for it has a lot of uh you know

a lot of um how you say this storage or whatever, some extra power. But then ultimately uh at one point it's exhausted because of constant stress. Because of constant stress it undergoes and your body collapses.

Nowadays, people start getting very serious diseases in the age of 35, Diabetes, you know, the liver doesn't work. According to their individual constitution, the weak points,

everyone has weak points, everyone has genes which are defected or whatever. So, because of this constant stress, you will get the disease. You will get heart disease, you will get liver failure,

you will get diabetes beforehand. Not when you are supposed to do it. You know, maybe it's ridiculous when the person who is forty years

old becomes completely sick and he goes to doctors and he becomes chronic disease and it's very common nowadays. Very common. Why? Because of the stress. Why stress is there?

Because people become more and more foolish, less and less trustful to God. They don't trust God. Nobody trusts God. The whole system is programming us. You know, if you don't do this, nobody will do it. Nobody will help you.

You have to do it. Only you have to do it. And we always, and because uh we have artificial understanding or conceptions of how our life should be. We always see all these advertisements. Oh I need this new car.

If I cannot be happy unless I have this new car. So I have to work hard. And you know, you work hard, you get a new car, and then in the meantime, the new car comes out, or something else comes out.

Instead of saying yes, I'm accepting whatever I have, this car is nice. It may be not as fancy as my neighbors have, but what do I care? Why should I care what my neighbors think or you know, I'm satisfied.

Kṛṣṇa says in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, it is said that the greatest virtue which is there is is the ability to be satisfied with whatever comes on its own accord. And to be grateful at the same time.

What happens in the meantime? We're always ungrateful, we always say, Kṛṣṇa, you didn't give me this. Give me this. And we blackmail him. I will not put my 50 rupees in a hundred if you don't give me this.

Or I will not chant, you know, I was chanting for, you know, for two weeks and you didn't fulfill my desires. Why should I chant? You know, God is not there. He doesn't fulfill my desires.

He's there, but he's not in a hurry. He's waiting to see how, you know, how sincere you are and what is your understanding and what you what you really what your value system really is.

Spiritual examples of complete surrender

He is there and if you you you if you let it go, you know, Krishna, I'm yours, you know, like, you know, I'm uh I was driving here and I was cursing Radha Pramod Prabhu.

He made this arrangement, it's so late and this and that. And then I have to go somewhere else and I sleep is not very good and I didn't sleep properly last night.

But then I said, okay, Kṛṣṇa, okay, whatever you want from me, you're a puppet. Śrīla Prabhupāda said this beautifully in, uh, in his bhajan when he came to America. I'm your puppet. I don't know what to do. I have no idea.

You know, can you imagine 70-year-old man, when people completely retire, he goes to a completely new country, he he doesn't even know whether people will understand his heavy Indian accent.

And some people didn't understand in America when he was speaking in the beginning. He has Prabhupāda has heavy accent, you know.

So many of his disciples told me that in the beginning they couldn't understand what Prabhupāda was talking about, even though they were Americans. He has 40 rupees in his pocket. Can you go to America with 40 rupees now?

Okay, 200 rupees, okay, no problem. Okay, 2000 rupees, no problem. And moreover, he didn't spend this 40 rupees because it could not be exchanged at that time. At 66, these rupees were useless.

He has 40 rupees in his pocket, he has books, and he has faith in God. You do whatever you like with me, I'm your puppet, I will dance how you like me to dance.

And Prabhupāda, there is a beautiful story which I really like.

One of his secretaries tell the story, it was later when was very happy period, you know, there was some court case in America, some problems here in India with Juhu temple, you know, this fight, litigations, this, that, you know, the programmers, so many attacks, you know, anti-cult people,

so many problems and ultimately Prabhupada was there and this

stressed stressful situation was building up and building up and building up and ultimately Prabhupāda gets a telegram because at that time luckily there's there was no e-mail or whatsapp. It's such a source of stress.

Constant source of stress. You're bombarded by all these messages day and night. Sometimes unpleasant messages. At that time, luckily it was only telegram. So Prabhupada opens telegram and there's something really bad.

He opens the telegram. Really bad, something is happening because you know there was really dangerous situation in Juhu, you know, when this Mr. Nair was trying to take over and cheat devotees and and the

secretary says what Prabhupāda did. He opened and he's very curious what Prabhupāda's reaction would be. He says he opens this telegram. Here is this telegram. He's very grave. His face is very grave.

And he very gracefully goes to a separate room. He closes the door and the secretary, he's so curious, he looks in the keyhole: what's going on? And it's Śrīla Prabhupāda. He lays on the floor and starts laughing.

Lays on the floor and laugh and laugh and laugh and laugh and laugh and laugh and laugh. And he says this laughter was like, you know, the flowers coming from the heaven. Because that was his level of realization.

What he was, you know, he had his level of dependence on God. He understood whatever is there is ultimately is everything for good. This life is a teaching experience.

It teaches us to become more serious, more sober, understand the power of God and everything else. So don't be stressed about the life.

Reducing stress through attentive chanting

Be easy and accept. And you know, Radha Pramot told me that I should. Yeah, the practical practical application of this, don't be proud. If success comes, don't be proud. If failure comes, don't be morose.

Don't say I did it, I achieved this. No, it's not you. You don't know what to do. It's just the mechanism of prakṛti which helped you.

Yes, you learn something by the way of experiences, but who sent to you these experiences? It's God who sent to you the experiences. Don't become proud, don't become morose, just say this.

Brahmananda said to me that you know how you chant, how is to get rid of the stress with the chanting. And it's actually simple. You know what the word om, which is the primordial mantra, means in Sanskrit.

What does it mean? It means yes. When the people chant om, they only say yes, I accept everything which you send to me. I accept the totality. Not the 99% which I like and this one I will fight tooth and nail.

No, I accept hundred percent, hundred and eight percent of whatever you send to me, good things and bad things. For me, there's nothing good, there's nothing bad. I'm learning, I'm your servant. I'm accepting this, yes.

Oh, yes, oh, yes. And in the meantime the mind says no and he says yes. Oh no. And the same with Hare Kṛṣṇa, you know, because I uh that's another topic. I will not touch it.

How the Hare Kṛṣṇa, if you chant it properly, will relieve you from stress. But the idea is you you have to understand the mechanism of stress and the source of stress and how to fight with the stress

through the media of this Bhagavad-gītā. Bhagavad-gītā is giving you everything you need to know in life. Including this. You can be very happy. You know, and you can have everything you need.

And Krishna will send the more you worry, the less you get. People think the more I worry, the more I get. Wrong. The less you worry, the more sober you are, the more concentrated you are, the more yeah, it's it's easier.

We all know when we're all nervous, you know, we cannot do anything. We just Just shaking. Why? Whatever happens, will happen. I mean, I'm preaching to myself. It's not that I'm not shaking, I'm shaking all the time.

It's just, you know, that's the human psychology because the problems are there but at the same time when the situation is not so acute you have to learn how to become more detached and actually that's the the cause.

When you are touched my way, I want my way, you will be stressful. If you say it differently than I said, I said that the cause of stress is ahaṅkāra.

We can equally be right if we say the cause of all stress is our attachments. Because where are our attachments coming from? From our false ego. Conception of how it should be. I am like this.

People should think about me like this. And if they think about me not good, it's it's it's it's it's worse than death. Isn't it? You know, why do we care what they think about you?

Only because ahaṅkāra thinks you know everyone has to love me.

Because I'm so good, I'm so nice, and I'm so non-violent and I'm so such a good professor, and all the students have to love me. And instead they're putting some nasty comments in the social network.

And you become stressed. Why? Because you're attached. Only because of this. An attachment is the false ego. All your attachments are in the false ego. It has to be like this. I have to be like this.

People have to relate to me like this. Nobody doesn't have to do anything for you, you know, your prime relationship with God. If you establish it, you will be protected.

If you don't establish it, you will be completely insecure all the time and you will try to protect yourself and become more and more stressful and get diabetes and heart attack and cancer and whatnot.

Don't do it to yourself. Why? What is the cause? What is the reason? Live peaceful life. Depend on God.

Chant His name, do your duty and uh develop your brain in a specific way so that it it can recognize God because it's very important to see God. So that's Hare Kṛṣṇa. Thank you.

Questions on developing observer consciousness

Maybe there is a question. Have any questions? You said that there is a six two fifty millisecond gap, right? Just don't activate this area of the brain which says I'm doing this. Just, you know, just you observe.

See, there are two different attitudes. One attitude, I am doing this. Another attitude, I'm absorbing what's happening with me. So this absorber's attitude is there in the fifth chapter of Bhagavad-gītā.

Krishna says that the self-realized person, he just watches how his body reacts and what he's doing. So the practice for this is just to observe what's happening, absorb your thoughts. Don't take your thoughts seriously.

You know, you get some thought and you think, oh, this is my thought. It must be very serious. Must be very true. I have to do something. No, don't take all your thoughts. Just just look, observe neutrally.

Or some reaction comes, or this is good. You know, don't say it's good, say it's it is like this. And when bad things happen, don't say it's bad, just say it is like this. And I accept this.

So it's a it's a matter of practice and you have to practice it for at least 40 days continuously. You know, at least for few minutes like half an hour a day.

You just absorb your thoughts, absorb your body, absorb the bodily functions, absorb your breath, and then you will see the changes in your mind. You will become much less stressed.

The stress will go away if you take the position of absorber because you know whatever is happening is just darsana shakti. I am seer, I am the drick, I am different from this. I am watching it. And I'm objectively watching it.

Without see why we create karma? We create karma only because we not only experience what we experience, but we attach some emotions to what we experience.

If we would just experience what we experience, there would not be karma. It would not leave some saṁskāra in our brain and it would not push us in the future.

So you know this this position of being an observer is is important and you can practice it every day. You know it takes only 20 minutes. Just practice it a little bit and see the result. See the result.

Just sit down, scan your body.

You know, put yourself, close your eyes, scan your body, feel whatever is happening in your body, observe your breath and start chanting, but not I am chanting, the holy name is coming to me.

You know, that's I didn't tell you, but the art of chanting is not I'm chanting because I cannot chant the holy name. The holy name is descending upon me. If we do it, you know, and you you slow down your brain.

Your brain has different modes of action, better ways. It's wakeful brain, stressful brain, then it's better.

You know, put it in alpha regime which is a little slow by the breath control and mind control and then chant, you know, I'm not chanting, the holy name is coming to me and then chanting this.

And then I'm observer, I'm observing this, this is what's happening. You know, I don't have to do it, I I don't have to hurry. You know, because under the stress we always hurry.

You know, I have to do it, and this is not done, and this is not done.

So 15 minutes, don't hurry anywhere, nothing will happen. You will not die. You know, just let it go and then you will see the changes in your attitude. Just understand that it's false.

You know, if you if you think it's real ego, you cannot get rid of ego because ego is a part of our consciousness.

Rāmānujācārya very clearly about this he says bhoktṛtva jñātṛtva and kartṛtva is always with the soul I am doing kartṛtva uh agency uh bhoktṛtva I'm experiencing it and jñātṛtva I know I'm knowing uh but you know there is nothing wrong with ego.

What is wrong is uh with false ego. I'm independent, I'm not dependent on God, I can do it myself, I figure it out, I will do this. Yeah, and and see what is the experience.

How happy you are when you don't have false ego and how miserable you are. Just serve. You know the real ego is the ego of the servant because we are dependent. Dependent always serves.

The false ego is the ego of enjoyer. I am enjoying. I am the lord of all I survey. Everything should be the way I like it to be. And it will never be.

No matter how big professor you will become and how big you you may become the Nobel Prize winner. It will only make things worse. So karma carries forward or the same term? Huh? Karma. Well, will it carry forward?

Karma will no karma will carry because the you know you have prārabdha karma which is already there in your body. It will continue, but you will observe karma. You will not be emotionally involved into this karma.

And therefore, you will not create new karma. You will exhaust this karma, and uh karma will be finished in itself, you will exhaust this karma by the end of the life. Karma will continue.

It's very difficult to get rid of karma in a real sense, but the main problem of karma is our reaction to what is happening with us. That will change.

The events of our life will be the same, good and bad things will come, it's destined to come.

We you know call we caused other people to suffer, we will have to undergo some suffering, we did some good things, we will have to undergo some good things. That will continue, but your reaction will be different. You will be not so emotionally involved. And it doesn't mean you too you will become like a stone.

You will still be very active and very you, know, protective and very nice to people. Much more nicer because you're not so self-centered in this condition.

Because when the karma comes we only think about our karma, bad karma, especially if bad things come. We cannot think about anything else.

But if we become little detached from this karma then we still continue to love our near and dear ones, do something good for people, even though I'm I'm in a very difficult situation. It's amazing.

Just little last story which I tell, there was this Viktor Frankl, the Austrian psychologist, famous psychologist. He was a Jew by nationality.

He was put in a camp, in a concentration camp, when Austria was taken taken over by Hitler and

uh and it was extremely difficult and he would every day he would see how his fellow people would be put in uh you know in ovens and killed mercilessly.

And he said that at one point I he was sitting alone in his cell, very cold, and he was completely naked because he did

something wrong and he said at this point of time I realized that I don't have to be unhappy even in this condition. I can be happy. Nothing precludes me from being happy. And he became happy.

And amazingly enough, he survived the whole thing and he even helped of course his fellow prisoners but he helped also his guards. The guards would come to him for counseling and asking his advice.

He is in this miserable condition, unbearable miseries.

He lived till 90 years old, completely happy without any disease, was freed from the labor camp, led a very nice life, lectured all over the place, you know, developed his understanding based upon his experience.

And this is a living proof. You can be happy. You don't have to be unhappy. And in this moment, you will help others, other people. You will help more. You cannot help when you're completely self-centered.

You are you're only doing it again for your s for your sake, not for their sake. Okay.
